Some people don't realize that while they can see out of a window, others can see IN. I used to work in Times Square, and the buidling across the street was a well known hotel. Once I was having a staff meeting (my back was to the window) and one of my workers' eyes got huge and her jaw practically dropped to the floor. I turned around and there was a man just out of the shower, toweling off his hair while looking down onto the street below. He had no idea that all the people in the office building across the street could see him. That would happen quite often, actually.

Of course, there were other people who DID know that people in the offices could see them and would put on shows.

I am sure Disney has the same effect on people when they look out the sliding glass doors forgetting their state of undress....
This reminds me of my honeymoon.... We were staying on a high floor at the Bellagio in Las Vegas, pool view. I was acting out a mishmash of the banging glass church scene from The Graduate and the "shark, shark" scene from Jaws. I was naked. I thought no one could see and I was doing it a loooong time.
Next day we're out by the pool and see the maid in our room, clear as day.
Hmmmmmm, at least it was a pre-kids figure the whole pool could have seen!

Sorry the title of this thread didn't stick out when I was looking to see if this was already posted...

Am I the only one trying to figure out why the 6 year old girl was on the balcony alone? Dad was in the shower, heard mom scream... where was mom? I dunno maybe the news story I read was missing information but grrrrr come on parents. Balcony + Childlike Wonder + Animals = Watch your kids.

I don't think you can blame the parents without more details. You can't watch your kid 24/7.

Hope she's okay.

No I agree with that but every story I'm seeing is the mom wasn't out there with her. You can't watch your kid 24/7 but I sure as hell don't let my 7-year old out on a 3rd story balcony by himself. :D

I've been accused of being an over-protective parent myself. My wife and I get nervous letting the kids sit up front at Turtle Talk. I nearly had a heart attack at Akershus when the princess processional returned without our children. (Note: Do not trust a mermaid to watch your kids for a walk around a restaurant!) I'ts hard for me to imagine that something like this would ever happen to my kids.

Having said that, people are too quick to judge other people's parenting. Having not been there, I'm not going to judge. From what little we know, the accident could have been avoided. But I won't shame the parents who I am sure are suffering.

People feel "safe" at Disney. More than they should. They make stupid decisions. This sounds like one of those cases.

Agreed on all counts... definitely not trying to pass judgement on a situation I'm not part of or privy to all information on. Just, as a mom of a child about the same age, my very first thought was "why the heck was she out on a balacony without an adult?" and it's because I know my son... and I know that if a giraffe (or any other shiny object) was close to said balcony (which to a 7 year old could be a mile) he'd be reaching out to try to touch it and for that reason, I would never let him out on a balcony alone. I get sick when I read stories like this where it looks, at first glance, like tragedy could've been avoided. I do not however tend to automatically blame a parent in each situation (i.e. I didn't in that horrible cruise ship accident last year where a little boy drown). Just in this case, again, felt like it could've been avoided by a watchful eye. ;)

Agreed. We have an 8-year-old and a 4-year-old and it's hard for me to imagine either one would ever end up on a balcony by themselves. But it only takes a few seconds.

No more than any other place with balconies. Railing height, distance between balusters, etc are all strictly regulated by the building code.

I remember in 2000 we were pretty worried about our son, who was about 18 months old, on our balcony in the Poly. His head could fit between the railings, therefore his whole body could. We were just very careful.

We had quite a show one evening while dining at the Pink Pearl on the waterfront in Toronto. Guess people didn't realize that their balconies were not really private.

They specifically state that there are cameras on the building and that you should close your drapes for privacy. I took them at their word.

This is unique to the AKL. I never got one of those notices elsewhere. Just in case people are now worrying that all their room activities are filmed at WDW! :)

This is 100% correct. There are cameras watching the balconies to ensure the safety of both the guest and animals and it is a security feature unique to animal kingdom lodge.

I used to be an animal kingdom lodge CM. =)

So....is there a bootleg DVD, "Disney's Doing the Wild Thing at Animal Kingdom Lodge" floating around somewhere????
