Smoking in MK is a no-no

I thought I would share my story here..and I still feel a little bad about it.

So, during my trip to WDW last month, we had just entered MK… and of course my brain is going thru full sensory overload after walking down Main Street…. So we got past that….and we were walking past the Hall of Presidents…so I decided to light a cigarette….No Kids were around…and it was not that crowded. I did Not know there was a “no smoking except in designated areas” rule in the parks. This was my first trip to WDW in 10 years…. And ignorance on my part. So the caffeine was starting to kick in…and I was smoking my Cig and basking in all of MK’s glory, sights, sounds and smells…just taking it all in. Then a really Nice CM comes up to me and says: “ Excuse me sir…there is no smoking policy in the parks…except in designated areas .” I apologized profusely and told him I did not know.

I thought I had broke some major WDW Law…and I would be takin to the WDW dungeon and be flogged by Donald Duck…. I did not want to throw my cigarette on the ground and desecrate the MK….(oh great, smoking and littering…that has to be death) So I was scurrying around looking for an ashtray…I finally found one….but I just felt bad.. I figured I was “outside” and there would be no harm in my smoking. I don’t even smoke in my own house. But rules are rules…and I hate smoking around kids…but there was no one around us. Anyway…The guilt bothered me…LOL….there I feel better now.

i once lit up on the boat in it's a small world. geez, the way people reacted, you'd think i just took minnie mouse's virtue by force.

honestly, i was in wdw in '98 when smoking was still allowed outside the designated areas. i was always careful to keep away from kids, including my own.

when i went back this past summer, i noticed that there was a policy change and avoided making a goof like you just laid out, dmc. however, i would expect it would take a much worse transgression to make a guy who takes his nickname from delorean feel guilty.

anyway, most smokers, who have been hammered on these boards in the past, are fairly responsible. we're used to being relegated far, far away from those who choose to hide their addictions from the public eye.

i think it's worth remembering that walt was a smoker. didja see his office at the walt exhibit? there were something like a dozen ashtrays in there. ah, those were the days....

Disney and Delorean ...thats the stuff I am into....Quite the combo eh? As far as the guilt thing goes...strict Catholic upbringing... LOL

...but why, in the designated areas, do they have those freaky ashtray-things that make it almost impossible to put out the cigarette? They are like...parking meters with teeny little holes or something. I haven't had a visit to MK yet where one of them isnt spewing smoke all by itself. No wonder people get mad, both smokers and non-smokers.

I wish they would just have pails of sand.

Yes Walt was a smoker, but I don't think he would let people smoke in his park.

I would ban cigarettes in WDW if I ran the world, just like they ban gum.

And whats up with the smoking in the restaraunts in Florida, that has to go.

All my friends smoke....and EVERY time we go to WDW...they light up wherever they want (usually while in transit from one ride to the next)...and yet has a CM stopped and said something about it. We go pretty much 3+ times a week...so I guess we are just REALLY lucky. Those designated smokers spots are truely nasty (even for smokers), youd think they'd get something BETTER then a glorified mailbox to dispose ciggarettes into.

I personally respect the no smoking rule (easy for me...being a non smoker and all), and would have no problem if it was enforced with more authority.:fork: The last thing I want to see are innocent little kids inhaling a toxin against their own will.

Funny enough tho that the MOST smoking I see in "non designated areas" are actually on the TTA (it being mostly outdoors)...where they claim "We are watching you"....again...so far..no CM has caught on.

lance, it's not a question of what anyone thinks. the fact is that when walt was alive, smoking was allowed anywhere at disneyland. alcohol was another story.

i suspect -- and perhaps this is what you were driving at -- that if walt were alive today, he would embrace the current policy on smoking being restricted to designated areas. the only difference is that we'd probably get better ashtrays.

Agreed the "Designated smoking" areas are really nasty...shortly after I was scolded we went and rode Pirates of the Caribbean. The smoking area by Pirates was a rather nasty area...I don’t know...maybe they just forgot to clean out the ashtray in that area that day...but there was alot of rubbish around there too…

Just my two cents.
