Or, if you don’t want to go to the PTR, a quick recap:

When

We were down at WDW from August 19th to the 28th

Where

Back when we were planning this trip, we asked Steph and Liam where they wanted to stay. Steph wanted Boardwalk, and Liam wanted Poly (we’re DVC btw). We decided to give them both what they wanted, and did a split stay. We spent the first 5 days at a garden/pool view room at the Boardwalk, and the last 4 days at a lake view room at the Poly.

Well…let’s get started

Countdown – everything up to August 18th

Where to start… We were pretty busy right up until we were on the plane to head to Florida. We did most of the packing for the trip in the few days before the 19th, and were really looking forward to getting away.

We took our cat Zoey over to my parent’s house on the 17th (my Dad loves cats and loves it when the cats get to stay over),
zoey.jpg

and our dog Cooper was picked up on the morning of the 18th to go to his daycare/overnight place.

We’ll miss the animals.

We’re almost ready to go…

However, as I mentioned in the PTR, my Mom was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer back in May and I had been going with my Mom and Dad to all of her appointments (I was there to take notes and ask questions, as my parents are both 80 and tend to get things mixed up). The reason this plays into the trip report is because we found out during the first week of August that she was going to have surgery on August 18th.

So, after weeks and weeks of appointments, the 18th finally arrived. As you can imagine, it was a bit of a different day than what you normally expect on the day before a Disney trip. Yes, we were excited about the upcoming trip, but also anxious about Mom’s surgery (and also very well aware that if there were complications then the trip would be postponed).

Here's my Mom and I at the hospital waiting to get checked in

The good news is that everything went very well. Mom’s surgery was at 9am, and lasted about 2 hours. After a few hours in recovery we were able to see her. She was kind of groggy, but was doing well.

I brought my Dad back to our home after we saw her, so that he could take a nap (he didn’t sleep well the night before the surgery). He slept for about an hour and then headed back to the hospital.

At around 4ish we finished packing up the car, and then I drove Tammy and the kids down to the hospital to see my Mom. I was surprised at how well Mom was doing. She was wide awake and was already asking the Dr if she could just go home that day (I already though it was crazy that you only stay in less than 24 hours after a mastectomy). She is one tough lady. Everyone was happy to see her doing so well, and she kept telling us we should get going, so we did.

We jumped in the car and headed across the border to Buffalo. We made a few stops (Sam’s Club (picked up some more gift cards and some breakfast stuff), the hotel (the Sleep Inn by the airport), the airport (to weigh our bags so there would be no panicked repacking at the airport the next morning), and the Cracker Barrel (for dinner)). We were back in our room by around 9:30 and settled in for a few hours of sleep before our super early (3:15am) wake-up call.

see you tomorrow

Day 6 continued - swim and a snack

After getting settled we threw on our bathing suits and headed down to the pool. We decided to go to the Oasis pool this time (it was under construction the last time we were there so we were looking forward to seeing how it looked).

We loved this pool. As @lostpro9het mentioned in his TR, if we were going to be staying around for the day we could be tempted to rent one of the cabanas, because those things look nice.

We swam for a while and started feeling a bit “peckish”. We didn’t want to eat anything too big since we were going to ‘Ohana in a few hours (it was around 6 at this time). We went over to the Oasis bar area and ended up getting two orders of fried wantons and an order of pork sliders.

All were good and filled us enough to get by.

After eating and hanging around the pool a bit more we headed back to our room to get ready for dinner. Before long it was time for dinner, so we headed over to the Great Ceremonial House.

We entered into the lobby and noticed a photographer was there, so we got some pictures done first.

After the pictures we headed up to the check-in desk at ‘Ohana, and made our presence known. Before long our buzzer was going off, and it was time to eat.

still to come - 'Ohana

Day 6 continued - 'Ohana

20170824_202808.jpg

We head into the dining room and head to our table. We start with our bread which is always good.
20170824_205407.jpg

Not long after we took our seats the lights dimmed and “Happily Ever After” started at the MK. We loved the soundtrack. We’re not usually into fireworks shows, but decided we had to see this at least once before we left.

Next up was the salad.
20170824_210159.jpg

It is also so good (although I do view it as “filler” … don’t fall for it people…. The big $ items are coming).

Shortly after that the other sides come (the wings, broccoli (which I love), pot stickers, and noodles).
20170824_211348.jpg

Finally, the meats start coming. We had chicken, shrimp and steak. All so good.

To finish thing off, the bread pudding arrived (along with some brownies). Delicious.

Then for the bad ending…the bill…I knew what to expect, but there was still a bit of sticker shock…$43 per person before tax and tip…

So this is where my “Controller/CPA” personality takes over. $43 US works out to around $60 CDN per person. After tax and tip we’re around $70 CDN per person. That’s almost $300 for a meal. Ouch. And the sad thing is, we don’t eat anywhere near enough to justify spending that (by the time it was done we had each eaten about 1.5 pieces of steak, 2 shrimp and 1 piece of chicken). I could see if you could pack the food away (like the table beside us where they brought shrimp and each person took about 8), but we just can’t eat that way. On top of that (and I hope I don’t give Disney any ideas), at that price point how is it not considered a signature restaurant. The meal that Tammy and I had at Boathouse was less on a per person basis than ‘Ohana ended up being. As much as we love ‘Ohana, and I had no complaint about the food quality, I think this may be our last time here as we just can’t justify the cost vs the food intake (when we got back to the room we actually ended up cancelling our Trail’s End ADR for Sunday since buffets just aren’t worth it for us).

After dinner we wandered around the beach area a bit before calling it a night. It was another great day, and a fun first day at Poly.

See you all tomorrow

I feel your pain
I have no problem spending big dollars for a meal if I believe I am getting value
Tiffins is expensive but it was unique and I loved it and extremely enjoyable dining experience - hence value
Most other restaurants in Disney (Land and World) do have give me good value
(Carthay at DLR does for example)

We don't go to 'Ohana anymore for the exact same reason. I think that if you're staying at the Poly, you can have it delivered to your room. I'm not sure how much it is per person, but I've heard that they give you a lot of food so you order for less people than you actually have.

Yup! The twilight feast may be what you should try in the future. Your crew could probably get by with two adult orders and still have leftovers.

Completly agree. If we ate enough to justify the price I'd happily pay it. For some reason we just can't eat enough to make it worthwhile

The kind of "sad" thing is that we love 'Ohana, but the price is more than I'm willing to pay for what I eat.

Nice room - thanks for sharing the pics
Have not seen that style in person

You're welcome. If you get a chance to stay at the Poly studios, you should take it. The two bathrooms are great (and there is a "bonus" murphy bed under the TV - the kids loved that one).
