Since other people are bringing up their experience smoking or living with smokers, I'll fess up that
a: I'm the youngest of 5 in my family
b: I saw my dad waste away to nearly nothing and die from his addiction to cigarettes. He was 45, 5 months, 6 days. I had just turned 11 about 2 weeks prior, and Christmas was about 2 weeks away. And even having grown up and been married, the depression I deal with that time of the year is profound and consuming. I still don't give a crap about my birthday, I'd rather have to work then think about it. And when the anniversary of his passing comes I'm just worthless as a functioning human being. Christmas I have to actively work to make it good for the wife and kids, and sometimes I fail.
c: It bothers me to no end that 2 of my siblings smoke, a lot.
d: One time I had a compulsion to figure out exactly what day it would be when I would be older than he was the day he died and that day was one of my hardest as an adult.
e: I used to be much more militantly anti-smoking when I was younger. I recognize the pain of addiction a little better now and I understand the freedom to do what you want to do, so I'm not such a jerk about it. I still wouldn't date a smoker when I was single. I didn't like hanging out with people who were smoking. I wouldn't buy cigarettes for anyone who asked. I did not shed a tear when bars and restaurants went non-smoking. I will not shed a tear when Disney parks go smoke free.

When is your next trip? We leave in 8 weeks from tomorrow. It will be interesting.

We leave tonight, so we won't get to see it in action until August or September. We were planning on going at the end of August and I'm pretty sure we'll be sticking with that.

Or that's just the number of smokers who actually admit to smoking on reports and don't withhold the truth for their health insurance premiums...

I'm not a smoker, just saying I wouldn't trust those numbers as 100% accurate
Yeh, my sister in law is a prim schoolteacher, my other sister in law is a 'decor specialist'. I'm an outright, "I smoke, I'm going to walk outside" graphic artist.
My BIL has this grand smoking pavilion at the edge of his yard, with a ton of land around it. It's a masterpiece.
I stroll out to the smoking pavilion and see two shadows skulking next to the house- with the red cherry glow of smokes in their hands.
I go over and get the "Don't tell anybody!" from the both of them. "Be grown women and use the pavilion. That's why it's there."
and now I'm telling you- my sister in laws smoke.

How Disney enforces it will likely depend on behavior. If individuals make it an issue or get combative I would imagine Disney will create procedures to elevate their response. If I was a smoker that would be my biggest concern, soon as a few bad experiences happen then you can bet they will crack down hard. They are not going to roll back. Rolling back would be terrible PR for Disney.

And I'd be happy with that. I like my spaces FAR AWAY. The local amusement park by me used to have the smoke sections literally on the walkway, or in the middle of the thoroughfare. No, thank you.
Now they are alcoved away, you walk a bit to get there. That's what I like.
May I ask one serious question. If smokers don't mind walking to some secluded section in the back of the park then why is there so much hate about walking outside the gates to use the section out there. If its not at opening, the gates don't get that backed up to where it would be a problem. Just wondering, what would be the difference between walking all the way to the back of the park instead of all the way to the front of the park?

I love the change, as I hate the smell of smoke (vaping too) and I really hate smelling it in WDW. But like MagicFeather said, it's going to be difficult to enforce.

I live at UCF, which is a massive smoke-free campus. It's great, because the vast majority of students and faculty comply with these rules, keeping the air of the campus clean. Even still, you'll notice someone vaping in plain sight every few days.

UCF is far less dense than WDW in terms of attendance, and I can't imagine our security is anywhere near as attentive as WDW security, but people are still people and they still want to smoke.

We'll see. I wouldn't be surprised if this went the way of an average middle/high school and had people smoking in the bathrooms trying not to get caught (which is a terrible idea).

Vape smoke doesn't have a scent. If you do smell something, you're probably smelling the other type of vape designed to make the happiest place on Earth a little happier, if you catch my drift.

I don't think this is going to solve much and will make the entrances even more hectic.

However WDW resides in Florida and thus would be impacted by current FL laws on smoking in public places.

As I've stated several times, I applaud Disney's attempt to curb smoking in their parks. I just think this new policy isn't the best way to do it.

Nor do I think it's Disney's attempt to head off issues with legalized recreational pot. That is several years down the road.
well, they literally just made smokeable medical cannabis in florida legal.. a few days before this came out. It does seem pretty close to not have something to do with it. It was only available in other forms until a week ago..Before you ask how many people have medical cannabis in florida 150,000+ https://www.tampabay.com/florida-po...l-marijuana-use-in-florida-continues-to-grow/

But I'm just talking about me and my preferences. I like to back away from the world a bit, that's all. I did that as a kid.
I don't mind that the smoking sections have people in them, but it's the crowds I back away from, just for a few minutes, I guess so I don't get overwhelmed by it all.
I don't think the direction of the walking would be any different, at least for me.
My husband and I looked over the map of the parks, and in light of the new rules, thought, "this is doable, this is not a dealbreaker."-
but I perused different posts, and realized it was a very crowded place to be, so now I'm having second thoughts. It's not the 'no smoking' rule that got me scared, it was the crowding.

Yes it does, at least most do. Your tongue can distinguish only 5 basic tastes, everything else is done by your nose which is why everything tastes bland when you have a cold (nasal congestion limits smell)

If you have a flavor to your vape it smells, and most vapes have flavor because nicotine by itself is very bitter I’ve been told.

Here we go again (this was discussed). Rather than second hand knowledge or just guessing, let me summarize.

Vape juice is largely PG/VG, which is also found in asthma inhalers. It may or may not contain nicotine of varying strengths (it tastes peppery, it doesn't smell peppery). It may or may not contain a flavor; most do, some do not. Those that contain a flavor are largely fruit, desserts or candy but can also be tobacco (unburnt). Those that don't (e.g. Halo Sub-Zero) contains nothing but menthol. You won't be smelling this.

And even if you do smell the others... What, are we objecting to the smell of strawberries, custard pies and Twizzlers now too? I might have a word with Main St. Bakery. 🤔

Because they smell weird and I also don’t want to inhale nicotine and nicotine is the reason that vapes exist. Also polyethylene glycol isn’t exactly 100% non toxic either, and I don’t know what other chemicals are in their. Tobacco companies (who make a majority of vapes) believe listing the ingredients to be a trade secret, as you mentioned some vapes have caused popcorn lung, who knows what else is in them. Until they actually start listing all the ingredients, I’m not going to want to inhale the stuff as tobacco companies have lost the benefit of doubt in my mind.

That's a whole lot of misinformation. Yes, tobacco companies are behind most of the gas station vapes (e.g. Blu)... But no self-respecting vaper uses those. They prefer their own electronics of varying makes (mostly from China, honestly) and juices - that are made largely by small businesses around the country.

There's little nicotine in straight vape juice and even less in exhaled vapor. That's being a bit paranoid. As for the rest, the jury is still largely out on that. Is it better than cigarette smoke? You betcha - about 99% better. Is it healthy? No, multi-vitamins are healthy. Vaping is about harm reduction and kicking the habit.

Then there are those that vape non-nicotine stuff just for the sake of "chuckin' clouds." 🤷‍♂️

A Very good point. It depends on what "outside the park" means. Does "outside the park" literally mean "past ticketing"? Or does it mean "past Security"?

Past ticketing (MB scanners) - not so bad. People can exit & re-enter multiple times per day.
Past Security? Well, people will still exit & re-enter multiple times per day. Think "airport". The increased load on Security is a bad idea :(.

Just past the MB scanners, INSIDE Security, will, in my opinion, result in far LESS "sneaking", a lower load on the bag check CMs, and higher compliance.
