What will the smells be for flying over NY? O'da Trash dump?
How will people know where they are or what country they're flying over? The current version assumes the entire flight takes place within California. But what about a flight that covers the entire world?
Obviously, if you're flying over pyramids, you're probably in Egypt. But some of the world's most spectacular scenery is not necessarily so iconic. So how would people know?
A travel guide or a pre-flight orientation film could work. But I hope that the film either speaks for itself by sticking to things few people could confuse (The Eiffel Tower, for instance) or at least avoids using on-screen text to identify the landmarks and national destinations. I could see that happening, and I think it would be garish and distracting.
Soarin' was opened during the celebrations where other attractions and shows from other Disney parks around the world came to WDW. Also included that year were Lights, Motor, Action stunt show and Cinderellabration. These were built to be exactly like their counterparts. It had nothing to do with being "too cheap to film an east coast version."

I agree. I can't imagine they would spend dollar 1 on updating this ride while it remains far and away the most popular attraction in Epcot. They tend to wait until it is about 5 years past the time when an attraction is dead empty (think The Living Seas and Imagination) before they even start to think about updating things.
They can use the video I put together for my backyard imagineering version of Soarin'......

Wow, that is so cool!
As for the footage you used, now THAT is what the new Soarin footage should be like. Soaring over beautiful natural land marks of the world, thus tying it into the Land pavillion's theme. Some of that footage was pretty spectacular too like the Buffalo stampede and the big waterfall, just imagine seeing it in the Soarin Imax!
My only critique, I think a lot of the clips were too short. But I suppose that's beause of the footage you had to work with right?
I don't really think it matters. It's the same as the current version-- I can only name a couple of the locations in California even though they are named in the little pre-ride video screen loop, and have no idea where most of the rest of the particular scenes are filmed (and I live in CA!!) I think the important part is that it's all pretty to look at =pHow will people know where they are or what country they're flying over? That IS cool (and the low-tech "actuator" is adorable...I hope y'all take turns).
I suspect the length of the clips is limited more than anything by the musical cues. If you've never edited a film before, it may seem like you could just throw Broughton's score behind any footage you like and it'd look great, but to really maintain the Soarin' effect, you need to make sure the action onscreen syncs with the music and sound, which Bob seems to have done quite well.
posted this yesterday:wave:
hey does it have all the sound effects? i'm looking for a copy that's just the music

NY flyover starts in Newark amid the chemical refinery stacks and naturally includes that wonderful "aroma".
Thanks! Actually it was a combination of queues and clip lengths. I tried to match the queues, but also had times when the clip lengths were not long enough. It took a while to find enough fly-over clips to cover the whole song.
