Some advice?

One question for every runner here. I run at appt 8-9 min per km. ( or around 6.7 km/hour) not too fast I think.
I run walk for 45sec -60sec. Today I increased my running to 60sec still at a relatively slow speed.
During any run I get dizzy. Like I need to sleep all of a sudden and then feel drunk. When I then arrive home like today after 3,5 k I nearly passed out. Heart rate gets very fast and I feel like all the lights go out. Very very uncomfortable.

Happens even after I have done the cooling down walks so I'd think my heart has had time to adjust.
It's a nasty part of running and am wondering what I could be doing wrong or what I can do to prevent that last part.
I usually whack my bed or pillow vigorously to help me not pass out.... but I'm not sure what happens.

Is this still a sign I went too far too fast too quickly? Could it be about Food and water?
It takes the joy out of running for me and I hope to find something to make it less extreme.

Anyone any advice? Especially now during my favorite time: fall. Best season to run for me. :)

it sounds like your hydration / sugar intake.. bc when i first started running this happened to me .. , one time i came in from a run i felt all clammy , and had to lay down .. so i had to get some sugar , like oj in me .. or i felt like i would throw up .. so i would suggest trying your in take

I've had a 24h EKG and purposely did some running then. Ofcourse nothing happened so nothing was registered. I'm not sure to ask for another one. Doc says it's just overdoing.

I am going to watch my ch intake a little more closely. I do feel that urge when this happens to stuff myself with quick ch. So maybe that is the problem. Hydrating is likely good, but maybe I should try with liquids and carbohydrates combined.

Should it persist then maybe I should consult my Doc again or go straight to a sportscenter and get the whole lot done again.
Until then taking it easy and likely do my 5k in Nov at a low pace and lots of walking anyway. It would be so messy if a blob of black and neon yellow is flat out on the pavement.... doesn't make a great finisherphoto :cold:

You shouldn't be having any hydration or fuel issues during a 5K. But try eating something like peanut butter or a power bar and drinking water an hour before going out. Also work on your breathing. I have to work to make sure my breathing is steady during a long run. If I don't I will almost stop breathing and get dizzy. It's happened to me a few times, especially when I get into a zone.

I will, could barely finish a 2k yesterday inspite of the fuel and breathing tips.
For Jingle Jungle that means walking and no running...

Are you following a plan? Check out Jeff Galloway's plans. Sounds like you need a run/walk plan so don't do Couch-2-5K. Too much continuous running. When I started running again I actually did a 2:1 run/walk and even did a 3:1 for my first half marathon. Even a 14-minute pace gives you time for a picture stop or two.

Also, when you get to the actual race the adrenalin will be flowing and you might even be a little nervous. This will give you extra energy you didn't have during training.

Thanks :)
I'm actually following Jeff already. But maybe I should increase the walk and slow the running down....

For now no training though as I'm in the hospital for a few weeks. So that 5k is gonna be a slow one. (If at all, yikes! )

But well that way I get to at least experience it. And taking the time to soak up the whole thing, let's stay positive :)

How hot and humid is it where you are? Sometime a combination of not enough water and the humidity makes me dizzy. I always stop as soon as I feel that coming on. Also, do you have a heart rate monitor? If so, keep an eye on it and if you get up to your max, go ahead and walk. I unfortunately know how you feel :/ it's tough not knowing exactly how to fix an issue you're having!

Thanks for the link!

I suppose the message and conclusion remains then to visit my Doc (again). That last paragraph is me. I know to keep walking after a run and not stop all of a sudden but that really doesn't do anything either. So I should probably accept that it's a no running 5k for me this year.
As said: that does give me lots of time to soak everything up. As long as I can simply go and take part, that's the most important thing this year. And do it with sense and not "must run". It's not fun for me nor the others if I go down.

Agree, play it safe, see how you feel. If you feel good try a jog and stop if you feel dizzy.

Another thought: Think about your posture and don't lean backwards or tilt your head back. That can cut off your breathing. Stay upright but it's better to lean slightly forward than backwards.

If you want to get serious see if your doc will refer a sports medicine facility.

Sounds to me like a hydration or breathing issue, as others have said. But like everyone else mentioned , the best thing is to see a doctor to make sure there's not some other undetected issue. And if you haven't purchased a sports watch with a heart monitor, look into getting one. I have a Fitbit Surge - love it. I think Mio now makes one.

It might be simple. It's probably anxiety that turns on "the system". I've been able to do some runs which went ok. With some new meds. I do sometimes feel a bit weird but posture does seem to help and so is taking it easy instead of trying to run fast.
Did a 3.3k tonight and it wasn't totally smooth but it wasn't horrible either. So while I may not run the 5k fully, some parts are probably doable carefully.

Actually.... getting back to this thread.
The problem was probably a bit different.
I ran my Jingle Jungle and then crashed from the day after onwards. I was excited though and signed up for Paris 5k in september this year. Looking forward to it but also a little scared.

As said, after 20 years of searching for an answer to my tiredness and excessive need of sleep and no doctor to take it seriously enough to send me to a sleepneurologist I finally managed to get the referral.
(Here you can't just decide to go to a specialist, without a referral from the gp you can't go).

To keep a long story short: i've probably been running on empty almost literally.
My sleep is so disturbed and of low quality I only reach a third of both Rem sleep and deep sleep. Your body tries to compensate for the lack or healing with adrenalin. Try doing that for at least the past 10 years or more likely 20.... and it's kind of understandable why these issues occurred.
Apart from that I probably have hypersomnia or narcolepsy as well so I don't even understand how I managed all this time.

I can't run right now or even walk much . I sleep almost the entire day because my body gave up last Feb.
I am being treated for the sleepquality first and otherwise be put on Ritalin.

I still feel hope I may get enough training if the meds work to run or walk a 5k but at this point it feels quite far away.

This all may explain so much and also why I never got to run for much longer than 2 minutes tops after 6 months.
I hope with the PROPER treatment I get to fully enjoy running again.

I just hope that I get to enjoy the 5k at all. (I don't mind walking this year ). But just being there, that's still tricky.

It is good to finally know though. And childish as it may sound, it felt good to have been right all along.
Now it's time to go forward and up. As my tattoo says: *believe*.

One day that half marathon may even be possible :)
