So, Maybe Established IP Ain't Such a Bad Thing - Busch's Curse of DarKastle Closing

...on the other hand we can also have Space Mountain, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, Expedition Everest, Soarin', Pirates, Haunted Mansion...

We know that using an existing IP can reduce risk by reducing the chances an attraction will be unpopular, but we also know that Disney has an excellent track record of developing popular original attractions.

And having every attraction connected to an IP weakens the holistic experience of visiting a theme park, making it feel less like a believable "other world" that one can get lost in. So there is likely a serious, long-term harm to IP infusion for Disney.

That you for posting this. It's very sad to see this happening. I wish they had been able to provide more advance notice, as I would have wanted to go down and ride it before it closes.

I rode it in 2010 when we took our daughter to Williamsburg. Very cool tech, and interesting ride. I honestly think it was under appreciated. The more sad part is there is no replacement plan at this time other than a christmastown, and halloween time building use.

The attraction isn’t incomprehensible because it lacks IP. It’s incomprehensible because it’s a beat for beat recreation of Spider-Man which itself is a largely incomprehensible assault of characters (that just happen to be well known and make people ignore the story flaws)

Talk about ridiculous, nonsensical stretching. Despite its Thea Award, Curse of DarKastle has never been well received, including by those currently at SeaWorld. It’s not some gem that was overlooked because it lacked IP.

They should turn it into Count von Count's Castle Adventure.

Yeah, I rode it once just after it opened. (Haven't had a chance to get back to the park since then) The storyline was incredibly difficult to follow.

Just a bit of a bummer on the timing since the American Coaster Enthusiasts will be there in June as part of this year's CoasterCon multi-park event. Would've been nice to get to ride it once more.

I'm an every few years visitor to BG and rode this attraction a few years ago...man did that ride make me ill. That is why I have avoided Spiderman and the likes. Is this ride similar to Spiderman/Transformers/Potter?

Yes, but personally none of those rides made me ill when I rode them. I haven't been to Williamsburg since the 1980s so I don't know if this particular ride is (was) more retch-inducing.

Robert Niles lacks a few brain cells, let's not stoop to his level.

If people couldn't understand an original storyline, there would never be, or have ever been, a new successful franchise. We wouldn't have Star Wars, Soarin', Spongebob, Sonic, Mario, Potter, etc. They would've been rejected on the spot by people scratching their heads in confusion! "I've never heard of this before, therefore I cannot understand the story!" The problem here was with the story itself. For someone who claims himself the "theme park insider" he doesn't understand them very well.

Curse of DarKastle uses a ride system that Oceaneering was “inspired” to create after working on The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man. The Harry Potter attractions use completely different ride systems.

I'm more upset this is being replaced by a special events venue than a new ride. But, oh well that's how things go.
I agree 1 billion percent, the only reason to have a replacement is to make it better than the original attraction.
But, don’t worry, over the next few decades, the industry will change to not cater to money-laundering executives to guests, customers, and shareholders :)

I used to live close to BGW and would frequent he park often since 2003. When DarKastle arrived into the park I loved it. It reminded me of a more grown up Haunted Mansion. ( that was the only park at the time I could compare things to) Now that I’ve been to Universal, Seaworld, and BGT, I really am sad to hear this ride is leaving. This ride was one of the greater rides at BGW and my biggest issue is they close this ride, but suggest to everyone to ride their new VR ride due out this spring. However, I feel like if that uses the same technology as Kraken, that ride will be closed sooo quick, and this closure will really effect the park as it being one of the only indoor rides. IMO, BGW is better than BGT and this was something Tampa didn’t have. Hopefully they make great use of the space for Howl o Scream.

I was pretty upset when I saw this was going too.

When I made my long trek up to BGW, it was Pompeii, Darkastle, and Alpengeist that inspired me to visit. Darkastle was weird but cool. Sad more regional parks don't take chances on cool dark rides like this.
