Small New Addition to Haunted Mansion (Spoiler!)

As long as The Hatbox Ghost remains a non-speaking character in the ride I can probably put up with whatever happens in the movie. It sounds like the character is pure CGI and not Jared Leto in prosthetics or anything. I don't expect they'll be adding Leto's voice to the ride - in fact, I don't get the impression Disney expects this new movie to perform well. It was supposed to come out next month and last fall they moved its release to August, but even then we've seen next to nothing from it despite its starry and expensive cast. You'd think they'd be shouting from the rooftops if they thought it was gonna make bank.

Point being we probably won't be seeing a Johnny Depp/POTC-style refurb here.
A trusted friend of mine saw a test screening for the movie. His words were that it was probably the worst movie he's seen in a test screening, other than The Dark Tower.

If true, that really sucks for Disney. They really need a good Haunted Mansion movie to kick the synergy machine into high gear.

Could you imagine if this was somehow WORSE than the first Haunted Mansion movie??

Hopefully them pushing back the release by 5 months is a sign that they're listening to the feedback they got and are working to make it better. What a total shame it would be for this to be another stinker.

The push to later this year was to compete less and give it a family Halloween season release to have legs after it's initial opening.

Disenchanted had extensive reshoots after audience testing and it still wasn't enough to completely salvage it.

I think Disney at a fundamental level doesn't really understand why people like The Haunted Mansion ride...they just know they do. It's why so many attempts to capitalize or encourage further enthusiasm (like ride changes and cross brand synergy) fall flat.

I think the financial disappointment of Crimson Peak will ensure he never gets to make another haunted house movie.
My understanding of the issue with GDT's Haunted Mansion was more about his star rising significantly in the last few years - he won Best Picture and Best Director at the Oscars a few years back, and Disney didn't feel that level of pedigree (or the amount of cash it would require) was necessary to make a Haunted Mansion movie.

Well that says a lot regarding what Disney thinks of Haunted Mansion and its fanbase.

In fairness, Disney doesn't hire Academy Award Winning Directors for most of its projects. Even their biggest properties and franchises don't usually get that level of prestige talent involved behind the scenes.

It's not so far-fetched for them to think The Haunted Mansion a little too niche for quite that level of investment. The ride is going to make them money whether or not the new movie is a hit, they can afford to take the risk. Shame though that is to us.

He also couldn't quite crack the script in a manner he was happy with, so Disney moved on.

In other news we may have to take up Bat Watch - according to the Doombuggies Facebook Page the Bat was not in the attraction yesterday:

Part of me wonders if they maybe tried moving the cage to a different spot in the ride - that would seem more logical than it disappearing after only 2 days of even being known about. But I haven't seen any reports of it being seen elsewhere, so maybe something's afoot.

Keep your eyes peeled on future rides!
