I like California more, but have always been miffed that they completely ignored the Southern Cascades. Mount Shasta is one of the most beautiful and unique parts of the state, but seems to be ignored due to the extreme Northerness of it. Get rid of some of the Southern California crap for it, Disney!

Northern California is fly-over country, not soar-over. ;)

I was fully prepared to embrace Soarin' Around the World, but the CGI is so completely frustrating (notably the Taj Mahal scene) and the scene wipes are goofy. Also the "grass" scent is NOT pleasant for anyone with allergies. Ultimately I ride it without complaint, but I do definitely prefer the original!

I love Soarin', and you just can't replace that first time experience, but I think therein lies the problem for me. Whichever one you like, it is sort of a once and done ride. I certainly wouldn't wait to ride it again without a FP+. This is actually one of the disappointments for me with the current direction of Epcot rides. I do them every time we go, but you don't need to, and if we miss one I don't worry about it. Mission Space, Soarin', Test Track, done once you've done them (there is no redoing the first time rush). Horizons, Space Ship Earth, even Living with the Land, etc, you can (could) ride over and over and see something new every time....those were/are the classic Disney dark rides that have staying power to me. Yes they need to be refreshed periodically, but they are longer, more immersive experiences.
I feel the exact same way.. EPCOT is the park I go to the least but hopefully it'll be getting a nice refresh soon.

I was disappointed by Soarin over the World. The premise is that you're flying past and through some of the most gorgeous and important vistas on the planet with some of the best views and cameras around, and they still had to throw in some cheap-looking CGI bits to distract from it. The fireworks at the end of Soarin over California always seemed a little cheesy, but the rest of the film was unadulterated natural beauty so it was more easily ignored (imo).
There were scenes in soc that were fake too. The golf ball, the cloud transitions, and tinkerbell come to mind.

Hey! Tinker Bell is not fake!

I too prefer the original one, it could be because it was the one I rode first.

I don't understand why rides like these, that being any ride that uses a screen, don't have many different version's to the ride that would constantly get rotated.

The worst part of the new version is the extreme distortion, I have to sit dead center or forget it. Also I thought that the image quality would have been much better than it ended up being.

I still try to ride this each time I go, but my excitement lessens each time. Except for the part with Tink.

So.. title says it all. Which version do you think is better? In my humble opinion, I heavily prefer Soarin' Over California. What do you all think?
Oh man, glad you started this thread. The new Soarin was the biggest disappointment. Begging for Dis to please bring back the old or make a new one that was as fun as the old, where it swooped down and around and didn't act like it was going to crash into everything just to try and freak you out with bad CGI effects. By the way does anyone know if the old was CGI because if it was it was so entertaining it had me fooled.

The golf ball, hang glider, and fireworks are CGI.
The climbers, horseback riders, etc are real.

I've only seen the World version bootlegged, not in person.
It's too busy, not relaxing and awe inspiring like a hang-gliding experience should be. Too much quick, where am I now? before it changes to something else. The CGI added takes away as well. The result is like watching a movie on TV and an annoying animated pop up ad for some other show pops up in the lower right or left corner.
1/2 the family loves it and could go multiple times. For me, either version is a one and done. It's another "put you in a box and show you a movie" ride , except the box is a bit more open with feet in front of you unless you are in the top row.

I went to SDL in November and actually skipped Soarin.
I heard it was around the world and even though I knew it would have a different ending I prioritized it as a low and did not have the time to see it. (only there for one day)

New version: Great idea in concept. Poor in execution.
  • Less than stellar soundtrack (True it uses some of Goldsmith's but is disjointed)
  • Smells that aren't very distinguishable (raise your hand if you miss the oranges)
  • Distracting CGI. You can pinpoint the CGI animal or whatever as soon as you see it, knowing that will be the means for the transition. A simple fade would have been better
  • "Bent" buildings (45 degree Eiffel Tower anyone?)
I don't discount the time and effort it took to film scenes around the world and they are to be commended for that. But the final execution could have been better.

They did not "travel" very far to do the Taj Mahal "filming"
