So...about that big dead elephant in the room....

The ironic piece is that Disney made that movie, I think it was Earth or something like that about 6 or 7 years ago, had a scene of a gazelle being torn to shreds....
Don't worry. After enough complaints from parents I'm sure it'll be edited to where the gazelle escapes, and nothing bad will ever happen to it because it had a dream & strong spirit.

I always felt they could do a better job at the end of the safari educating patrons that wanted to learn more or help in eradicating poaching. As for the shock value to get a point across, I disagree, let kids be kids for a while. My 5 year old had questions on and off the ride which is fine, I like her learning and questioning everything, but to shock her into a feeling she wouldn't be able to process at that age would be wrong in my opinion.

Wow that is shocking. Not the lesson but the fact that the imagineers would actually go that harshly to teach a lesson. Still though, they still get the lesson across with the wounding and kidnapping. At least we get to see the rescue....

Oh wait! We don't get any of that anymore. Oh well, its still a nice view of the animals. Still I too wonder where the dead elephant wound up? An Elephant graveyard? Bwahahahaha

Thank you for posting it I was at Cast members preview week and nobody believed me about the elephant, I had started to think I had dreamt it! I think the ride is really missing the storyline now. Yes it is great to see the animals but the poacher story made the ride.

If anyone finds that graphic then I hope they never find the National Geographic channel, or Animal Planet or Discovery. Or YouTube, or any other video site that shows what really happens in the wild.....
And for gods sake stay away from war, car accidents, murder locations and the biggest of all fowl life destroyers... Kentucky Fried Chicken or Chick Fil A! :banghead: Avoid the news shows at all costs. It was a sad story, but, hardly what I would call graphic, but, then again I have a problem having direct feelings for a plastic Elephant. A real one, might have a chance at stroking my emotions, but, plastic models affect me very little.

I wonder how much input Joe Rohde had in the first (original) storyline... My bet is that it was his idea and the higher ups reeled him in a bit, but that is just supposition on my part.

Why is a dead elephant more traumatic than a "sleeping" zebra?

Because the zebra wasn't named?
Because the overall tone of the attraction wasn't jokey and campy?
Because the zebra wasn't established to be a mother?
Because the dead elephant wasn't next to a cute hungry lion cub?
Because the zebra's death wasn't framed against the uncomfortable geopolitical context of anti-poaching laws being established and enforced largely for the benefit of rich white tourists?

Just some guesses here.

I'm pretty sure the first Disneynature movie had a scene like this (or maybe it was Oceans): "If this young polar bear doesn't find food soon, he could starve." And then he died.

So how was the big red scene any different than the area at the top of the lift hill on Kali River Rapids where all the lumber poachers cut and burned the forest? Trees have feelings too!
