Space Mountain

I ride Space Mountain all the time at Disneyland both before and after the Refurb. and I can tell you that the ride did get smoother, but lost some of its speed and snap.
I remember on my last Three trips to WDW, and how much faster and Wilder the Magic Kingdom Version was in comparison.
I have to say that the WDW version did have a better thrill factor in my opinion. Although the Sound and Visual effects upgrades at Disneylands Upgaded version are cool too!

75 Days and counting!!!

I love Space Mountain! It's the only ride that still makes me scream!!! It just feels so out of control and I'm always convinced we're going to fly off the rails! Whenever we go on it, I keep repeating to myself "this isn't safe, this isn't safe, this isn't safe" then when we're done, I go back round and get back on again to do it all over again!

I agree that the look of the ride needs updating. I remember going on it about ten years ago for the first time with my mum and sister and I was sat right at the front and I could see these little lights that showed where the track was as we climbed up the hill, then suddenly the lights just stopped and there was nothing...That was so scary!!! Now though, you can see the track all the way round!

I've thought about this alot and I don't like the idea of changing the ride in respect to completely gutting it. The charm and thrill of this ride is like watching a Star Wars space battle. Imagine that movie with silent explosions and no bumpiness for those ships. Space Mountain is a classic and if they want to add a ride that is smoother and faster elsewhere so be it. I'm all for adding another ride instead of just changing an old one. Sure add the paint, clean it up and do something with the line to entertain those who wait but leave the ride alone.

I know im late but I dont have time to visit this site anymore. I am on the college program and I work at Space. I have heard all the rumors but I have been told from people that the track is not going to be replaced which I cannot confirm. Here is a list of things I have heard by maintence going to be done.. cannot confirm anything because we are not told anything official.

-Gates will be added to the load area to prevent people from trying to get on the rockets while it is still in motion.
-The track will be painted black to blend in more
-Possible reworking of the Standby/Fastpass line to keep them seperated.
-Reworking of the speaker system

I was closing in the control tower one night about a month ago when a group of imagineers asked if they could ride with the lights on for the upcoming rehab. I hear June or July Space will be going down but have not heard for how long. Anything new interesting comes up I will try to keep eveyone updated. Again.. they dont tell us much, especially CP's.

Isn't the track already black? I didn't notice it standing out when I was there a few weeks ago. All the maintenance fixes you mentioned would less than a month to do. Roller Coasters wear down very quickly. Even if they don't replace the track, the refurbishments you mentioned are all cosmetic and have nothing to do with how the ride operates.

Thanks. If you hear anything else come and tell us. I love hearing news right from Disney World.

I'm hearing more and more that January is the new target date.
Not sure....still looking into it.
Also, your list of things to be done is incomplete.

They were the only things I heard around the mountain. I'll add more to the list when I hear more.. Its not really major talk which is suprising.

The track isnt black surprisingly, its hard to describe, the track is a dark silvery color but the support beams are a faded black. Some of the track is actually discolored and moldy green which comes from the trains. You can notice the green in the video.. right after the main lift look at the track on the left. But once again the updates are only what I heard.

I hope it gets put back to Jan
I want to ride it while it is bumpy..to make it smooth would be a shame.
Would a ride in Space really be smooth?????
Keep it bumpy :)

Yeah, space is a vacuum so there is no air drag or turbulence. The only sensation of bumpiness could be induced by the propulsion system on your spacecraft or collisions with objects floating around, which could have disastrous effects!
