Sentinel: "MGM" will remain, not Pixar

The rumor that will not die has just been dealt another blow.

In the print edition of the Orlando Sentinel (I can't find the online version), Disney denies that the entire MGM theme park is being re-named "Disney-Pixar Studios".

However, Disney did confirm that the area around Toy Story Mania will be called "Disney-Pixar Studios", as suggested by recent county permit applications.

This actually makes alot of sense. The more brands you get on the shelf, the more customers you will attract. I wonder if we will someday see a "Lucasfilms" section too?

Thanks, good find--this would seem to be absolutely true then, especially given the permits we recently saw.

I think this decision makes loads more sense than re-naming the entire park...I will be thrilled to be able to visit an area themed after the Pixar Studios (it's a great idea) but it would just be wrong to call the whole park "Pixar", especially when you've got half the place meticulously themed like old Hollywood.

That doesn't mean the MGM name isn't leaving, just means the whole studio will not be named Disney-Pixar. Personally I'm leaning towards them just calling the whole thing The Disney Studios like they've been doing in media for a while.

I wonder if they will move the Toy Story Pizza Planet Arcade and the two Pixar Character Meet & Greets (Monsters Inc. and Al's Toy Barn) to the "Disney-Pixar Studios" area?

Thats because they can't use MGM outside of the US. If they could, they'd use Disney-MGM.

As for the story, Lee has said they will probably rename the park, so I dunno about the Sent.

This article doesn't really mean all that much. Disney does not openly discuss that which has not been announced (and, perhaps in this case, a final decision has not even been made). They had to confirm the Disney-Pixar Studios bit b/c they have filed for that name change, and Disney knows nowadays that the moment they file, Merf knows and 20 minutes later, everyone knows. I find it funny that the Sentinel tries to debunk rumors from fansites around WDW, though (inbetween complaining about WDW problems). Is there no real news in Orlando that we need a story about how much Pixar we will see at the Studios? lol

It was implied to me that the park was being renamed. Though...it does kinda make sense to just do that one area....if they are planning on adding more Pixar around there. Mania isn't enough for that.

This seems more believable than changing the name of the park. I hope this proves true.

is there room for the Cars Coaster there? There would be if the Backlot Tour were removed....:lookaroun

or One Man's Dream...both are expendable, but between the two, I do prefer One Man's Dream.

They could probably move One Man's Dream to another park. I'd prefer they not ditch that. I think it would fit at either Epcot or even the Kingdom.

I hope they don't rename the entire park Disney-Pixar. I hate that. If/when they do lose the MGM portion, I can see them just keeping it Disney Studios Park, or something like that. It would be less confusing for everyone.

If the area does become "all Pixar" than what happens to the Narnia walk-through? Arent they planning on keeping it through all of the movies they are making of it? It sure wouldn't fit anymore.

I could also see them doing away with the Backlot Tour in a few years and putting in more Pixar attractions. Wouldn't surprise me at all. I'm also surprised they haven't ditched the Honey I Shrunk the Kids playground for a Pixar themed one (I figured they'd do Bugs Life or something).

I guess we all know how reliable the media can be but the article I read sure makes it seem like the MGM name will be around for a long time.
"There has been a lot of speculation for years that the Disney-MGM Studios theme park could change its name, but Disney says that won't be happening anytime soon."

I agree with you I would like it to just be called the Disney studios. Break it up inside if you want and theme each area with a different name. But just leave it as the disney studios.

I wonder if Disney actually is cognizant of this "Merf" individual who constantly digs up information about modifications to the parks. I can just see a meeting at WDI: "Do we really want to file for this yet? I mean, I think it's a little too early to let Merf into the loop on this one."

Merf, you best be careful, pretty soon they'll try to get you to sign a NDA! :lookaroun

One Man's Dream should never, ever be touched!:fork:

As far as the thread goes...I personally hope the name is changed to Disney Studios if anything. I love Pixar and I think Disney Pixar Studios has a nice ring to it, but it just wouldn't "feel" right to me.

Yep. The Backlot Tour area will make a fantastic expansion spot.
I put up a photo of the area.
The red is the Backlot Tour. Pull that out and you have a very nice area for Pixar to move into, and to justify the name Disney-Pixar Studios.
In fact, if they wanted even more room, they could use the blue area as well. Change "Honey I Shrunk the Kids" into "Bug's Life" and there you have it.

That is a large area they could use for development, but my hunch is that if they are going to rename Mickey Ave. to Disney-Pixar Studios, they will need all of the attractions in that area to have some Pixar connection. I know the Disney half of that name justifies attractions that aren't Pixar, but I'm not sure how they would explain that. I could easily see this turning into a land system like Animal Kingdom and MK, with Pixar Studios one area, Lucas Films another, and MGM/Hollywood another area. But if they did that, it wouldn't make sense to retain the MGM in the park name either, would it?

Also, I think this new rumor, whether true or not, is a firm reminder that we shouldn't count our chickens before they hatch. Countless forum members considered this change a foregone conclusion, and until we have official word, or see visible construction, we should assume nothing is final.
