small world make over

Yeah that's over at Disneyland and it's an absolute shame. I don't know why they felt they had to include animated characters into a classic ride. What's next the Carosell of Stitch?

There has been a fair amount of discussion, and pictures of the character "dolls" have been posted.

Guess the argument is the same as we have here with any other change, that was summarized in the article you referenced:

Whenever Disney changes a popular ride, they say, the company receives criticism from die-hard fans who are resistant to anything that will alter the Disneyland of their childhood memories. So-called "Dis-nerds" also got upset when Disney recently refurbished the classic Pirates of the Caribbean attraction, but were mollified once they saw the updated ride.

Designers insist the changes to "Small World" are even more subtle and conform to Walt Disney's original philosophy and style while keeping the attraction from becoming "like a museum," said Kim Irvine, director of concept design for Walt Disney Imagineering.

While my initial reaction is not positive, I won't loose any sleep over it.

There are some pretty funny quotes in there. Things like "Dis-nerd" and "young marketing wizzes," but this one is my favorite:

Oh, anything Disney does is always exciting. It's always something fun, and they never do anything halfway.

Didn't they do this at another Disney park last year? When is it suppose to be done? I'm going to DL for the first time this summer and wouldn't mind seeing it like this but am glad its not happening at WDW (yet).

Although it isn't my favorite idea, if done tastefully and in the original small world style, I don't see how it impinges on the integrity of the ride.

After all, isn't it Walt that claimed that things at WDW should constantly be changing?

Just as I didn't mind the PoTC additions, this won't bother me greatly. How can Disney characters in doll form adding their voices be too offensive. Maybe a scene of them gathered at WDW at the end of the ride?

Not sure how they would put the characters around, but I think one tableau would be enough to get the message across.

Marty's letter appeased some fans? Emphasis on the some, I guess. I thought most of the agrieved fans felt it to be standoffish and condescending, and were anything but appeased.

I kind of like it too. I understand the opponents, but I do think for young kids it will increase their enjoyment of the ride when they see characters they recognize.

Alright, I was completely against this and now I am officialy 60/40. I think a sweatshirtmom would hug me if she found that out.

Let me explain,

I am AGAINST Disney's interpretation of Disneyland not being a museum, always changing, as well as small world not being relevant to children and the other mumbo jumbo they pull out of Kim Irvine's touch screen infested .

HOWEVER my little blue birds....after reviewing images and AP video of the ride I have come to this conclusion...

first we must go back 30,000 years to see the dawn of this refurb

look what they have accomplished during the refurb both before and after the 2008 holiday overlay.....refreshed sets...many more since late december have gotten more glitter, more paint, new lightining, enhanced sound with musical instruments in native lands to help fill in the gaps while going through the obivous small world warehouse.

The return of the 1964 world's fair golden sun (even though it is a near replica)

new costumes, fixed dolls, the rainforest and papa new errr I can't spell it but they have been saved, though I think we should start a campaign for disney to move the rainforest back to the brazil section where it originally was...as there is still a vacant spot there where it should be.

When it's a small world premeiered at the fair...the USA was the host country, and I respect Walt for not doing an American seen when the ride when to Disneyland

however the new american scene is just part of the voyage around the world....we go past south america into latin america and swing out over the south pacific down to australia and back to north america...if anything we end over the east coast of the USA and the finale room is sort of the UNICEF/United Nations room. :o

The American scene involves the west, the native americans, and other subtle themes, maybe a hint at cosmopolitan america, but nothing over the top like the HK and Paris versions.

The characters themselves....there are less of them than the HK version, and they do look more in the style and blend in more.

The thing I am against the most is the use of movie songs over the small world song.

If we just had the normal soundtrack...then guests may or may not notice characters....and it could be anyone's version of the ride....originally or new or a bit of both.

However the movie music obviously queues people to look for characters and that makes me 60% meh and 40% yay.

The Los Angeles Times now has video up of the new Disney/Pixar dolls.

They look cute. Actually, they look really cute. Much better than I imagined they would look! Here's the LA Times article with the video right at the top.

Personally, I'm looking more forward to the new light tricks the building will do when the Disneyland Railroad passes in front of Small World at night. The tests they've been doing with that look really cool!

After watching the video from the link in the above post, I have to say I'm OK with it. I'm surprised I'm OK with it, but I am.
The style is right on and it's just enough that it doesn't detract from the rest of the characters in the ride.
In reading about it in advance, I was cringing just before seeing the video.

The changes were obviously very carefully thought out.
Quick hijack...
Not the case with the Tiki Room UNM:eek:, or even the current version of CoP, even though I'm probably the biggest Jean Shepherd fan on this board.
The CoP with Jean doesn't sync up like the previous incarnations, and Shep's reading is lame. It's not one of his better works and between the mediocre reading and lack of sync, it leaves a bad impression, especially for first timers.
I'll still sit front and center of CoP multiple times, but I don't blame newbies for only doing it once.

Back to your regularly scheduled thread...

I think the new modifications of IASM will keep people coming back.
...but I still don't want WDW's to go that way. Keep the differences.

I've seen some pictures and I have to say that Cinderella, Aladdin, and Pinocchio wouldn't jump out as being actual Disney characters.

I think well done for the dolls. Not sure how the audio would be.

I kinda like it. I mean, it's not like they've plastered them all over the place, making it really obvious that they're there. If anything, I doubt many of us would even notice them right away if we weren't actively looking for them and the sad part is, if kids today are anything like I was as a kid in WDW, then most of the rides that don't have recognizable characters are probably boring them. I know the only rides without recognizable characters I liked when I was six was Small World, Jungle Cruise, and Journey into Imagination (Yes, it has characters but not characters I knew before coming to the park) This feels like a game of Where's Waldo to me more than anything else.
(Hee Hee, Dis-nerds. I'm gonna have to remember that one)
