Space mountain changing

You guys think Space Mountain is a rough ride???? Apparently, you've never been on a creeky old wooden roller coaster in the midwest on a cold day. I would hate to hear what you would have to say about that... :brick: :D

I have to aree that space moutin is a class rollercoaster. If the ride gets changed I whould like to see the same track layout and more affects in the ride like muisc and more drops and a liitle bit faster. I liked space moutin when I was yonger becuse it was a fun ride for me to ride but as I got older and taller I never rode space mouitn again becuse my pants din'nt like the ride. I am over 6 foot tall so I whould have proubles geting in the cars and geting out of the cars and there isn'nt much leg room on in the cars but I still like the ride as it is. I think that the track is holding toghter relly good for a 29 year old rollercoaster but sometime someting is going to brark or the track will brack and the track will have to be relpaced sometime I hope that is soon.

My sis and I rode it last month.... it's not scary to us anymore. We still loved it though. The entire time we were trying to tell each other where the next drop or turn was....the people behind us thought we were crazy.

"LEFT!"

"DROP!"

"OMG RIGHT!"

Yea we do that to... trying to scream where we are going to trun next is hard because it's so hard to speak while your moving around so fast! We did the same me thing during e-ride night... me, sis,my dad and three of my cousins! we went on three times in a row and by then you know when the bigs drops gonna come! LOL we also had a little in side jokes we were screaming on the ride....it was so fun but they need to make it even more fun for us!!

BTW it is true they are going to redo Space mt.. I dunno when but a cast member did tell my friend she confermed that with me today.... exciting!!

I think the herky jerky motions make Space Mountain what it is. When you're on the ride you don't notice that much of the theming (certainly u notice the launch area and the tunnel), but the asteroids overhead really don't really enhance the ride that much. Additional special effects would be appreciated, but I find it hard to believe that the support structure of the track will be able to support significant change to a ride that only travels 27 mph at top speed. Any major renovation discussed by the people in this thread would undoubtedly result in the entire mountain being gutted.

I still have my doubts. If we were to trust every CM we heard stuff from, we would have monorails everywhere among other things. We haven't heard any rumblings like this from reliable sources.

I agree with you there. The bumpiest ride I've ever been on is Son of Beast at Paramounts Kings Island. I will never ride that one again because it's just too intense (everyone I was with walked off with head and back aches). Space Mountain is really not all that rough, it could be so much worse. Space is smoother than the smoothest of rides at PKI and the Six Flags park I work for. Despite the fact that the ride is a little old and slightly bumpy I still love it. It is a classic ride and is also still very popular as it is. I don't think it needs to be completely redone. Maybe a good rehab for normal maintenance, but otherwise it's perfectly fine. Why fix what isn't broke?

I consider Space Mountain to be extremely smooth. Probably one of the smoothest rollercoasters out there. (all coasters get rougher with age. Only solution to the problem is to replace the track but new trains help), Anyway, the roughest coaster I have been on was the Steel Phantom. But that was before I learnt to keep my head back. The roughest I consider for a rollercoaster recently would probably be Viper at Six Flags Great America but the only parks I have been to recently are SFGAm, Universal Orlando (both), and WDW (all 4).

I second that. When it first opened SoB was great. However, in the last couple seasons it has gone quickly downhill to the point where it is like a big, wooden mugging.

Actually, topics about WDW's Space Mountain are beginning to feel like a ride on a rough woodie to me. I feel like I'm banging my head around, trying to explain that a ride with the iconic status of Space Mountain should be a state of the art, cutting-edge, highly themed, top-notch thrill machine. Right now it's just a big room with two slow, jerky, bumpy, barely-themed, low-tech, aging coasters of the quality you would find at a traveling fair.

But hey, that's just me.....I happen to remember when the name "Space Mountain" meant something. :D

Hey, keep working at it Lee, you're turning my opinion around! :)

I like SM the way it is, but it really needs a rehab. Face Lift the qeue ( but keep the same wonderful music and atmosphere! ), add a better safty system, improved special effects, new track ( but same layout ), add LIMs for the lift ( but not a huge launch like the paris version ), new trains with on-board, more animatronics, improve the pre-show, and on ride photos. Also, the story needs to be made more clear. Did you arrive at a space station? How do you get back to earth? It needs to be made very clear that you are launching from earth for a high speed tour of the galaxy and returning home.

I think some people don't relize is that space is suppost to be the way it is.

Now I do agree that the story is lacking and that the que area needs some work. I would love for the single riders line to be able to extened out the building...for our stand-by line, to not have steeps. So wheelchairs and even ECV's can stay in the normal line. Maybe even a pre-show for the ride. But the ride herself is right where its needs to be.

Really if you where strapped onto a rocket, would you expect a smooth ride??

The an't Star Trek people!

At first I was screaming "NO NO, don't change Space Mountain", but after reading all the posts and thinking about it, I think that SM could use a bit of work. After all, wasn't it Walt's dream that Tomorrowland be cutting edge and futuristic? With that said, here's my idea:

Gut the ride mechanism, bring in Bollinger & Mabillard to create a coaster that would be befitting to the theme of SM. B & M coasters are (in)famous for their roaring. The roaring would sound like rockets zooming around inside the mountain, which I think would be really cool. Keep the trains 1 rider wide, but only have 1 track. This will make more room inside the mountain and will make for a longer ride.

I also really like the idea of using a LIM launch system. Not super fast, but something to give you enough G's to put you back in your seat a bit. Maybe, after loading, have the train move into an inclined position and stop. Give a countdown and then have it launch up the hill and into the rest of the ride course.

Don't get me wrong, I love SM as is, and think it's a total classic. My imagination just got going and I let it run wild for a little bit.

I hope they change the loading area and exit. But you never know. :veryconfu
20K Leagues Under the Sea was a classic too!

I agree, the queing area needs help, but i love the ride itself

I think thT It whould be cool to see the space mouitn change. If the ride gets changed I think that it should have a lunch like you are going into space I aslo think that they should keep the same tracklayout but make it one big track isnde of two tracks.I rembeber what space moutin used to be like with out the fast pace the line whould be all the way out of the bluding and the whole inside whould be compely full you don'nt see that anymore I think that is a good thing.

Seeing that we are in Blue Sky mode here:

How about an Intamin Rocket Coaster? Launch straight up into a top-hat (going into space) Nigh on impossible fitting that in a building mind you, but as I said, blue sky... blue sky :)

I don't see why updating an already fun attraction would be bad to be honest. DL's space mountain update is supposed to feature some really kick but special effects and a new audio system. Are people really up in arms about the possibility of doing that in the Magic Kingdom...geesh. I just rode it in June with my nephew for his first time and we had a great time, but some updated special effects and the loss of the clankity clank sounds would really be welcomed.

P.S. Having ridden the last version of SM at DL before it was gutted, the on car audio really made for a great SM experience.
