Sometimes I wonder... Whats the main concern?

I will admit that when i was down there for Charley, I didn't prepare like I should have. We didn't go and get bottled water or any extra food at the store...I didn't think it was going to be as bad. Being from the north, I had never been through anything like that before! As for acting stupid, I know the guests at Carribean Beach freaked out when the first rain band came through. I felt like I was on the Titanic! People were grabbing for food like there was no tomorrow. One man tried to scoop up all of the fresh sandwiches that had just been put out. It was nuts! But overall, I know Disney did a great job of keeping the guests calm and informed. People complaining that their cable was out was just downright selfish. People lost their homes and in some cases, their lives and they are worried about tv? That's crazy!

TheDisneyGirl02 :)

That's how it was at the Beach Club during Charley. My mom and I each bought a bottle of water and a bottle of Coke, but the hotel took such good care of us that we really didn't need them and ended up bringing the water home with us. I wouldn't have cared if the cable had gone out because at that point I was more worried about my grandparent's house in Venice and one of my close friends who lives in Daytona Beach and if she was ok (my grandparent's house had no damage and my friend only lost power for a week with no significant damage but has been evacuated for Frances btw).

I know what you mean. We have a lot of flooding here, and during the floods there are always news stories about people having to be rescued because they tried to drive through standing water. Last time, two cars drove around the danger sign and were flooded.

All I can say is once people go on vacation, they lose their brains....

I couldn't agree more. And it's not just at Disney either. I'm always dumbfounded by tourists who visit San Francisco who cross against the light and then look at me like I'm the A$$hole for almost running them over. Some people just pack their bags and leave their brains at home.

YOu know what I'm sick of it, there is now excuse for not packing your brain...we should all be aware of our surroundings at all time...last rant for now...

I hope there are not too many stories like this for Frances. You would think people would be more considerate of what is happening to the state of Florida and its residents than to be stealing, rude, or expecting compensation for their vacation being "ruined". Whatever...

Perhaps Mr.Rasulo should have immediately printed up "Severe Storm Actions and Disclaimer" that Disney will immediately shut down the parks at any given time with no notice, guests staying on property will be transported to their rooms immediately and given a full days supply of water and snacks,(I'm actually thinking of Disney themed MRE's ;) ) entertainment will be provided of many of the more popular and family themed films like Brother Bear etc.
Quite frankly I'm not surprised about the stupid guests behaving like stupid guest, they always have and always will.

WARNING: HEAVY SARCASM

Many of the vacationers were right to complain. Take a look at Mr D's pictures that he posted . Sure, some people had chunks of their house missing, but they were still able to watch TV when they were evacuated elsewhere. Remember, people on vacation are gods, and we must all treat them as so. That being said, I hope to get everything done my way when I go on vacation next summer. Thank you.

SARCASM OVER.

P.S. I believe that the waiting list for the one brain is quite extensive. Many people don't get a chance to ever have it.

I know I'm not the first person, nor will I be the last person to slap some reality in an idiot tourists face.

idiot: "We demand compensation. This hurricane ruined our holiday"
me: You're here for 2 weeks, you arrived 4 days ago, you still have 10 days plus the money you've saved by NOT going out for 4 days
idiot: "We weren't warned about an oncoming hurricane"
me: this has been on all major worldwide news outlets.
idiot: "I'm mennonite!"
me: that must've been a long swim across the atlantic... liar.
idiot: "give me something for free"
me: I'll give you a return plane ticket home if you don't zip it

and now for the homespun idiot
idiot: "you guys need to comp my room since I was stuck here cause of a hurricane"
me: no we don't. you had a reservation beginning before the hurricane and extending until after it. furthermore, you were given the option to cancel with no penalty. The fact that you showed up, when a HURRICANE IS COMING, is a testament to your lack of common sense. If anyone should be giving us anything, is you thanking us for complying with each of your pointless requests and for not throwing you out on the streets when we had people offering us double what you're paying for a room
idiot: "i want to to your supervisor"
me: speaking!
idiot: "i demand compensation"
me: so do I. I want to be compensated for my higher insurance premium I will be paying when I renew, I want to be compensated for the last 3 days I've spent in this hotel, I want to be compensated for the financial burden placed on me by this hurricane, and I want to be compensated for dealing with 1400 tourists with unfair and impossible demands over the last 3 days. Get out of my hotel

You really need to work on your customer service skills..... However that does fit in with most or Orlando, outside of Disney.

:sohappy: That's freakin' awesome! I've had days where I would have liked to say something like that to an idiot, but would have gotten reprimanded or fired if I did... Where do you work? And like someone else just said, can I work for you? I'll need a job when I get down there in October anyway... ;)

Back when I was in college, I worked a summer at Cedar Point on a river-rapids ride.

When the ride was closed for weather-related reasons, one of us would have to sit at the entrance to inform the guests the ride was closed.

The following conversation would happen all too often.

Guest: Why is the ride closed?
Me: Due to weather, it is thundering and lightning
Guest: But it is a water ride, I am going to get wet anyway
Me: Yes, but lightning could interrupt the ride system, and cause an emergency evacuation, it is closed for your safety.
Guest: I should be able to decide what is safe for myself
Me: Well, when you own your own amusement park, you can
Guest: well, when is it going to reopen?
Me: When the weather clears and the lightning is a safe distance away
Guest: Well, when will that be?

Me: (reach for the phone at the entrance) Let me pick-up my God phone and ask (has conversation on God phone)

OR

Me: I don't know, maybe around 4pm

Guest: (back at 4pm) The ride is still closed
Me: It is still lightning
Guest: You said it would stop at 4pm
Me: I guess my powers are not what they used to be

People on vacation seem to leave their brains at home.

Dave, you know I'll be the first person to bend over backwards for a guest, but I also do what has to be done. There's a difference between good guest service and giving the guest your soul. You will find that the attitude of give the guest everything dissipates once you get into a supervisory/management position. You have to find a balance, and when a guest is being unreasonable, I will give them nothing until they try being a little more reasonable.

Just remember, as a CM, I had a guest ejected from MK for calling me an a-hole

I agree with Rob completely on this point. How many times have I seen people throw hissy fits at the counter when they don't get their way? As if yelling, screaming, and acting like a complete bunghole will really make the person on the other side any more of your friend.

I remember checking into a hotel once and when we got to our room, it hadn't been cleaned properly, i.e. Starbucks coffe cups on table. So back to the counter we went, the clerk apologized and sent us to another room and this time the air conditioner was broken and it was hot and stuffy. Back to the counter we went and the clerk apologizes and sets us up in another room. This time, there's no power in the room. This was in an upscale hotel mind you and all these things happening with the rooms perplexed me.

My BF was getting frustrated with lugging our stuff up and down and started to fume on the way back to the counter and was ready to rip them a new one. I calmed him down and told him to let me handle it. When the clerk saw me again for a third time, he apologized profusely, had the manager come over to apologize, and the manager upgraded our room to a suite for the length of our stay, personally escorted us to the suite and checked out everything to make sure it was okay and then sent up complimentary champagne!!

So see folks, it really does help to maintain your composure. People will always go out of their way to help your situation if they can and especially if you give them reason to.

OOOOOOOOH you just reminded me of one time with my family when we went to Florida and we got to the hotel, they gave us our room but it looked like people just checked out. Messy unmade bed, breakfast stuff scattered around, bathroom towls tossed everywhere!! We went back to the front desk and they said they were sorry but we ended up waiting for a hour in the lobby till we could get a room :-(
It was a busy season at the hotel but the house cleaning staff was being slow it seem! (we heard some people complaing that thier rooms weren;t cleaned yet!) .

Mistakes can happen. I am sure the hotel did not mean to check you in to a dirty room, nor would they have checked you in to that room if they knew it was dirty.

Some customers approach the staff with the attitude that the hotel is intentionally trying to ruin their stay. TRUST ME, the hotel staff wants to create and make-up for a problem even less than a guest wants to experience a problem.

ya, we didn;t mean complain :) We just told the front desk they gave us a dirty room and they said sorry so we just hung around the lobby and checked the gift shops as we waited for a clean room.
We did overhear many people complain like what you guys are talking about.
Yes the hotel was booked, it was one of thier busy months, the cleaning staff were slow but they had so many rooms to do.
When im in a hotel, I at least try to help out with my room :)
Put towels we'll use again on the rack, towels in the tub if we want replacements, put trash where it belongs. Sometimes we leave a note to ask for something (leave extra towels or a pillow..etc) and leave a tip. That probably makes housecleaning happy lol I know it did once cause the girl drew a smiley face and a "thanks!" on the note when we asked for some extra towels to be left hehe

I think a lot of times people forget that hotel staff are normal people too.. mistakes happens, nothing is perfect and if something goes wrong, they try to make it better :) I don;t even work in a hotel but ive heard a lot of people who assume everything has to be thier way of thier vacation is runined.

The only thing I have to complain about is rude people. But there will always be rude people everywhere you go :-(
