Sick/Injured While At WDW

I've had a cold more times than I can remember. One year ago, my wife had a stomach bug and we spent a couple of days in the room. It was horrible, always is.

Does anyone else ever get overly paranoid? Like when I drive down, the air in my car makes my throat scratchy and then I'm worried I'm catching a cold. Or if I eat something that doesn't totally 100% agree with me I'm worried I have a stomach bug. :)

As I am currently in a nasty battle with the cold virus, I got to thinking that it would probably be my luck if I got a cold the day before my next trip to WDW. Has anyone had to deal with being sick or hurt while at WDW, and how were you able to deal with it and still have a good visit?
I just got back and was sick the last full day of our vacation. I got that nasty cold that won't go away. I did go to EPCOT and walked around. My wife shopped (her favorite thing) while I sat outside and people watched. We did call it a day a little early and went to bed around 7:00. I am still sick and that was two weeks ago. I really haven't enjoyed my vacation. You know thinking about the great time you had.

I've been a sick a few times in Disney - never fun. This past trip I had a vertigo episode when I was packing the car for the trip - I looked under the car seat for some cd's. If anyone else suffers from positional vertigo, you'll know what I mean when I saw that an episode is awful! I had to do a maneuver at home to get it to stop, and had residual dizziness for the first half of our trip. Even riding the monorail made me feel sick, so rides were out until I felt better. We met a lot of characters the first few days, so that helped. And just watching my little ones take it all in made me happy, no matter what. Had to make the best of it. :)

A few years ago we were at WDW for Christmas and New Year and someone somewhere passed a really nasty flu bug onto me. When it took hold, all I could do was stay in bed for a day and sleep while I waited for it to peak, losing a large slice of our visit in the process. I was so wiped out, I actually fell asleep in Soarin' and my wife and to all but carry me back to the room. The next day, I managed to find whatever counter meds the shop was selling and managed to drag myself to the parks and tried to make the best of the time available. But I was feeling *really* unwell, streaming nose, pounding head absolutely no energy whatsoever...but I did manage to drag myself around the parks - probably passing my bugs around in the process. The only time the symptoms were easing off was at the airport on the way home.

Twice this has happened and it sucks.

First night in a room at OKW and woke up the next morning with something in my eye. We went to MK and tried to make it through the parade taping stage shows, but I just couldn't. Went to First Aid and they looked in my eye and there was a piece of glass in my cornea. I had to get transport to a medical center to have the glass removed which took the entire remaining day. I ended up wearing a patch over my eye for the remainder of my trip. It was tough with only one eye. I was getting bumped into and pushed because of restricted vision. I also was getting motion sick on occasion. Not a fun time. Then I lost most of the last day of our trip to do a follow-up with the doctor and have the patch removed. The entire trip for me was a waste me. When I went to tell the manager of OKW that a shard of glass was removed from my eye that came from the bed in my sleep, she said nothing and handed me a business card with Disney legal department. She said cannot help me, but to call legal and walked away. I never called legal, because I am not that kind of person. I would have liked Disney to help get me back and forth to the doctor since I did not have a car. I really was disappointed.

Also one year got a stomach virus that shut me down for 2 full days. I have never had a stomach anything that has put me on a toilet seat permanently for 2 days. It was bad! I could not leave the room.

My boyfriend and I were fighting colds and allergies while at WDW...2 years in a row! We just took it slow. I remember being at HS, trying to fight off not feeling well, but had to give in. We went back to the resort and hung out, watched tv. The same happened to him a year later. It wasn't an ideal vacation, but we still had fun and it's actually one of our favorite memories of our vacation: being sick and sniffly, making repeated trips to the resort store for meds, and watching (ironically) Harry Potter films on the TV in our room.

I pulled my tendon on the second day of my visit and had to spend the next 3 days in a wheelchair then two days on crutches. Not exactly fun but still saw and did what I wanted to.

NYE '07, DS, age 12 woke up with a fever. We dosed him with aspirin, waiting a couple of hours and got into Epcot at 11:30 a.m.. Wall to wall people, just walked around the entire time, no rides. Then when we made the mad dash out of the park when the fireworks finished, my DH got chest pains. At first, he was thinking he was just out of shape, or had indigestion, but when the pains continued the next day, he popped a nitroglycerin pill, and the pains stopped. That was our last day, but every time he got pain, he took the nitro and the pain stopped. So the very next day, January 2nd, we just drove straight home to CT and on the 3rd we got home and he ended up having angioplasty.

Last summer I got food poisoning from a BBQ burger from Planet Hollywood. Haven't been able to stomach BBQ sauce since.
My parents were both ill the following night and reckoned it was delayed reaction to the same Planet Hollywood meal.
Luckily it only lasted a few hours for each of us and it also happened on planned rest days.

For a few years I would catch a cold just about every time I flew. That made for several sickly WDW visits. I particularly remember one time when I had a great rate at the Contemporary, and was staying in a tower room overlooking the MK. And of course I got major sick (cold or flu). I had no energy, and spent a couple days in the room, just getting room service and standing by the window whimpering out at all the people who were having fun. Yeah, it SUCKS to be so sick that your hotel room is preferable to even slowly walking through a park!

We've gotten food poisoning from the airplane food a number of years ago before airlines started charging you for food. That was not fun since the day it hit we were supposed to go to Cirque du Soleil but were too sick to go. The next day we were doing an all day tour so we stuck to bland foods for breakfast and lunch and managed to make it through the day.

My mom had the flu on our trip in November 2014 but she soldiered on even though she wasn't feeling 100%.

New Year's Eve trip 2013, the first full day of our trip it absolutely poured rain for a bit in the afternoon/early evening leaving the ground wet with puddles. I was being really careful to watch my step as I as walking since I had on a pair of flip flops. I was crossing the bridge from Liberty Square to the Castle Forecourt area when I just went down, my right foot having slipped out from underneath me suddenly. At first I thought I had just kinda stung my ankle and split the cuticle on my big toe since even though my ankle hurt, I could still walk on it without too much issue. We headed off to first aid to get a bandaid before heading to dinner at the Plaza. While we were eating my ankle started throbbing. I thought I just needed to walk it off since we went to dinner about 5 minutes after I fell. We headed off to the PeopleMover and my ankle just started hurting worse while we were riding. I knew then that I had done more than sting it. I hobbled over to First Aid again and got an Ace Bandage for my ankle. Once my ankle was wrapped it felt tons better and I just continued on hobbling around the park. I spent the next 3 days hobbling around the park with my ankle wrapped. The rest of my foot/leg swelled but my ankle felt better.

While at Hollywood Studios once, I started to feel a cold coming on. I was getting congested, runny nose, cough, etc. I made a stop at the first-aid station and they provided some over-the-counter medication. I expected I would have to pay some outrageous amount, but it was complimentary. It was an unexpected, pleasant surprise.

BTW.. The first-aid station also has saline and re-wetting drops for dry contact lenses.

I'll be darned if a cold or even flu-like cold will keep me from going. Now, I have never gone to WDW sick as dog, but I have gone on other trips dragging badly with a 100 degree temp.

I know, I know, selfish move. ...but that is a lot of money to lose so.. yea... my lame excuse.

Bad case of flu. Had projectile vomiting and diarrhea most of my visit. I probably infected hundreds if not thousands of people. But nothing going to ruin my special day.

Last year , we were at Epcot one day. It was hot that day and I just didn't feel good. After eating at Via Napoli, I went back to the hotel with my Mom.

Last month, on the third day of our stay at Art of Animation, I managed to develop a kidney stone. I would recommend against anyone else doing that while at WDW. :)

The pain was so intense that I ended up vomiting from it. I knew I was going to have to go to the hospital, but we were clueless about health care facilities near Disney. My wife called the front desk to ask about local facilities, but they insisted on sending the Reedy Creek paramedics instead. So... I also got my first ever trip in an ambulance. And felt rather stupid about the whole thing.

I was taken to Celebration Health and had a CAT scan to verify the kidney stone, and then I was pumped full of morphine which finally got the pain under control. They sent me back with prescription pain medicine, and for most of the day, I felt fine. We actually went to Epcot and kept our ADR at Garden Grill. By bedtime, though, the pain was back full force and the prescription wasn't touching it. I actually ended up taking a taxi back to the ER to get checked again. They adjusted the meds, and then I was able to keep it under control.

The good news, though, is that our stay was long enough -- 9 nights -- that we had plenty of time left to readjust our plans and still do most everything we wanted. And I did manage to pass the stone a day or two later.

One other thing: I can't say enough good things about the staff at Art of Animation. They were fantastic. They checked with my wife and our kids to see if there was anything they could do to help while I was at the hospital. They paid for the taxi for my return trip. One of the actual, on-site managers (not the call center) called me periodically to see if I was okay. They even offered to add an additional day of park tickets to our package if it would help make up for lost time. I know we talk a lot about the demise of customer service at Disney, but these folks definitely understood the magic.

I got pink eye after a week at WDW last month. We went to centra care and got the drops and got on with it. I a 22 hour flight home the next day so it was kind of horrible but I'm not surprised its a common illness with all the glasses you wear on rides and germs that must get around those parks.
