Smuggling

Well, the time is growing near so I figured I'd ask.

In case you don't remember, I posted a while ago about engagement info at Disney and you were all very helpful.

I'll be leaving in a couple weeks and am all set to pop the question. My question is, If I want to bring the ring into the parks, is it best to keep it tucked away in my pocket to avoid it being taken out by a bag search? They won't go through my pockets would they? I would hate to have to pull that out with her standing right there?

:hammer:

All the times I have been there they have never gone threw my pockets only bags. If you dont bring a bag with you on that day you can bypass the bag check and they wont be looking at you. Good luck looking foward on hearing all about it.

pockets

No, they will not go through your pockets. Also, if you put it in your bag you'll be fine and just whisper to the guard about it and they'll play along. Most times they dont empty your bag anyways, they just look in it, and rarely is my wife attentive enough to see what's in it.

Funny story though. I got married last year and was in Charlotte, NC with my soon to be fiance at the time ( she didnt know of course) and we were leaving to fly back to Florida. I bought her diamond while we were in Charlotte. When we were at the airport I had her ring in my backpack and security wanted to pull it off and go through it (after scanning it) (just my luck). The began to empty the entire bag and my girl was standing RIGHT THERE. I pulled the oldest trick in the book. I told her I dropped something at the "shoe" station where they scanned my shoes. She went and looked and I told the security "I have a diamond in there, so please dont let her see it!". They were nice enough to play along and take everything out of the bag EXCEPT THE RING and hid it away in the bag for me and replaced everything. Can you say close call?

I'm from mass too :D

but anyway,
Oh man, I'm petrified about the airport security.
She is attentive for the most part so if they pull that out I am doomed...I don't know how I'm going to swing that one
I've usually just thrown the bag through with no problems
I just have to make sure not to have anything sharp inside the bag. Hopefully it goes over smooth, I would hate for this surprise to be ruined. This secret has been eating me alive but I can wait...when the secret is out. I want to be the one to let it out, not some airport worker..lol

Try leaving the ring loose in your pocket at all times - it won't activate any security links at the airport (you would not go through at the same time as your fiancee) and they will not search your pockets.
Good luck and let us know what happens

I don't want to leave it loose cuz I'll be to afraid of it falling out.
I would prefer to keep it in the box

Dont leave the ring in your pocket  It would sure set off the metal detectors and then they would make you take it out.... To much of a risk. Just leave the ring in the box and check it with your bags.It will be fine.I leave all kinds of stuff (digital camera camcorde ect ect) and it is always there when I arrive. Are you flying out of boston or MHT?

Flying out of boston...

I will prob just keep it in my carry on bag.
I'm way too nervous of it not being there when I get to orlando
A camera is one thing to lose, but a ring....no thanks..lol

The ring should not set off the metal detectors. Both my daughter & I wear alot of jewelry and we walk right thru. However my husband's money clip & pen set it off. Have her go thru first. When you give security your bag (both at the airport & at WDW just quietly tell them. Ask them to not say anything out loud. You should be fine. Good luck & let us know how everything turns out. (don't worry she will say yes.)

I'm sorry, but I have to disagree with this post. There is no way I would ever put an item that valuable in checked baggage. While you have been lucky, there have been a few times, both pre- and post-Sept. 11th that my checked bags have obviously been rummaged through.

If I had to choose between carrying the ring with me and maybe having to spontaneously drop on to one knee and propose at a security checkpoint vs. having the ring lost/stolen and not having anything to propose with; well, I'd carry the ring with me 6 days out of 7 and twice and Sundays.

I'm sure you'll get through security without incident, and your proposal will be magical. :sohappy:

Best of Luck!

Well its better that you are going out of boston. Just have her go threw first then you switch to a diffrent line they are about 4 to 6 of them all in the same area that way for sure you know that even if they did ask about it she would never know because she would be gathering all her stuff at her belt. Anyways good luck\

when do you leave and where you staying?????

I guess I have better faith in the americans that check my bags plus my brother working for TSA I understand what type of security (ie. cameras) the TSA workers are under. Also if they went threw your bag and didnt leave you a card in your bag saying that they did that is illegal.

another suggestion is what I do with my luggage, since I'm far from trusting the TSA. Fedex it to your hotel room to get rid of the risk of getting caught with it at the airport.

Then tell her you're expecting a work related package at the resort, in case they deliver it her, or she answers the voicemail in regards to it.

And when entering the park, just keep it in your pocket... security doesn't make people empty their pockets.

I agree with MKT that is the best way to do it. Just a tid bit more this is off of Massports website.

Avoid having on your person items that contain metal when traveling, including:
Jewelry (pins, necklaces, bracelets, rings, watches, earrings, body piercings, cuff links)
Shoes with steel tips, heels, shanks, buckles or nails
Clothing with metal buttons, snaps or studs
Metal hair barrettes or other hair decoration
Belt buckles
Under-wire brassieres
Keys, loose change, lighters
Mobile phones, pagers, and personal data assistants (PDAs)
Surgical steel implants will require a physician's note

If you are leaving Mass., put the ring (inside it's box) in the inside pocket of your jacket. Pass the jacket through the baggage check and it should be fine.

YEAH! FedEx it, get insurance, get tracking #, etc, etc. If you're staying in a Disney Resort, call ahead, and explain it to them. I'm SURE they'll play along and just hold it without making a scene, or leaving a voice mail, etc - if you request.
