I know they stopped running the skycoasters a few years back at the Magic Kingdom. After some time they even took out the towers as well. I thought I remember hearing that someone died on the ride? Does anyone know anything about the rides closure? I liked the skycoaster, it was one of my favorite rides (if you can call it that). It always had long lines when I used to ride it.

they should really do something with the building in Tomorrowland it looks so ugly there!!! But the Skyway station in Fanstasyland actually looks good there!!! But I thought they closed it b/c it was not hadicap accessable!!?? But I did hear a rumor that a worker was killed on it or something!! But there are too many rumors!

I heard that the Skyway in Cali had an accident. Some guy fell, then tried to sue. But he didnt win.

Although I miss the attraction, I have a positive view of this. They closed that, the stage in Tommorowland, and if they got around to closing CoP, they would have a big area of land for some grand new ride.

SKYWAY GONE
Both skyways are gone. I dont know the exact date but i was at WDW in Oct 93 and the attraction was shutdown and the cars and cable was gone the towers were sitting empty.
Both of the rumors could have contrubited to the shut down but I dont think it was the only reason. One I heard was the emergency stop saftey feature went off when it was too windy.
I live in chicago and we have Six Flaggs Great America Back in the 70 and 80s Being called originally Marriotts Great america (to copy Disney) had a simular problem.
They had a skyway ride with Two seperate sets of cables . anyway when it gets windy in chicago they skyway would set off the emergency stop and the cars would stop. So the fire dept for gurnee(the town its located in) would have to come with the ladder to rescue every one. and that was a pain. a friend got stuck ontime and it took two hours to get to him.
So the saftestop could have been the biggest reason and maybe because it had poor maintainence over the years that it was in disrepair.

It's true that a man was killed when working on the ride, but Disney claim the reasons for closure were not to do with that. The following information is from here, which also has details on the closure of Disneyland's Skyway.
In February 1999, a park custodian at Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom was killed when the skyway started up expectedly while he was cleaning one of its platforms. Raymond Barlow, 65, was sweeping off a narrow skyway platform inaccessible to park guests an hour after the park's 9:00 A.M. opening when other cast members, unaware of his presence, started up the ride. Barlow, startled by the approaching gondola, grabbed onto it and tried to climb inside; he fell 40 feet into a flower bed, hitting a tree on the way down, and died. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration later ruled that the area in which Barlow had been working violated federal safety codes and fined Walt Disney World $4,500 for a "serious" violation of safety standards. Several months later, in November 1999, the Magic Kingdom's skyway was also permanently closed. Once again, the decision to close the attraction was based on factors other than its being involved in a recent accidental death.

Way back in 1976 when Marriot opened Great America, it revolutionized the theme park industry. It was one of the first theme parks to let you ride the attractions WITHOUT having coupons or tickets for each individual one. The entry fee was all that you would pay. And the entertainment that Marriot brought in back then was top notch. I remember seeing Sonny and Cher and even The Who. The park was built with the intention of lengthening the stay of guests at the brand new 5-star Marriot Lincolnshire Resort and Golf Course, and for the first few years, such things as Early Entry and Late Night Stays were tacked on to Marriot guests visits. The food was all prepared by Sous Chefs and again reflected Marriot's goals of being the best. The Skyway, SkyWhirl and there was a third cable attraction which didn't last more than a year. Six Flags bought Great America from Marriot when Marriot could no longer afford to run the operation to its high service level at a profit. It's a shame what SF did to GA, but now it is one of the coaster kingdoms of the world, second only to Cedar Point. There are 8 roller coasters at SFGA, and 3 of them are actually nationally known and 2 of them are even Woodies.
