So...about that big dead elephant in the room....

Well damn, THAT would of been something on a family trip with your little kids. :hilarious:

I have to say, I do sort of miss the storyline of Kilimanjaro. Nowadays its a straight forward Safari ride, which is fine I suppose, but the poacher storyline also made it feel like a tense theme park ride and tied into the conservation theme of Animal Kingdom.

Foolish for them to even consider using that prop in the first place. They just wanted to ramp up the shock factor to make us overly aware of Elephant poaching. Hit us hard. They werent thinking.
Disney was always selective about what scenes he gave us. Some things were not necessary. In Bambi we heard the shot that took down the deer but we were not shown the body. It was enough to assume that there was a deer killed and didnt need the extra shock factor. Our emotions for Bambis loss was still felt. In Old Yeller we saw the young boy approaching the penned up Yeller with his rifle, heard the shot but were not shown Old Yellers body. We knew from the grieving boy that the job was done. Some things dont need to be thrown in our face/shown to get the point across.

Ok I do agree with this. But the poacher chase sequence made the ride fun. You know, like rides are supposed to be fun.

I do see why they got rid of the elephant, but it is sad that we dont have a story in the ride anymore. The zebra in jungle cruise was killed by lions which is simply the circle of life. This elephant however was killed by poachers, human beings, which sounds probably very cruel for the kids.

Was anyone lucky enough to see the jeep chase effect when it was still working?
Yes, but my first trip to AK was during a resort guest preview the first week of April in 1998.:)

I got to witness the effect slowly degrade until it was eventually removed. On one particular trip the safari truck ran into some transmission trouble right at that location. We got to watch the poachers truck shoot at us about every 45 seconds for about 15 minutes.

I wasn't aware that the poachers shot at the riders. What kind of effects were used? Light? Air puffs embedded in the road? Or just sound?

I can remember seeing the attraction back in 1998/1999 when the poachers were in effect, but I have no memory of seeing them or their Jeep until the finale where they're already captured.

It was just sound. The jeep went by and you got the automatic rifle fire sound effect that remained after the jeep was removed.

It was connected to a metal rail on the top of a ridge, wasn't it?
Pretty much. Might as well have wrapped it in tin foil also.
The actual jeep itself or it's power source?
Yes? I have no clue what would get struck, but it would happen every few weeks then it would be down for a few days then back up for a few weeks, struck, down, up, repeat.

Little Red got struck one time and his face melted off. That was fun.

Funny the things that will happen when you don't have buildings with lightning rods every 10' along the roof line.;)

Do they run the safari vehicles in storms? I know they're fairly well insulated, what with their tires, but I can't recall ever riding them during the rain.

I am usually up for a little shock to get a point across, but murdered elephant carcasses are a little much for what WDW is all about. ...safe fun family friendly entertainment.

No carcasses. <--- two words that succinctly sum up opinion.
