Some Hillish Details on the Idol Experience

And the sindicated on the Jumbotron things on Hollywood blvd? I might be ok with this if the jumbotron somewhere else...like in the back of the park on the Streets of Americas or something? but not right in the dead center!

I've got to believe that this Jumbotron idea will get squashed quickly. The last thing any park needs is to hear guests butchering 'A Whole New World' while trying to enjoy a sunny day at The World. Nobody needs to see or hear it as they walk up Hollywood.... Besides... that was the magic of the different lands & areas. You didn't have to worry about tomorrowland encroaching on frontierland.

This seems like a very niche oriented attraction. Basically there's no reason for anyone over or under the age limits of American Idol to bother with it since they can't use the prize anyway. And giving it to someone else is pretty much a waste of a day. I'm not a big Idol fan and its audience is dropping. Their main gain was with the older people 40 and up this last season. The only interesting part is the auditions and all the nuts that pop out of the woodwork. To get a seat to watch the show, probably is like watching bad kareoke and will only serve to get out of the heat for a little while.

I'm surpised no one mentioned that these Dream Passes will have all sorts of restrictions on them and might actually be null and void when it comes to actual American Idol auditions. Its simply not good tv and is seen as someone who 'paid' to get to the front of the line. Backlash from people who can't afford trips to WDW and all will follow.

Couldn't they just have done the Great Muppet Movie ride instead? At least that has a bigger appeal.

I may see thw show once, just to give it a chance. However, I just don't know how this is going to work out. All of the waivers and agreements in the world can't save Disney from bad press and negative feelings. If any guest who is voted off feels hurt enough, they'll bad mouth Disney to anyone who will listen. The whole thing, from the first audition to the last song, is about seeing who will fail the fastest. Does Disney really want their name on that?

And if that jumbotron goes up, I will visit the Studios even less than I care to now as it is. I've waited this long to get the guts to try TpT and RnRC; I can wait tuntil the jumbotron is gone. There's nothing in that park I'm so emotionally attached to that I'll brave the AIE jumbotron and the HSM show for. (That sounds selfish, I know.) The point of a show or ride is that people who want to experience it can get in line and those who don't can skip it. If you put the show outside, too, people who don't like AI will get angry, and people who wanted to see the show might decide it's better to just watch five minutes on the screen and then keep going. Showing the show outside the theater could decrease attendace rather than virtually boost capacity.

The possibilities for negative press and bad feelings are greater than any of the positives on this one, I think. We'll have to wait and see. Will the hurt feelings of a relatively small group of guests take down a show that could be very popular with the masses?

I'm one who's not totally down on this idea of having AI at Disney, however, I think they should have a choice of a prize...either you get a FP for the show, or you win something from YOMD...that way others can enjoy the prize as well.

Or those people could just walk past the jumbotron and not stop...no need to get angry over it. If I see something going on that I don't want to partake in, I simply ignore it.

I wonder if the Simon judge will have Disneyfied insults, something like you make me feel like one of the dalmatians that just saw Cruella DeVille. Just awful. Or something like that....

Seems like a lot of "fast passes" for the Idols to give out. I mean...on a daily basis, running all year long - that's 365 "passes" they will give out.

My guess is, and only an observation here, people would, myself included, want to see the final show of the day where all the contestants who "made it" are singing.
I don't know that I would be totally fullfilled if I went to the 1st show of the day, only to find out that the person who wins that round has to sing again in the final show - No true results until the end of the day. I'm not sure I would want to sit through 2 AI shows in one day (where I paid a lot of money to see "Disney" - not a reality show). And on top of that, for the person who wins the daily competition - that they may or may not make it onto the actual AI show. Just sounds like a lot of if's to me. :veryconfu

I really do hope this "attraction" does well so it can keep the lines for the Tower, Coaster and Mania to a minimum. :sohappy:

I for one have no interest in seeing this.

The Jumbotron will have to be on a delay, I would think. Say a guest is really gettting reamed out by the Simon type judge. The guest *could* get angry and start cursing and cause a bit of a ruckus. I think that Disney wouldn't want that to go out into the park on a giant television screen.

It was like a really short, toned down Halloween Horror Nights maze. Even toned down, people in scary costumes jumping out on kids and familes in the dark just ISN'T DISNEY. (-cough-idol-cough-)

So many small kids (including me at the time!) came out crying, that the Cast Member stationed at the exit would actually adress people coming out to complain to Guest Relations that this didn't belong.

Won't happen with American Idol, but you sure can see it from here...
:lookaroun

Wow,that's sad.

I already want to complain. Why is this even being considered?Doesn't Disney know that people that get rejected are going to complain?

They are digging their own Customer Relations grave on this one.:fork:

The first thing that came to mind was I really hope there is not going to be a barrage of people that have a had a drink or two and decided that they can sing really well hit this attraction. If you have ever been to a party with a karaoke machine you know what I mean. Although, the only weeks that I make sure I tune in to AI are the auditions. :lookaroun

He got nothing wrong as far as I know.
Like the concept or not, Jim's article is completely accurate.

I wonder if they'll do like the first few weeks of AI and take bad singers or weird people to go up on stage just so they can be laughed at by the audience...

Anyway, I think they'll seriously have to think about "Disney-fying" the judges so people's day/week/career move isn't ruined by it.

The next question, will they be singing Disney songs or others as well?

I didn't like this attraction before, I like it even less now. I will, in no way, be attending this show. It may fit into the idea of a "studios" themed park, and it will bring something into the center of DHS, but otherwise, this thing has no appeal to me. I fail to see why someone would spend thousands to come to Disney and then waste an entire day of their vacation trying to win a fake American Idol show at a theme park. Even for a local to come an try out for this thing; I dont understand why! :brick:

BTW - Someone tell Jim Hill that it might be a good idea to PROOFREAD the articles you write before you put them on the web. :hammer:

EDIT: A special thanks to Chris for helping me proofread.
