Short photo trip report from Devon

Our main holiday this year is in WDW in October, so over the long summer holidays, DH and I decided to try a rent a cheap caravan for a week. Our DDs aged 10 and 6 had never been in a caravan before and were very excited. We booked a caravan in Seaton, Devon. As it was last minute, all the 'nice' caravans were booked, so we had one of the older ones. I asked if they were non-smoking, but unfortunately not. Warning bells should have started ringing then!

We set off on the Saturday, expecting long queues, but apart from a few short hold-ups we got there fine, in about 3 hours.

All ready to go!

The caravan was OK, a little old and shabby, but with a strong smell of smoke. We opened the windows and sprayed some air freshener, but there was not much else we could do.

Sunday: We took the girls to the Donkey Sanctuary in Sidmouth. No photos today sorry. We then went to Budleigh Salterton and walked along the beach, and bought the best ice-creams we have ever had. DDs had vanilla and chocolate, I had banoffee, and DH had 2 scoops, turkish delight and honeycomb. Wow - they were fantastic!

Monday: We went to a hedgehog hospital, where we saw hedgehogs (obviously!), donkeys, ponies, and lots of other farm animals. It was a very small place, but the girls had a great time.

On the way back to the caravan, we stopped at Exmouth beach, where the girls had lots of fun in the sand.

We then called back to Budleigh Salterton for more of those ice-creams, but they were shut.:(

On Tuesday we took the girls on the Seaton tramway. The trams run between Seaton and Colyton, which is a really pretty old-fashioned village.

Once we got to Colyton, there was a horse drawn waggon to take us to the village, so we rode that. (Can't believe I didn't get a photo of the waggon!)

On Wednesday, we went to Cricket St Thomas. This is a wildlife park, but we were a little disappointed as many of the enclosures were empty. The grounds were beautiful though. We left at around 2 as we had seen everything.

After we left, we drove back to Colyton and had a Devonshire Cream tea - homemade scones, clotted cream and blackberry jam - it was wonderful. We need to diet next week!

Thursday, we drove to Branscombe, a small beach near Sidmouth, where the ship, the Napoli, was stranded earlier this year. The girls had fun on the beach, and we later drove to Sidmouth for another cream tea, and some more fun on the beach. There was a sandy beach in Sidmouth instead of pebbles, so we had lots of fun paddling and splashing in the sea.

Even more ice-cream!

Friday was our last full day, as we had to leave the caravan by 10 on Saturday. When we woke up, the weather had changed. It was much colder and there were grey clouds, so we decided to pack up early and go home. We were not very comfortable in the caravan, and the pull of comfortable beds and a nice big bath at home was very strong!

We packed up quickly, and then drove to Beer for lunch. Beer is a pretty village by the sea, I would really recommend a visit, if anyone is in the area.

The hedgehogs are so cute! I know my son would love them. (as would I) I think I've been too spoiled by Florida beaches; I like softer sand - and warmer water. ;)

We didn't realise that the beaches in the area were pebble beaches. The funny thing is, we live near some of the most beautiful beaches in the UK, and they are sandy - yet we go away to Devon to find pebbles! Should have stayed home!
