So if Disney rebuilt a River Country exactly as it was

Sorry, not exactly what I meant, I thought there was something about the "status" of the land being more tax advantageous or had something to do with Reddy Creek. I really can't remember and now its going to drive me nuts.

Sorry, I can't help you there but I'm sure Martin will know.

Probably best to tag him.

Though, you could be thinking of the rumors that came out a while back that there were going to be DVC resorts with a western theme built on the plot. I'd suspect it just wasn't worth the expense for Disney to demo it, considering it's rather out of the way. How many normal visitors even make it over to Ft. Wilderness, in the grand scheme of things? Hoop dee doo and the BBQ are the main draws now...but many (most?) gloss right over it.

One of the biggest factors was capacity as well. Hypothetical situation where they were able to reopen the park tomorrow and everything was running like it was in the glory days. Realistically, not that many people were able to go to it and it wasn't easy to get to either. So for the few amount of people that it was able to house, the cost of running it, parking and the difficulty of bringing people to and from the area, it wouldn't be worth it.
The two water parks already have capacity issues and top out easily on busy days. This wouldn't fix the problem.

I'm not sure about any tax advantages though you'd hope there is a valid reason for this and Discovery Island being left to rot for so long. Yep, there was a solid plan to build another DVC on the RC plot. Maybe it'll still happen one day.

Without major infrastructure upgrades and a change of the surrounding environment there won't be another attraction for the general masses. The location is wrong now.

While the slide and lazy river look awesome, not sure I'd want to swim in water that color of green. Did the lazy river end up dumping you in Seven Seas/Bay Lake? :hungover:

I didn't think River Country had a "lazy river" in the common sense of the phrase.
They had a meandering single-rider raft course with multiple splashdowns, though.
The place really was quite limited by today's standards.

As has been noted, it was amazing at the time, but more akin to a deluxe resort pool today.

sorry if its been asked befor but if you rent sea racers can you cruise past and see river county?

Yes you can. Only a bit of it really, mainly the part where the bridge and ropes were. But if you've ever been to River Country it brings back many memories.

Why was the water green anyway? Is it green chlorine? It resembles an untreated pool with tons of algae. Green = gross, unless the green is money, that is.

We went as kids and as adults with our kids. We loved it. We would go if rebuilt with the proviso that it was very crowded and we would hope that they would have a more limited allowable attendance figure. Since it was so small, it quickly became jammed. A limited number of tickets and maybe FP+ reservations would work here where there is a finite "ride throughput"

He could be confusing the paint and light reflections. The smaller pool was "blue" because it was painted blue.

But, the water was quite clear. Not green.

You mean from the birds eye view a few posts back, I just twigged that myself. As you say though, the water was clear.

It was a groundbreaking thing back in 1976. Today's guests expect much more. And, as Martin noted, it is in the wrong location for todays WDW Resort. Back then 90% of the resorts activities were in that area. No EPCOT yet. The LBV area (the other 10%) was just coming online.

I'd enjoy going for an afternoon, maybe after I had been to a park in the morning, I remember going to it twice but was fairly young then so memories are hazy! I enjoy the other two water parks but know that River Country clearly not up to those standards!
