Shark Tale

I was just watching Entertainment Tonight and they just showed a preview for "Shark Tale". It's a CGI movie, and is obviously trying to be the next "Nemo". The animation is horrible compared to Nemo. I'll see if I can try to find a link to some screenshots.

The story of the movie is that the fish are living all great and happy, and then the sharks come to attack. But, the main fish goes to a vegitarian shark (voiced by Jack Black) to get help.

Wait til you see some pictures...Nemo will be the first thing to pop into your head.

I don't think it looks too bad. I also don't think it is trying to one-up Nemo, it looks like an entirely different type of film than Nemo was.

I would not write it off so fast. It has a lot of star power with the voices, and it should appeal to the general public.

Okay, about to make myself really vulnerable with this revelation about myself, but I have a SERIOUS phobia when it comes to sharks. I can't even watch nature shows or read an article about sharks with pics in it. And I had a very hard time trying to stomach the scenes with the sharks in it in Nemo. So there's no way in heck I'm going to see this!! But I agree that it does look kinda like Nemo, but maybe a different neighborhood in the ocean. The font design of the title screams copycat though.

Dreamworks is gunna be releaseing a bunch of flops soon actually..shrek2 being the first (they dont have faith in it either..pushing it up so that it opens no where NEAR harry potter3)

Shark tale got delayed by almost a year because they knew they'd lose to pixar..and its going ot get buried under the hype of "the incredibles"

I would not count out Shrek 2 so fast. It is going to have one of the largest premiers of any movie in the number of movie screens it is being shown on. Also, not releasing the movie at the same time as another movie that is aimed towards the same audience is good business sense.

Also, I know this is a board full of Disney fans, but I don't see why so many ppl are so quick to discount competitors films.

I liked Shrek, I will see Shrek 2. I don't think that Dreamworks films are better than Disney films, but I also don't think that the recent Disney films (not including the Pixar films) are the greatest either.....

I will make 2 predictions.

1. Shrek 2 will earn at least $100 million by the end of this weekend.
2. Shrek 2 will be reviewed better than "Home on the Range"

I totally agree.....Home on the Range was TERRIBLE.....SHREK 2 looks way better and i will see it...........
Shark Tale looks like a decent movie....way better then HotR....plus it started production BEFORE NEMO...so its not a copy

Dreamworks learned this lesson already and I won't be one bit surprised if they learn it again. Star power voices NEVER equals a successful film. Need I remind anyone of their Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas flop from last year that had huge star power voices like Brad Pitt, Catherine-Zeta Jones and Michelle Pfiffer?

I must say Sharktale looks incredibly dumb and the characters are almost scary with their human-esqe hands. Even if it started conceptual strory-telling before Nemo, the general public will easily look upon it as a poor Nemo copycat and I think it will flop because it because of the comparions..."its isn't Nemo". Not to mention all of the reported story problems this film has had since day 1.

Shrek 2 on the other hand should be huge and I would bet pretty big that it will NOT flop. I actually fear that it could surpass Lion King for second best animated film of all time and even get its ogre hands around Nemo for the top animated crown....but I don't think a lot of "experts" think that. The reviews thus far have been sensational for Shrek 2 (see www.rottentomatoes.com ) and should prove to the first huge movie of the summer after mediocre opening weekends for Van Helsing (another relative "flop" for Universal in the same league as last year's Hulk for them) and Troy.

Shrek 2 is going to do good its first week..and then go downhill.

The amount of money being pumped into promotions etc as well as the fact it has 4 trailers...kinda shows they wanna hype this thing up as fast as possible so that people rush to see it, because once word of mouth gets out..its going to start dwindling.

Sinbad was also a 2D film (well, most of it was), and those have not been doing so well as of late.

2D films to be a top 10 grossing film of the year since 1999
Tarzan $171 mil 1999

3D Films to be a top 10 grossing film of the year since 1999
Finding Nemo $340 mil 2003
Shrek $268 mil 2001
Monsters Inc $256 mil 2001
Toy Story 2 $246 mil 1999
Ice Age $171 mil 2002

I think above all, Ice Age proves that right now ppl want to see 3D animated films, they don't care how bad they are, or how crappy the animation is.

I do not and will not buy into the whole 2D vs 3D argument at all....its the story that matters, not the medium and the 3D films of late have been much better story-telling pieces than the 2D films. I enormously disagree with Dreamworks and Disney who have abondened that "art" form for the very superficial reasoning of 3D being the style that people "want". Lilo and Stitch even went "retro" with their animation style with going back to watercolors and that didn't keep people from flocking to the theaters for a domestic total of 146 million. Sinbad flopped for no other reason than it was another failed attempt to create an animated movie geared for teens and young boys. Not even star power could save that ship from sinking and I wouldn't be a bit surprised to see it again with SharkTale. For some reason, Dreamworks has this fond idea that if they get big name actors to voice their characters that people will flock to their animated movies....the fact is this is NOT true....most people could care less who voices a character in an animated film, yet Dreamworks continues to market their animated films this way....

Excluding "Titanic" and "My Big Fat Greek Wedding", this is kind of the way all movies fare.

Untrue..especailly this year so far. Most movies have been having good runs for about 3-4 weeks (passion, man on fire, kill bill, mean girls etc)...

What?

Mean Girls earned 1/2 it's gross to date the opening weekend, and has been out for 3 weeks.

Kill Bill earned 25 of its 60 million opened weekend, and has been out for 5 weeks

Man on Fire grossed 22.7 mil opening weekend, only 15.0 mil the second weekend (which is not a bad drop actually) 8.2 mil the third weekend and 5.2 mil last weekend.

The Passion did well, as it had a lot of publicity around it, both good and bad, but still weekend 2 only grossed around 50 mil, compared to the 150 in the first week, by week 3, it was down to 30 mil, week 4, it was surpassed by "Dawn of the Dead" and only grossed 19 mil.

Titanic was successful for so many weeks because it was so long, it could not be shown as many times as other films. I don't know if you remember, but Titanic did not have a great opening weekend take, I think it was around 30 mil, and critics thought that it was a bust (a good bust, but a bust no less)...the following 3 weeks, it grossed more than the first weekend. Then, it continued around to 20-30 million mark all the way until Oscar time....the movie was release in mid-december 1997, and was still grossing big in mid-march.

My Big fat... had a similar situation. It was an independant film, and was not widely distributed, but since it got great word of mouth, when it finally came to a town, the masses flocked to it.
