Has anyone heard anything about Space Mountain. Is there any chance that there might be a return to the original concept?
Tomorrowland
Originally called Space Port, Space Mountain was originally designed for Disneyland but was built at Walt Disney World first. Early concept paintings showed the tracks on the outside of the building. The picture below appeared in early guide books.
Prior to getting a Buck Rogers-inspired rehab, Tomorrowland was scheduled to be remade similar to Disneyland Paris's Discoveryland and was even going to be renamed the same as the French park. This idea fell by the wayside due to budget cuts. Other Disney sites online have the story about this concept.

It would be cool if the ride came out from the inside and circled around the outside for a little bit anyway.

If I remember correctly, the Space Mountain in Paris does have the track on the outside for a little bit... For some reason my visit to that park is very hazy...:(

Kinda.
It's still "inside", but it does travel outside the "mountain" structure as it travels from load to the launch cannon, during the launch, and at the very end as it comes into the station.

When it travels between the different sections, is it not outside? I very well could be wrong... as I said, unfortunately, I barely remember my time there. But I thought I remember sitting in the cars and being able to see outside...

You can see out through openings in the tube, but it's not technically "outside".

Lee, no doubt space mountains needs alot of tlc and help. Are there any plans to keep the moog music and the holographic hexagon windows (even though they could be used in a different location)?

Hopefully there will also be a brand new post show :sohappy:

I have seen space mountain with the lights on and it looks like they have some room to expand. I know its not much but is there enough space to expand the ride and add side by side seating. If they keep the current car arrangement and add side by side. This would greatly increase the hourly capacity.

I would bet that any plans for having it outside were quickly scrapped by Orlando's weather... Would they run SM if it was raining and a portion of the track went outside? I don't know what they do with Big Thunder... anyway, it would sort of spoil the illusion if you were getting wet all of a sudden, wouldn't it?

God bless the "Ignore" button.
All I need to be happy is new pre- and post-show theming and a sweet orchestral-meets-techno score during the ride.

Oh, and I'd probably also need the financial ability to go to WDW...

As well as branding.....space mountain has a bit of an identity crisis...

Tomorrowland was never finished in 1994. Space Mountain still has alot of different "blasts from the past" in terms of architecture.

I would assume they will keep the actual mountain the same (exterior wise)...but what about the entrance? It is so cluttered now and has a bunch of different things happening in front of it.

Hopefully they will knock out the skyway station, the arcade, and the old entrance and build a brand new one that unifies the whole area.

Also to note is that the 1994 orange spikey font given to space mountain doesn't really represent the area. Interestingly enough Disneyland went back to their bold red font they used for their space mountain way back in 1977 and just enhanced the font with a new retro feel.

The only remaining space mountain sign from 1975 is the one you see when enter space mtn from the TTA....hopefully they can do what they did at disneyland....work with the past...enhance our bold blue font and then modernize it.

Hopefully we will have space station 75 as well. :sohappy:

If Space Mountain does indeed get its long overdue rehab (and I think it will,) look for it to be more like Disneyland's style with rehabbed cars with audio speakers in it and probably some sort of new ride track.

I hope they don't change it too much. A few new additions would be great, sure, but nothing that takes away from the original ride.
