Soarin

It was a safety issue. They found that two guests had gotten out of there seats somehow bfore the ride started and were standing in the corner while the ride was in motion. No one was hurt but the stunt prompted an immediate shut down of both versions to re-write the OG's for safety so it cannot happen again. No time frame as to when it will be open.

Hard to account for the jerks in life...

Hey, this reminds me of the discussion we had three months ago. 'Rides you will not go on'.
Soarin terrifies me. I am happy that at last Disney adresses the safety issues on Soarin'.

I know what you mean. I find Soarin´ the most terrifying ride in WDW.

I'm sitting there, suspended 40 feet in the air, with just a loose belt, and I'm thinking ´if I were to fall asleep, I'd slide out of this chair and fall to my doom...´:lookaroun

On the issue of safety though, I've often wondered what would happen if a guest came out of their seat either voluntarily or on accident while the film is going. It doesn't appear that they are actively monitoring guests while they are in the air.

There is a CM stationed in the theater during flight. They sit at a console off to the far side on whichever side is the exit side for your theater, a bit out in front of the railing at the front of the loading area. They have a view of the carriages when they're in the up position.

The CM at that console has two E-stop options:
The usual option isn't an actual E-stop in the industrial machinery sense, but rather a Show Stop. It ends the show and returns all carriages to the ground.

The actual E-stop button halts all motion and locks all machinery in place. This is only ever used when any movement by the carriages could cause serious harm to either riders or someone on the ground, which it sounds like is the case in this instance. (Because a Guest on the floor could've been hit by a carriage returning to the floor)

But in just about any other instance, the CMs are told to use the show-stop button and *not* to use the E-stop button, because resetting from the E-stop requires Maintenance intervention and a lot of downtime.

Maybe there could be some kind of 'idiot test' before boarding Soarin', and those who do not pass get better restraints...like the ones we discussed last week that they are putting on SM at DLP. :)

So did this happen at Epcot or DCA?

SO i heard a rumor from a bus drivers brothers sisters uncle
it appears that the ride will no longer go in the air instead we will have strobe lights underneath the seats to have the appearance of movement.

they could strap problem guests in like this

This is a similar situation to the what happened with Splash Mountain. No problems for years, and then people all of a sudden start deciding to get out.

more and more people are becoming idiots who don't think of anyone but themselves as the world goes on. It's a shame people can't just act in a respectable manner when out in public.

Hmm.. Me thinks two idiots simply fasten their seatbelt while standing, then sat on it.

Sometimes they have to release the seatbelts in sections if a guest gets an article of clothing stuck in it. The 2 guests could've simply decided not to ride while the CM was taking care of this issue.

Not to date myself here, but it use to happen on Space Mountain a lot during the 80's with the old rockets. Some idiots thought it was fun to take off their belts and try to stand up causing the ride to go 101.
