Some Burning Questions

yes and no.... I believe pixies go back to greek mythology actually, and they had very definitive characteristics, personalities, abilities, purposes, etc.

But, to my knowledge, pixies and fairies started getting grouped together in the late 1500's with the help of Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream" with the character puck, who is one of the "fairies", yet often described as a pixie because of his mischievous and cruel personality...

Thank you! You said what I was going to say! Just to add to it.... Tink is a pixie and pixies are fairies.

And since I can out-nerd people, there is no way that the Star Tours ride could be considered canonical, because the Speeders comes out of hyperspace well within the gravity shadow of the planet. In short, everyone on board would suffer a quick, but painful death

Well, I think you're looking too deep into the matter.

Oh they get worse in the Star Wars universe. The "Is Boba Fett still alive?" threads rival all of the monorail expansion and 5th gate threads combined. But I do agree, in the grand scheme of things it is pretty pointless.

Interestingly enough, George Lucas did contemplate adding the scene where Boba Fett climbs out of the Sarlaac Pit for the release of the DVD, but decided not too after all.

As for Tink, I guess what she really is doesn't matter. Tink is Tink and as someone said in this thread, as long as you have fun with it, it doesn't matter.

However, I would like to know about the choice of the number 45 in ST-45. You would think that with all the inside jokes and references Disney does, they wouldn't just choose a number to slap on the ship, but who knows.

There is a difference between pixies and fairies.

Pixies, sometimes called Pigsies in parts of England, are quite mischevious and fond of stealing, traditionally horses, but often will trick people, spell people, or cause people to disappear. They are small, humanoid creatures who have violent reactions to metals: silver burns their skin and can kill them if introduced into the bloodstream. There are three common myths about pixies. One is that they were a people too bad for heaven, but not bad enough for hell, and were made to live on Earth for eternity. Another is that they were a people (usually thought to be Druids) who were resistant to the spread of Christianity, and were forced by God to grow smaller and smaller until they succumbed. The third, and least popular, is that they are named after the Pictish people of Scotland, which is unpopular because the Picts were Celtic.

Fairies, also called faeries, fae, fay, or fey, are ethereal, supernatural, and/or metaphysical beings. In other words, magical beings. While also small and humaniod, some think that they are either an angel, spirits of the dead, or a seperate species of being. Some think their origin also relates to religious beliefs lost to Christianity. They have a heavy dislike for iron, and were thought to be downright mean in some cultures, stealing babies or abducting people. Faeries are thought to fly by magic, without wings. In folklore, they are thought to be anything from angels, to fallen angels, to actual devils, to spirits in purgatory, that they are elemental beings. The ancient religions of Ireland referred to the Tuatha de Dannan (ancient Gods and Goddesses) as faeries in some texts. Faeries love to trick travelers into taking a wrong path, and many would wear their coats inside out to confuse faeries. They can also be devastating to a garden, but can be appeased by gifts of milk.

While there are many similarities between pixie and fae, there are numerous differences throughout history. Neither comes off as overly friendly, but pixies are just mischevious. Fae can be straight out nasty for almost no reason - but friendships can easily be won with respect and gifts. Fae also play a part in certain Neo-Pagan religions, and have a rich history intertwined with ancient religious beliefs.

I spent every summer of my childhood in Ireland, and I remember being told not to go out into the garden at night because the fairies would steal us. My brother and I were terrified of them. I'm sure my mother was laughing behind her hand at us. We were convinced we saw them through the window, too, but now I realize it was probably just fireflies.

I have heard about the inside out coats, but never about the milk. Very interesting, thanks for all the info.
