I think Shrek 2 is holding its own. Only 10 million behind HP, and it opened 2 weeks prior.

Box Officw Results 6/13/04
1 (1) Harry Potter .............. $35.1 million

2 (*) The Chronicles of Riddick . $24.6 million

3 (2) Shrek 2 .... $24.0 million

4 (*) The Stepford Wives ........ $22.2 million

5 (*) Garfield: The Movie ....... $21.7 million

6 (3) The Day After Tomorrow .... $14.6 million

TOTALS TO DATE 6/13/04

Shrek 2 .... $354.0 million

Compared to:
339,714,367 Finding Nemo (2003)
176,387,405 Ice Age (2002)
267,652,016 Shrek (2001)

I think its come to the point where any movie that is a CGI animated film will make a boat load of money.

The future of both 2d animation and animated MUSICALS doesn't look pretty.

I really enjoyed Shrek 2 (Shrek 3 is officially in the works), however, it disturbs me that kids growing up now will probably never watch traditional animated films ever again.

Who knows, I have never heard of it, but it could do ok, but I have not seen any advertizements or even previews of it at the beginning of other movies.

You've NEVER heard of Chris Van Allsburg??????? He's like the Rod Serling for elementary school kids.:D

I also think Mongo was a play off the Mongo character in Blazing Saddles - a GREAT MOVIE!!

Let's see, what will I be taking my kids to this Summer. . .

Already saw Shrek 2 - Loved it.

Will probably take then to see Around the World in 80 days.

After that, I'll wait and see.

*edit to add Garfield, The Thunderbirds, and Princess Bride 2

You are right, it doesn't. I think if a studio can produce a film with traditional animation or a musical that is to the caliber of the classic Disney films, it should do alright, but since no studio has done that in the last many years, as of now it looks dead.

I don't think that all CGI animated films will be blockbusters either. If studios start producing CGI films that are as bad or worse than some of the traditional films that have come out...well, I guess we will cross that bridge when it happens.

I think the Spongebob movie coming out this November is traditional, although Spongebob already has a following, the film could be a barometer on how this style of film can still fare.
