Disney classic will make high-definition debut in October

"Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs," the first Walt Disney animated classic and the first DVD to sell a million copies in a single day, will make its Blu-ray Disc debut Oct. 6 in a special combo pack ($39.99) that includes a DVD. A two-disc standard DVD release ($29.99) will follow the combo pack by seven weeks, arriving in stores Nov. 24.

Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment is hoping the early Blu-ray Disc release will drive consumers to the new format. The classic retelling of the Brothers Grimm fairy tale has never before been seen in high-definition.

The combo pack, according to division worldwide president Bob Chapek, will give consumers "another opportunity to maximize their viewing options. With today's technological breakthroughs found in Blu-ray, we are confident that this version of 'Snow White' will easily become the reference point for high-definition home entertainment libraries and family collections all over the world."

"Snow White" hasn't been available in any form since its first, and only, DVD release in 2001. The new release will include several all-new bonus features not included on the original 2001 edition.

Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment has announced that the upcoming Platinum Edition Blu-ray release of 'Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs', which is due to hit store shelves on October 6th, will precede the DVD release by seven weeks. Those DVD fans who don't wish to wait until November 24th will be happy to hear that the Blu-ray release will include the DVD version as well, so you get both formats in one release!

Bob Chapek, president of Disney, commented that the Blu-ray/DVD combo format would provide owners "another opportunity to maximize their viewing options. With today's technological breakthroughs found in Blu-ray, we are confident that this version of 'Snow White' will easily become the reference point for high-definition home entertainment libraries and family collections all over the world."

When initially released on DVD in 2001, 'Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs' became the first Disney animated classic to sell 1 Million copies in a single day. Hopes are high at the house of mouse that a similar record will be witnessed with this new Platnium release, except this time on the Blu-ray format.

The new release will feature several all-new bonus features that weren't included on the 2001 release.

I love that Disney is releasing the Blu Ray/DVD Combo. It's a smart move. I still have a DVD player, but will one day upgrade to blu ray, and this allows me to start a blu ray collection but still be able to watch the film without having to buy the two versions.

That is a neat idea for Disney to do this Now you may allready know this, but just in case I thought I would tell you that the Dvd included in the Blu-ray will most likely be disc 1 of the 2 disc Dvd edition of Snow White. So you may not get to watch a lot of the bonus stuff right away until you get a Blu-ray player. You might be fine with this, but just wanted to let you know :wave:

Yea, I already knew that. Usually I don't watch the bonus disc of any film right away....lol many of the movies I've had for a couple years I have not yet watched the bonus features:lol:. So not being able to watch the bonus features really doesn't bother me.

heck I still haven't watch Sleeping Beauty yet. it's been sitting on my movie shelf since I bought it.

Note: On Amazon it says that both the Bluray and Dvd are coming out on October the 6th. But as I talked about in my first post I heard that the Dvd may be coming out 7 weeks late on November 24th.

Very smart decision. Hopefully other studios will follow suit and will get this far superior format some momentum.
