Long-timers know I'm rarely about the shilling, and this is something that does not benefit me personally so much as a good friend of mine, a former Ringling clown, standup comic, writer and raconteur who, a few years ago, did a little investigating into the current state of one of his favorite tv icons and learned that "Captain Kangaroo" was considered an abandoned trademark. After a lot of paperwork and some legal challenges, he now controls the trademark for "The New Captain Kangaroo" for at least the next 10 years. He's working on a self-financed pilot and hoping to get some interest in any one of the approximately eleventy-seven hundred network and cable channels currently pumping product to our eyeballs. Meanwhile, on the Facebook page for "The New Captain Kangaroo," he's compiling stuff he thinks you and your family might find neat-o. Call me a law-breaker...I don't FB. But as a child I recall that I looooved watching Captain Kangaroo! I'd love to see this come full circle! My kids are too young to appreciate it in the sense that I did but it'd be fun if it could be formatted to offer something for kids of all ages. Next up: Romper Room 2.0!
