Space Mountain?

An update would be nice as long as it still has the same feel to it.

The problem is that the "feel" to this ride is part of the issue that warrants a refurb. It doesn't "feel" at all like one would expect a futuristic space vehicle to be whisking through the stars. It feels like a rickety, Coney Island-like, roller coaster.

It may appear that there is plenty of room, but you have to take into account the height of the building and the fact that if it drops too much, you're at the bottom of the mountain a lot sooner, thus resulting in a much shorter ride. I agree they could do it, but really only a few decent drops, and none of them would be able to be very high. There is one good drop in the DL version (as mentioned above), but it's really the only one the building could accomodate in order for the ride experience to last as long as it does. Make sense?

What doesn't make sense, is why you are pressing this point with me. If the drop is big enough, the rise back up could be just as big, therefore, still plenty of space(height) for a long enough ride.

So, i want some drops...big deal...get over it please.:p

Hmmmm... I'm betting not many people (if any at all) are exactly dying of curiosity to know what your opinion is, and probably won't go to the trouble to search for your other posts on the topic. My advice is that if you really want your opinion known, then invest the time and trouble to type it out again in this thread, rather than direct people to other threads in which you've expressed your opinion. After all, if you were going to take the time to write that you were sick of stating your opinion on this topic, why not just post it one more time? For that matter, you could have just gone to one of the other threads and done a cut and paste of your opinion from one of those into this thread. Just a suggestion.
The reason I don't post it is because I am sick of talking about a Space Mountain rehab topic because people just put up annoying ideas that could ruin the entire feeling of it or just something that wouldn't be done any time soon, or are just restating already put up rumors. I really would rather spend time talking about something else for once thats other than the mickey wand and SM rehab. Thank you for your advice but I'm sticking with what I have at the moment.

hmm

A lim launched coaster would be too fast and too much hastle for space mountain.

I like space mountain just the way it is. Maybe just clean up the effects and repalce the ride or refurb it with the same layout just smoother.

I love Space Mountain. I enjoy every rough bump, hop and clank about it.

I could'nt agree more, when I first rode SM that's the way it was... bumpy, hoppy, and clanky. If they refurbed it then it wouldnt have that same feel to it. I usually like when they refurb rides because it gives me something to really look forward to doing when I return on my next trip but sometimes I just like to leave well enough alone.

Eurodisney Space Mountain

I agree with the other poster. I have been on the Eurodisney version of Space Mountain and Disneyworld version. The Eurodisney version is great, the ride is very smooth and the look is really modern. When I was at Disneyworld Space Mountain in January, I couldn't believe how much the ride looked exactly like it did when I was a kid in the 80's. The track was so rough and bumpy. Definitely time to make some changes.

I want to ask a question but I'm afraid I'm going to get attacked. Oh well... here goes...

As I said earlier I wouldn't mind a refurb either. But don't you think we're being too hard on the ride? I mean, to many many people who only get to go once every couple of years, if that, Space Mountain may still be a blast don't you think? No pun intended. A refurb would be nice, but don't you think it's still a great ride, especially for someone who doesn't ride it as much as the rest of us?

It's an old coaster. It has to be refurbished so that it doesn't fall apart. This will inevitably interfere with someone's vacation, but if nothing is refurbished, WDW will dilapidate.

if you want a faster more intense WDW SM you could always ride it at night.

I am torn between wanting a new one and keeping it the same, i have ridden it so many times its not funny. I can still remember the first time my mom dragged me on as a kid and i screamed bloody murder. (it wasn't that bad but i was little)

Anyone who thinks SM at Magic Kingdom is rough hasn't been on the 'old' Great American Scream Machine at Great Adventure. Oddly enough, a lengthy train refurb and a track repainting has taken the edge off of the coaster in recent years.

The click-clack of SM is barely felt by my well-broken-in coaster butt. However, the light leakage from the queue and lift do harm the ride experience.

My solution is to seal up the lift and partially seal up the queue ceiling. Put a glass 'skylight' on the remaining part of the queue with some nice dark one-way tints so the queue can see the cars dimly zipping around the course, but light from the queue doesn't taint the riders' experience. The 'skylight' would also help the spaceport theme.

Geez! Lighten up. So you wanted to discuss drops and I disagreed with you and explained why. Chill, dude! Life is full of people who have opinions that will differ from your's. Deal with it.

The Great American Scream Machine isn't intended to represent a flight through space. There is no need for it to be a smooth ride. A ride through space should, at the very least, should be a sleek and smooth ride. I realize there are other factual details that keep Space Mountain from truly feeling like a ride through space (i.e. you're breathing oxygen, you're not weightless, etc) but you'd think they would at least try to make it not feel like just another clunky roller coaster. On the DL version, it's a smooth ride. There's no reason the WDW can't be the same way.

MK's Space Mountain is neither a "wonderful ride" nor is it a "timeless classic" like the Matterhorn. Space Mountain WAS a great and impressive ride when it first opened....in 1975! But now it's just old and outdated. It's a joke. It's supposed to be futuristic, and in 1975 it was. Most people who still love Space Mountain do so because it's nostalgic, not because it's cutting edge or impressive in any way. Now that the technology exists (and has for quite some time) to make it a sleek, smooth ride with great effects, it's ridiculous for Disney to keep it as is.
lighten up! don't ride it then, leave it for me & my family.

Let's just face it. Right now WDW has the suckiest Space Mountain out of the five. DL and Paris have just been upgraded 2 years ago. Tokyo has just opened their new version last month after 7 months of renovations. Even HK Disneyland has a way better version.

Useless debate.
Refurb will happen, within the next 18 months most likely.

My stance remains the same....Gut that pile and give us a ride worthy of the "Space Mountain" name.

That's gonna be my last word on the subject until I get more refurb info. I'm off now on the way to WDW, and yes, I'll ride that abomination just so I can curse it's clanky bones.....

Who said I wanted to "discuss" drops? I posted what i thought the ride needed. I did not infer in any way that i wanted a dissertation on logistically if it was possible or not. Your disagreement is hardly my concern.

How is that one? How does it differ?

I'm pretty certain that's the same layout as the Disneyland one, including the audio. And WDW's Space Mountain needs that refurb DESPERATELY... we got off and were like, "Wow... that sucked" when we went a few months ago. It was early in the morning and we could've gone on again, but we decided not to because it was such an embarassment.

The post-show hallways could seriously use an update, too.
