Should we upgrade from QSDP to DDP?

Hello

We are a family of 6, me and my hubbie, our 2 kids aged 5 and 7, and my mum and sister.
We are booked in for 14 nights at Port Orleans French Quarter with 14 day Disney passes. We chose to stay on site for ease- none of us want to drive, my sister is in a wheelchair so better for closer proximity to parks, and we wanted the full Disney Experience- we've never stayed on the resort before.

We have got a free Quick Service dining plan with our booking, but I'm looking into upgrading us to the Disney Dining Plan- just over £1000 for 14 nights. Plus then gratuities on top.

We definitely want to do some character meals and would love a special meal as we will be celebrating Mums 70th birthday while are are there.

Also I just feel mum won't want to eat Fast a Food every night- I know there's a lot of variety, but my mum appreciates a sit down dinner, with plates and cutlery....

Are we best off upgrading? I doubt we will regularly leave the Disney site (have no idea how easy that is with 6 people including a wheelchair)

Please offer your opinions- they would be gratefully appreciated xxxxx

Welcome aboard. YES!!!!!!!!!! In your case the upgrade is well worth it. It will pay for itself in about 4 to 7 meals. Check out the dining reviews, find where you want to eat and you can do a nice sit down every day. Leaving property with 6 one in a wheel chair is not worth the bother unless you're driving

I would suggest you spend some time looking at the table service restaurants menus and try to figure out if you want that many sit down meals, Then try and plan what you would eat at each and work out if it cost effective to upgrade.

Also staying at port Orleans you can get a boat to disney springs that has a lot of great quick service restaurants . We have 14 table service credits each year with DDP and often we want to cancel or amend reservations as we may be tired or still full from lunch as most meals table or quick service a large portions.

We use standard DDP as its included for free with our stay at old key west resort and would not pay to upgrade if only qiuck service was offered.

Do as much research as you can and work out if the extra £1000 would be better spent on souvenirs and a few nice meals or upgrading the plan.

I suggest you run the numbers, and by that I mean lay out where you would eat and see if its cheaper to pay out of pocket or by way of the meal plan.

With children, justifying the meal plan is easier, my kids (now 12) long stopped qualifying for the kid meal plan and so paying full adult prices for them made no sense.

I used the following sites to help discern if its worth it. They're not perfect, but it gets you in the ball park to see if its feasible or not.

I've used this spreadsheet but the last time I looked, it hadn't been updated in a long time.

I absolutely would - we have for our trip this October, and the half-price upgrade is so worth it when you calculate how much you'd actually spend on food over 14 nights. I did the same last time I went in 2015.

I would say yes! I am a big proponent of the DP if you know how to utilize it fully.

If you plan on doing a lot of table service meals as well as character breakfasts and dinners and a couple of signature restaurants it is totally worth it and you will save. But be forewarned, it's usually only worth it if you eat a lot. So if you get desserts and drink usually with your meals the DP tends to be worth it since those are included (1 dessert and 1 drink per person per TS meal).

Another factor is what you order on the menus. If you are getting the cheapest thing on the menus, then I don't think the DP saves you anything unless you are doing a lot of characters meals and signature dining, which it sounds like you might be doing, so it may still be totally worth it. But if you tend to get the nice steaks or entrees that are $35-$75, the DP is hands down a win-win and saves you money.

Also, don't forget to use your snacks! It's wasted money if you don't. You can use your snack credits for some of the Food & Wine kiosks, too. And if you don't use your QS meals, you can always use 1 QS meal and get 3 snacks instead as long as it is in the same transaction. I do that sometimes since I don't eat a QS meal sometimes if I have a really big TS meal. If you end up having leftover snacks towards the end of your trip or the last day, you can always buy a ton of treats like candy or cookies and stuff to take home or for the flight home or to give to people as gifts when you get back home, too. I always do that.

The regular DDP is $75 a day per adult - my advice is for you to look at menus on Disney's site and add up what you may eat in a day. If it adds up to equal or more than $75, then the DP is worth getting and a value for you.

For children, it's definitely worth it since they are only $25 per day. 1 character meal and a couple of snacks would cost that much alone.

Thanks so much for your advice. I will take a look at the calculators but I think we will most likely do it. Really appreciate it! And cannot wait to go and sample all the amazing food!!!!

Even if you didn't upgrade, I'd think 4 days of nothing but counter service food will become a bit tedious and you'd start trying to book sit down restaurants. The difference in price for 4 adults in 2 kids over the course of 14 nights seems quite reasonable, it's less than 12 pounds/16 dollars per person per night.

I'm sure you'll get tons of advice about how best to use your credits. Here are some of the most basic suggestions

Breakfast is usually cheaper to buy out of pocket than lunch, and lunch is cheaper than dinner, so it's best whenever possible to use your table service credits for dinner, counter service for lunch, and either pay out of pocket for an inexpensive counter service breakfast, or perhaps snack credits.

If either of your kids want to see princesses, it takes 2 credits for each person to get a meal insider Cinderella's castle...but only 1 credit per person at Akershus in the Norway pavilion at Epcot.

Some meals might include special seating for events - examples include eating at Tusker House in Animal Kingdom (a character meal, only 1 credit) could include special seating at the Rivers of Light show at the end of that night. Or going to hollywood and Vine (character meal) or Mama Melrose's in Hollywood Studios might get you a pass to see Fantasmic. It's like getting an extra fastpass. BTW both of those parks include nicer restaurants that offer the same seating option, but they use 2 credits (Tiffins at AK, Brown Derby in DHS).

Many of the counter service meals are still HUGE. You might find 2 people can split one, which will allow you extra counter service credits on other days where you might need them, including your checkout day, since you get meals for each NIGHT of your stay, but the meal credits on your account are valid until the end of your checkout day. It also might come in handy if you do decide to do a Signature restaurant that requires 2 credits for each person.

To that end, many side items in counter service restaurants can be had for a snack credit. So if you're splitting a counter service meal between 2 people, getting a side item on a snack credit can stretch it further. Probably one of the most extreme examples - Flame Tree BBQ, for one counter service credit, you can get a sampler platter that includes chicken, ribs and pulled pork ($19), and for a snack credit, you can get French Fries topped with pulled pork and cheese ($6.79), and that would probably be enough for 3 people to share.

Some people do the same thing for snacks, get a huge cinnamon bun, probably as big as one of your children's heads, two people can nosh on that easily. Or a giant ice cream-cookie sandwich at the Plaza, just one snack credit but I usually split one with one of my daughters.

If anyone in your family is a coffee drinker, pretty much every drink, of every size, at every Starbucks on property is a snack credit.

Everyone in your party staying in the same room need to be on the dining plan...but not everyone needs to use the dining plan at the same time. If there's a meal where one person or more isn't very hungry, then as long as it's not a buffet/all-you-care-to-eat/prix fixe meal, they can just have an appetizer, or something so inexpensive that it's worth paying out of pocket. Depending on the management of any given restaurant, they might even let an adult order off the kids menu and pay out of pocket. That saves you a credit for later.

If your family is big on popcorn, there are souvenir buckets you can buy (out of pocket) that are refillable for your length of stay and each refill is significantly cheaper than buying a whole new disposable bag/box of popcorn. You wouldn't be able to use your snack credits on the souvenir bucket, and it wouldn't be a good use of your snack credit to use it towards refilling the bucket. But getting the bucket affords you an inexpensive snack out of pocket so you can use your snack credits on other more substantive snacks later.

If one adult member of your family is not big on alcohol, management is usually OK if that person orders a beer or wine and gifts it to someone else at the table who IS big on alcohol. This might mean you have to buy a soft drink for that adult out of pocket, but you'll still make out a little better having received an adult beverage that would cost more out of pocket than a coke.

I'm sure other people will have better examples if you choose to get the plan. But in your case, I think it's worth it.

When we stayed at Caribbean Beach, we got free QSDP and upgraded to DDP. Got the free DDP when we stayed at Contemporary. Both times we booked lots of character meals, meals before park opening and the Fantasmic dining package. Totally worth it. We met so many characters with no waiting in lines. We didn't need to buy another meal outwith the QS, TS and snack, in fact we struggled to use all the QS meals. Make sure to book at your 180 day mark so you get the reservations you want, some places book up really fast. Agree with the tip to keep track of snack credits, there are some amazing snacks to try, we made a list of our must tries. Snacking round the world in Epcot is fun.

Wow thanks for that slappy magoo! That is super helpful. Will deffo be looking into all those options. My tummy is rumbling already!
My pleasure. Incidentally, you dont need to be specific with your dates, but if you're going in the autumn during the epcot food and wine festival you will definitely make excellent use of the snack credits as many of the items can be had with one.
