Smushed penny question

We are trying to think of fun things for my 4 year old daughter to do along the way throughout the parks while we visit later in the month. Does anyone know how many different smushed penny types there are at WDW? Also, is it a 50 cents cost for the smushing? We had done this years ago and can't remember. I just want to bring the change rather than keep looking for some when we find a machine.

Hi Mike. Well, the pressed pennies (or quarters) are definitely a fun thing to do with your adorable daughter . My sister (she's 15, far from 4 :lol: ) collects them and has a little book that she got at WDW that you keep them in. She's been collecting for a while, and she still has yet to collect them all. There are always new ones to be had, and it would take a lot of time and change to get them all. I believe it does cost 50 cents to smush them, a dollar if you want the quarters. Don't know if I helped much :lol:

Oh gosh, there's several machines around the park. Most are 51 cents (fifty cents plus the penny) though there are some on Main Street which are a rip - they're like a dollar each instead. Don't know why.

The characters are in weird places. Like the Briar Patch store that has Pooh items doesn't have Pooh machines there, they were somewhere else. I went on a mini-quest one day last summer for a friend.

They also sell squished penny books with Disney covers and slots to fit them into. Think like an autograph book only for pennies.

Thanks. I think we will stay away from the more expensive ones. We just thought it would be neat for her to spot the machines on her own like a treasure hunt.

I don't really remember where my sister got it. I haven't seen them in the resort gift shops, but I'm pretty sure they're in the main stores of the parks (i.e. Emporium). There's a machine in practically every attraction's gift shop and in a lot of the big stores. Sorry I can't be more specific than that :lol:.

Don't forget to check the machines in the resorts! I know they had the books in the Mercantile in the WL... There were 2 machines there if I remember correctly... camping gear & cowboy wear, but don't hold me to that.

My 3 yr old DD loved collecting these on our last trip. We bought one of those collectible books in a gift shop in Fantasyland. I think they are in lots of places, just something you look right past after a while. We limited her to one per machine (each time she found it, meaning if she saw a machine a different day we let her get a second one). We saw machines everywhere, from Downtown Disney to the parks and even in the Polynesian.The next time we go, I think I will try to bring some very shiny pennies especially for this. We just used whatever we had at the time, and I think it would be fun to use "special" pennies that will stay shiny for a long time.

My sons love collecting pressed pennies and quarters. I always prepare a couple of rolls of quarters and a roll of shiny pennies beforehand.

The collector's books are available at most shops within the parks. The ones we have contain slots for 36 smooshed pennies and 6 smooshed quarters. Virtually all of the penny machines require two quarters and a penny. Most of the quarter machines take five quarters, but I ran into a couple that require only four quarters.

You also may want to use only pennies made prior to 1982, their composition was 95% copper and 5% zinc, just clean the ones you are going to use up before pressing them. The pennies made after 1982 are copper plated zinc and the design being pressed may crack through the plating and expose the zinc.

The Briar Patch no longer has the Pooh and friends machine? They used to have one when I worked there (back in 2002). I believe its options were Pooh, Tigger, or Piglet. It used to be back in the corner by the registers with the candy.

The dollar machines cost more because they smash quarters. There were tons of the dollar machines during the 100 years of magic celebration (like one for each land in MK, for example).

Also, I believe the little books that hold the pennies can be found in most gift shops with general WDW merchandise. Like the emporium, resort shops, etc. They used to be sold in Splash photo, but that was again when I worked there and they may not carry them anymore (I don't know, things have changed, including the layout of the store).

One question, does anyone know if a Pooh/Tigger machine exists in Epcot? And if so, where it is? I have a Tigger penny for MK, Studios, and AK. I'd love to somehow get one from Epcot (if they have them) to have a Tigger penny from all four parks. I once asked the cm at Epcot's tip board and they looked at me like I was crazy. If anyone knows, it'd be greatly appreciated.

I'm a pressed penny collector myself, although my collection is just in its beginning stages. I've got a few pennies and a quarter from Disney World, but I guess I really got into the collecting mode when I went to Cedar Point a couple summers ago. I picked up one of the collection books there. It's the same as the one mentioned above, it holds the 36 pennies and 6 quarters. Right now I've got both of my collections in the one booklet but I'll probobly pick up another one from Disney next time I head down there, which sadly won't be for atleast another year.

Also thanks alot for directing us to that link that lists all of the pennies. It's incredible how many there are and how many more I really need to get.

And I also strongly support the shiny penny theory, it really does make a world of difference.

Does anyone have any information on the make-up of Candian pennies? I want to know if I should start searching out for pre 1982 pennies as well. Thanks!

So yeah, I think you're right. I was picking them up for some friends so I was trying to find characters I knew they liked. It was fun though to do. I also picked up some from Busch Gardens in Tampa which are cool 'cause they're animals like tigers and stuff. She got a great package out of it.

Yeah, I think the Pooh Shop would be too obvious of a place. :lol: Though Briar Patch used to also be a pooh shop until sometime between early january 2003 and may 2003. Since they changed the main line of merchandise in the shop, I though maybe they'd moved the machine too.

Pennies

Sure, you'll want to get a roll of shiny new pennies for squishing.
You might want to also get a few roles for throwing into fountains and such. Kids (and their parents) get a real kick out of throwing pennies into the 'waters of WDW' (don't do this at AK, though...bad for the animals)...this is one of the cheapest thrills at WDW.

Shiny pennies really only matter in that they look pretty right out of the machine. But, if you don't have a shiny penny, and old dingy one is just as good, and you can polish it up like shiny new later with a copper polish.
The shiny pennies quickly turn into dingy pennies anyway.
And if you are really serious (crazy serious), you should collect the pre-1982 copper pennies, and shine THEM up before you go. They are harder and should be more durable, and technically more valuable.

I've been collecting them for about 2 years now and only have 1 1/2 books filled. I was trying to finish the Lilo & Stitch series but specific machines are hard to find. The quarters are really cool. Right now they have the 75 years of Mickey. I know there is on at the Poly by the pin wagon. As for others...that link should help ya.

I have always received new shiny pennies in change at WDW.

(perhaps to encourage smushing???)

We got our album at the firehouse on Main ST. They are fairly widely available, usually near the cash register, no doubt to encourage impluse buying. Last fall we paid $6 for one.
