Thanks for posting that. A very interesting. and informative article. I hate that this classic movie can't be released, but I understand why. Maybe our understanding about movies like this will change in another fifty years.

I am a white southern boy(VERY white actually! Most folks have a sun tan, I have a MOON tan)with a VERY strong southern accent who is married to the most beautiful "woman of color" that you have ever seen and we both love Song of The South and do not find it offensive at all. Just another example IMHO of people being waaay to PC and straining at a gnat. While I have no doubt racism is very much alive and well today, I don't think Walt Disney was at all being racist or careless with Song of the South,in fact, I think he was trying to convey a message of tolerance and equality. It's such a shame that peoples "uptightness" is keeping an amazing movie from being released to the masses. MAYBE my GREAT GRANDKIDS will finally see this movie released!

Oh,by the way, you can basically watch the whole movie on YouTube for those of you who have never seen it and are curious about it.

Thanks for posting, it was a good read. Having never seen this movie it kind of bugs me that I can't see it, but I do understand that Disney is just trying to save themselves some type of hassle by not releasing it.

Youtube? I am SO there.

BTW, I really think they should release this movie. If people think its racist, then they shouldn't buy it! Case closed! If they'll show a movie on TV with Bing Cosby painted black singing a song about Abraham Lincoln to a bunch of african americans, then they can show this.

Amen to that! Whatever happened to the old saying "if you don't like it, you don't have to watch it"? There is a very clever invention called a remote control, with which one can do a very cool thing if there is something on TV that they don't like. Drum roll please....they can....CHANGE THE FREAKIN' CHANNEL! If they see it in the store they can choose not to buy it! I don't know why the rest of us have to be deprived just because we have to pander to a segment of loudmouthed, whiney, whimpish, sniveling, bedwetting panzies who cry racism at every turn. And I also don't know why the standard isn't applied evenly to everyone. Some find "Song of the South" offensive, and as a result the rest of us can't see it because it won't be released.

Yet as a conservative Christian, I don't like the fact that so many shows portray homosexuality, or heterosexual adultry/fornication in a positive light, yet no one is pulling that stuff off the air on my account. I'm left with that *gasp* horrible responsibility of choosing not to watch the stuff if I find it offensive to my worldview. I don't know why people like myself just have to suck it up and deal with it if OUR values are offended, yet those in the PC crowd must be appeased and pandered to at all costs if THEIR values are offended.

:sohappy:

I hate political correctness and people who look for a reason to be offended.

It's a great flick that depicts a less than honourable aspect of history, but despite the oppressive "Yes sir massa'" position the lead character find himself in, he still behaves with a strong sense of what is right and rises above the situation.

Another great example is Blazing Saddles. I personally love this movie and don't find it offensive at all. The movie is actually skewering our perception of other races and making fun of our ignorance and intolerance but I can totally see how some people can find it offensive(my wife does). You can buy Blazing Saddles at pretty much any major retail outlet that sells movies and it is much, much worse than Song of the South. I do understand why Disney is being so careful with this but my theory is much like yours...release it and those who want to see it will buy it and those who don't won't. Let the public decide. Disney also deleted a small scene from Fantasia for the same reason.

Thanks for the link to a very good and well thought out article.

As you can see in my AVATAR and name this is my favorite Disney movie, (Teenchy my name- is the dog in the movie and in Uncle Remus's hands in my avatar) I got a copy in Europe where it was released at one time on laser disc.

I also happened to see it the last time it was release in theaters in 1986..I took my little niece at that time..never thought that it would be the last time anyone would have an opportunity to see the film.

I'm always so sad when i get off Splash Mountain and see how much fun everyone has had and singing along, etc and think that none of the kids on this ride and probably many of their parents dont even know the inspiration for that great ride. I really think the movie has a great message and have thought just as the writer said that if Gone with the Wind is a classic and shown all the time on tv, how can you say something bad about SOS.
I think the black actors in SOS are show in a much better light then those in GWTW.

So sorry that many of you may never have the opportunity to see this great movie, might have to take another look at it tonight:)
