Snakes

I've never seen a snake but my DH was attacked at EPCOT while sitting on a bench by a rodent or squirrel that jumped out of some bushes and ran right up his stomach and across his chest before leaping from his shoulder back out of sight.

well, OP will NEVER come to Disney now.

Anyway, I worked in the Land greenhouses for 7 months, and I never saw one. I saw a couple around the resort, but all very small and VERY scared.

Some tips to try and avoid them:

1. Request a room higher up in the building. While they can physically reach higher spots, snakes are much more common on ground floor rooms with direct access (doors and patio doors) to grassy or wet areas. If you explain your phobia and the level it is at, I am SURE the desk will do what they can to help you with this.

2. Try and walk near other people. A snake will avoid a group of people even more so than one. If you can stay on large, open walkways in highly populated areas, your chances will go down.

3. Avoid the watery areas. If you are at MK, walk on the main walkway instead of the fronteirland boardwalks. Stay away from taller, brushier areas, too. Snakes don't like the open unless they are sunning. At that point, they don't want to be disturbed, so they will usually find somewhere on a hillside away from movement. I woudl suggest avoiding the water parks. Snakes do become somewhat common there (there were two removed from TL's lazy river one day while we were there - harmless guys, but I am sure that is not really a concern of yours).

Don't let it get to you. They are really not a major happening or problem on property. THe lizards are everywhere, but if you can handle walking outside in suburban areas in the summer, you can handle anything you will likely see in WDW.

Would highly guess that was a squirrel. They have become frightfully tolerant of people, and they are INSANE animals down in Florida (and up in the midwest, too). They chase each other around all day, so your husband was likely a nice ramp to get away from another (which you may not have even seen).

I've seen snakes, yes, but they were NOTHING compared to the bugs. Walt Disney World has had the largest bugs I've ever seen in my life.

This one bug, at the Animal Kingdom, was enormous. I snapped a picture of it. Here it is:

Scary!

Actually, that is the right answer. WDW is crawling with all kinds of snakes including a high population of Eastern diamondback rattlesnakes. Where ever you see lizards, there will also be snakes. Central Florida is prime habitat for snakes.

Copperheads are also very prolific in the WDW area. Coral snakes ("red next to yellow will kill a fellow") are all over the place as well. WDW is "home" to many types of snakes including lots of Florida cottonmouth. However, it's unlikely that you'll see any.

Snakes have many ways to conceal themselves from view. Even trained herpetologists have difficulty locating snakes in the wilds of WDW. However, if you know where to look, there is a bounty of snakes to be seen at WDW within a short distance from any guest area.

Personally, now that Roy Disney is out of the picture, I've had my fill of snakes at Disney.

You are so full of it - WDW is not crawling with a high population of rattlesnakes... puhleaze...

take notice that the only snake being reported around here is a "small black snake" (which are the black rat snakes that are completely harmless)

It is true that FL has a higher population over all - but not in WDW... the only copperheads, rattlesnakes or coral snakes you are likely to see is in AK behing "thick glass" :)

Please don't let this previous report scare anyone off from WDW... what a load of bull... the whole 'if you know where to look" - just don't go looking and you will never see anything like that... good grief... it sounded as if that poster was trying to scare the OP off...

As everyone else has said - just don't go looking for snakes and you won't likely see any - and if you do - 99.999% will be a rat snake... which here again.. is NOT dangerous...

My wife and I saw a little black snake on the pathway right in front of Universe of Energy, right on our way to Mission: Space. The poor little guy's back section was smashed and he didn't look too long for this world.

Also, in Epcot- on the path that circles Imagination and leads to the World Showcase, you have to be careful not to step on a frog.

One time there were like six frogs, and my wife was on the ground trying to scoop them up and toss them off the path while yelling

"People! Can't you see there are frogs here! Don't step on them!"

My wife is scared of a lot of things, but she really wanted to save those frogs.

Strangely enough, that night outside our room at Caribbean Beach- a bunch of frogs were staring at us from the trellas. It was almost as if they were thanking her...

While we're talking about wifelife here, we saw an Armadillo wandering about at Caribbean Beach. He was really cute, like a leathery football with bad eyesight.

BTW- Did someone actually think Space Mountain had snakes? Or were they mistakenly thinking about the Blizzard Beach mountain? I can't imagine that ride having anything vaguely reptilian inside.

Those suckers are fast though... I saw a kid try to "catch" one... it was the funniest thing I'd ever seen... those guys can dig! :)

True story: as I was driving on World Drive, one of those black snake (I'd say it was about 4 ft long) was crossing the road. Too late to change lane... bamp-bump... it was the first and the last (to this date, touching wood) time I killed something on the road. sorry.

I also once saw an armadillo on the side of the road just before the entrance to Epcot. really cute.

Part of the show includes a snake in the movie... just close your eye's it's not that big (well, actually it's huge on screen) but it's only for a sec... I'm hoping that you are more worried about real snakes... not the one's in movies... ;)

No, good lord, this thread has become heartless! YOU HAVE NOTHING TO WORRY ABOUT! :) I promise you! :) You are going to have a wonderful vacation, you are not going to see any snakes and you shouldn't even think about this or visit this thread any further - it's only going to ruin your trip for you... and that is not what WDW is all about. You will have a fantastic magical time! :) Don't worry...

I saw a number of snakes at the Caribbean Beach resort, one rather large. Not surprising since the foliage is so lush there. They do their best to stay out of your way. Snakes are great. Spiders though, that's another thing...hate 'em.

SNAKES?? Eeeeeeeeek!! I am the world's BIGGEST scaredy cat when it comes to snakes!

There ARE snakes at Typhoon Lagoon! Last Spring Break I took my family to WDW with our friends. I was in the Lazy River at T.L. when EVERYONE starts SCREAMING "GET OUT OF THE WATER, GET OUT...SNAKE!!" I look over and there it is! It's swimming toward me!  By this time I am CLAWING at the pavement to get out of the Lazt River!! My best friends husband leaned down and LIFTED me out of the water. I clung to him CRYING.

I leave for WDW in 38 days... TL is on my list of places to go strangely enough!!
