I am bringing this up because I read on another Disney site over an 2 hours ago that over 1,000 selfie sticks were confiscated at the Magic Kingdom already today on Christmas eve:banghead:.

I think Disney needs to go a step further with selfie sticks since guests since having over a 1,000 self stick confiscated in a day shows guests aren't getting the message about selfie sticks aren't allowed in the park. It is one thing if the selfie stick rules were recently in place, but they already have been in place for 6 months.

1000 selfie sticks caught. Must mean there are a lot of Brazilians at the park now. It's there summer vacation now and they probably still haven't gotten the memo.

I saw them in universal on nov 2nd and even with the selfie stick ban they were whipping them out of their packs

Please don't start my Brazilian touristfrustrations...

I'm aware most of them don't do anything weird or whatever. But this past nov. my cc fluked at Target so I had to get cash. My stuff was held at a cashiers register. When I returned a family of I don't know how many.... had sh*tloads of stuff that they still had to sort out at the cashier and then pay for every one or two-4 items SEPARATELY with cash. "Was this yours? No it was mine. Oh wait no it was Maria's" They were a freakin family and they couldn't sort this out after one or perhaps two paid for the whole bunch with their receipt? I nearly gave up on my stuff after (checked! 25 minutes waiting for them to finish up. I should have hurried them up with my Selfiestick :arghh:

There. Out of my system. I feel so much better now :angelic:

When I was there last week, I had someone try to use one right before our car blasted off at RnRC in DHS. CM came up, pointed out that selfie sticks are banned and they could see what he was trying to do via security camera and that the ride was being held for launch until he put it away (which he did with much complaining that someone at the park entrance told him it was fine to bring it in). When our ride was over there were a couple CMs waiting to confiscate the stick and give him another lecture.

While I love this story (and I do) I am curious re: the question at hand- do you think they needed harsher punishment, or did they handle it correctly?

Under the circumstances I think they did right. If anything I would have had him surrender it when he was caught rather than having him stow it for the ride and approaching him afterwards to confiscate it, but I understand them wanting to not delay the rest of us who were strapped in already or the rides behind it.

Early Dec. we were on Main Street and a couple of knot heads had their self-centered-stick out in the middle of the street trying to get a shot of themselves with the castle (two feet from a Photopass guy) and two "plainclothes" CM came from out of nowhere and moved them off to the side and gave them a talking to, a claim slip and took the stick. (golf clap! yeah!)

Just got back after 10 days in the parks, and I saw only 1 selfie stick. And that was after new year's eve Illuminations, with a guy walking around taking video of the crowds, not himself. Literally, I saw tens of thousands of people with cameras, and only one. That's amazing.

By comparison, I travelled to Europe for a total of 6 weeks in the last 2 years, and selfie sticks were everywhere there. I think Disney is doing a great job on the selfie stick ban.

I have to agree with that, especially the proliferation of them in Europe. They are literally everywhere!

I think a simple "excuse me sir/maam, selfie sticks are not allowed at WDW Parks/properties, please do not use it/leave it in your car/room". How long it has been a rule has nothing to do with it. With the exception of forum goers, the average guest wont know unless they see it on Disney's website or are told by whomever books their trip. I know that my friends do not frequent the website at all, unless they are price surfing for a future visit. Thus, even if 5 years has gone by, it wont matter - they will have to continually address the matter on a case by case basis. With beefed up security - that offers a good chance to let people know as well as when they purchase park passes and physically enter the park. Just as the majority do not read the manual to their TV or car, most dont read or watch all the material WD sends out. They should sell them on eBay and use it for charity, or to fix the Yeti. ;)

I don't think they really want to do anything about it too much. While not selfie stick related, we were on Star Tours a few years ago and a woman took a picture. The ride stopped, they got on the PA and advised the person to stop, and the ride continued. She then did it again. This time the CMs came in and told her to stop. They restarted the show but allowed her to stay. So, you've already warned them and caught them, to me it seems that they aren't willing to punish.

What is a self stick?
Is it when someone carries a fat head of themselves as a stick figure?
Is it the male private parts?

LOL Sorry...had to make a joke about the typo.

If Disney doesn't do a good job at confiscating them at the entrance or whatever they do...shame on them, not on the guest.
Enforcement of the rules is Disney's job.

This is a sweeping generalization and I have no problem condoning it, but if you own a "selfie" stick and use it to take pictures you represent a lot of what is wrong in our world. For starters, a selfie stick is a statement that says you do not want to even bother asking a random person to take your picture for you (remember when we actually took the time to be social for one second with one another)

Meh, selfie sticks were quite low on my list of undesireable behaviour. Except when they bring them on coasters...
Maybe Disney thought they'd loose out on some Memory Maker cash if folks were Selfy-ing all over the place????
In terms of punishment, I like the store back in your car idea or throw away. Thinking of the hike to the TTC then to your car would make me want to toss that stick.

Or perhaps you cant trust the thieving barsteward not to off the minute you hand over your property. Though if you had a selfie stick you could twat them on the head with it.

They need to do a lifetime ban for the first offense. Then word would get out and it wouldn't be a problem anymore. Trouble is a selfie stick can be purchased for less than 10 dollars so simply taking it away doesn't really do anything. If I was a narcissistic fool I would risk 10 dollars so I could photograph myself... but I wouldn't risk being banned for life.
