Soarin's Editing

I don't hate the jump cuts, I just would prefer a better transition. But what I really want is Soarin over the world or over Florida or anything but California. Why california? It's across the country! It works find with DCA, since its in California obviously. But Epcot, in Florida? Nah
Since our Soarin' is themed to an airport, wouldn't it be great if we could choose multiple destinations? I think the current ride film is a classic; obviously I think the presentation could be improved, but the film itself can stand the test of time. Build that rumored third theater, then use two for a new film and one for "flights to the Golden State of California". Both would absolutely be popular, IMO.

I'm going to disagree in the fact that it's a problem. Would it be better with smoother transitions? Yes, it would. But I don't consider this a problem by any means, because I do love the transitions as they are, even though they could be better. Little things like that shouldn't really bother you. Enjoy the ride for what it is.

10 min spent on YouTube will show you that youth are obsessed with jump cuts. I'm sure anyone under 25 doesn't even notice it.

A cross fade transition could be added to smooth things out (and does not add time to the film) but I think imagineers wanted to keep the viewer excited and not lull them with smooth transitions.

I love the attraction. I hate the queue. And the film needs a cleaning. I also wouldn't be opposed to a new film.

The jumping around doesn't bother me at all actually I find it to be find and doesn't ruin the effect... however....
I like it the way it is just wish they would fix the bad black spots that show up!
Those spots ruin the experience of Soarin... the whole flying effect the ride gives is lost with those spots on the screen.

I love to see a Soarin around the world... there are so many great and magnificent places around the world and would be amazing with the Soarin effect.

Yes, yes and yes. I watched the ride video and counted: you would need to add 12 transitions. Even if you could do each one in five seconds (I think that's the ABSOLUTE minimum), you're adding a full minute to each ride cycle. That's knocking at least one ride cycle/175 riders per hour off of the THRC... that's 2,100 fewer riders accomodated in a 12 hour operating day. And that's before you even tackle the question of whether or not you can make transitions like this work. Shooting up to the cloud line every 25 seconds would feel weird contrasted with the generally peaceful movement of the rest of the scenes. Or having a CGI cloud drift in out of nowhere, or some random tree branch cut across the screen... I think it would get old fast. Real fast. I'm not saying the ride film is perfect (just don't say anything bad about the music around me!), but I think the jump cuts are effective.
I think the "shooting up to the sky" was just an example of something that would be more interesting and themed than a jump cut. The answer wouldn't be adding time to the film/ride cycle, but really a more creative film could have been created in the first place, perhaps with less locations but more interesting transitions that tie it all together. The way it is now feels, at least to me, like a exhibit, a demonstration, something you would find at a science museum of some sort, not an immersive theme park experience.

The Smithsonian channel has two shows Aerial America and Sky View that are really nice and I have watched them over and over. Of course I don’t smell the oranges or feel the breeze in my face or have the sensation of hang gliding but I’m also not waiting 2 hours to watch it. It would be nice if Disney could figure out an agreement with this channel and come up with something new.

I have to agree with you ...i think this was the intent of the editing, to create visual excitement to match the physical excitement the Guest is having on the ride system.

I like the jump shots, but I am young-ish (under 30, but not by much) and while I do love the ride, I do wish they would go the route of Star Tours and create a randomization of scenes from where ever ( I can only see that golf ball fly at my face so many times) World, USA, Florida, anything else besides Cali with a final fly over of a different park.....

I hate Soarin and this is the the main reason why I do. Jump cutting is just lazy and looks terrible.oh and the sped up LA scene which then cuts to a slow flight over Disneyland. It doesn't work.

What Soarin needs is brand new HD digital films of several different continents which are randomised so you have a chance to see somewhere different every time you ride.
Boy, you sure are the go to guy around here for HD! Do you think they should get some HD film and projectors on Illuminations too?:D

I love Soarin'. It's one of my favorite Disney attractions ever. The jump cuts are great.

My problem with Soarin' at WDW is twofold. One: Location. Why is it in the Land pavilion? I have no idea. Why is the EPCOT Soarin' all about California? I have no idea. Soarin' at DCA is fantastic. Soarin' at WDW, while still great, is out of place (and the queue is weird, too). Two: IMAX technology has improved a lot since the attraction was built. I wish it was getting refurbed to keep up with the technology.

The best part about Soarin' is that it's an E ticket ride that all ages can enjoy. It's an original ride that's not tied to a merchandising franchise, and I love it for that.

I'd love to see a Soarin' style ride or two in World Showcase. Soarin' Over China? Soarin' Over Canada? Could be beautiful. It's not like there aren't plenty of film crews and beautiful landscapes in China and Canada. (You'd have to avoid China's cities, though, as nobody wants to fly through the smog)

Lol what is your problem seriously? Soarin is not HD and looks crap. Disney is way behind technologically and they need to keep up. Sad considering Disney was the most advanced a few decades ago. And why would Illuminations be HD? Are you stupid? You aren't funny at all sir, or rather little boy. You are the first person I have had to use the ignore button on. Congratulations.

I went on Europe in the Air. In my opinion, the ride is terrible. I went on a second time just to get a laugh. When you take off, huge fans in the ceiling blow air onto you. Simply look left, right, or up and you see the walls of the building. Their transitions are better than Soarin, I agree.
