Shoe Question

I always wear tennis shoes to the parks. I have bad knees (started early in life) and they always bother me while at the parks. My question is, what type of shoes do you wear and why? Do you think a different type of shoe might help my knees not be so sore? I don't wear tennis shoes much at home as I have to wear heels and flats to work. My knees have been bothering me for the last week or so already and I'm not sure what to do for our trip this weekend. I'm bringing my knee brace and advil, but I was thinking maybe changing up my shoes might help. What do you think?

I too have bad knees, can you say multiple orthroscopic surgeries. I always wear my crocs Vezzy flip flops and have never had a problem. That being said have you looked into getting orthodics for your sneakers. Good Luck

What ever is comfortable at home.

+1 -- you wear whatever you are most comfortable wearing at home when you do any amount of walking -- and if they aren't comfortable there they certainly will not be comfortable at WDW. We have a LOT of threads on shoes/flip flops/crocs at WDW so a search will bring up hundreds of opinions for you on their favorite footwear. Personally, I alternate between flip flops one day and tennis shoes the next day etc...but I also wear flip flops from March to November at home, so they certainly don't cause blisters...I would never wear them at WDW if I didn't already wear them every day at home.

Always sneakers..not sure how people wear flip flops, I love my flip flops, but there is so much walking I'm sure I would get blisters!
Agreed. A well broken in pair. Don't bring a new pair, bring that broken in pair, because you will blister from all the walking.

Crocs. They are the only shoes my family bring to WDW. I was a convert after the first time I wore them to Disney. No aching back or knees, no sore feet. I'm not a fan of flip flops for the park but I'm considering letting the kids wear their Crocs. By the way, there are a lot of cute styles, please don't listen to people who tell you how ugly they are. While they still carry the original style I just bought a pair that look like vented boat shoes. I have over 10 pairs and they are all super comfy. Since we are going later this year I will be looking to get some new Crocs for everyone in my family for various reasons. Online has the most selection.

I have no help here. All I can say is that every trip, my feet are sore and hurt but the trip in september - it was out of control bad!!!! I mean - I nearly destroyed my feet for good! I am going to be more mindful of it in the future and will be going to a proper walking/shoe store to get some new coverage for the old tootsies. I am hoping this will help me in Feb.

If by "tennis shoes" you mean floppy canvas sneakers, I'd upgrade to a well-cushioned athletic walking or running shoe. (I prefer running sneakers because they tend to have better flexibility and more padding, while walking shoes are often less flexible, offering more support but less cushioning.) My biggest issue tends to be sore feet (not sore knees), and I find that alternating my footwear between sneakers and sturdy hiking sandals alleviates that. I wear socks and sneakers during the morning when we're moving fast and far, and change to sandals for evenings, when our pace is more relaxed.

Talk to your orthopedist or podiatrist and see what he/she recommends for you.

^This. My knees are pretty banged up from years of being a catcher on my softball team. I wear well, broken-in running shoes -- not worn out -- and hiking sandals. No problems with my knees.

I also use Body Glide on my feet to help prevent any blisters. Just in case. So far, it's worked great.

Zappos has a newsletter to which you can subscribe (I have been getting it for years). People ask questions and other people answer. What I have seen over and over is that people with screwed up knees (including surgeries or replacements) love MBT shoes (NOT the knock-off versions like Sketchers).

They are especially good for people who really pronate (ankles roll inward). They make you walk with a far more neutral step. BUT for WDW, you would have had to already have them for awhile. You have to build up to wearing them all day. Also, if you drag your feet when you walk, you will have to stop or you will trip yourself up a lot.

I have worn these and I have other negative heel shoes (such as earth brand). i think they really do help, but you would have to determine for yourself. Definitely the MBTs helped my mom. She has had both knees replaced. When you walk behind her, you can see how badly her ankles and knees collapse inward. The MBTs stop that.

They are pricey, but for a lot of people (me included), I think they are great.

Not sure if they are for you, but I like to throw the info out there!

I always wear my flip flops.. don't even bring a different shoe.. try RAINBOW flip flops... they are leather or hemp depending on what you want.. but they mold to you foot perfectly.. break them in a couple of months before your trip and your golden.. ive never experienced a blister in my 8yrs of Disney trips in my rainbows

oh and they will literally last you 10 plus years.. they are amazing

Athetic shoes are really the way to go. I've tried my trusty Toms multiple times but they give me shin splints and even boots for MVMCP if it's cool enough, but really sneakers are the best bet. flip flops are the worst idea ever!!! don't know how people do it.
