Selfie sticks - is this a thing at WDW yet? Disney clarifies policy

I've had people walk into me because they were on the phone. Guess we should ban all cell phone usage in the parks too. They could've hit me in the face!!!

Being a bit over-dramatic it seems. I believe that even you can understand the difference of someone walking into you because they arent looking where they are going, and someone whacking you in the face with a metal pole.

Who's over-dramatic? Everyone here is demanding they ban these sticks like they are the downfall of society. Most people on here mention barely even seeing them. It seems to me that you're being over-dramatic about a problem that isn't even a problem. Are you made of glass? I'm sure you'll survive being tapped by a tiny little gopro camera on a thin stick.

Now you're just being obtuse. The whole this and that can hurt someone too argument is all relative to the environment around it.

Exactly. So if you're going to ban selfie-sticks you need to ban anything that's the same length because the WDW isn't changing.

Its actually something I see quite often at the parks, and its only becoming worse. There are other problems I see that are annoying but I never call for them to be banned (such as people holding up tablets to take pics on rides or during fireworks, blocking everybody elses view with no regards to those behind them), but in the case it could create injury.

Made of glass? no. But it wasn't a tap either. It actually did hurt and had it hit my eye, it could have easily become a bigger issue. I guess in your eyes, someone will have to get a serious injury and sue Disney in order for it to get banned.

Others may have different issues, but the stick is an extension of an arm and if people reach out over the edge of a ride vehicle with it, they are breaking the so often repeated "Hands, arms, feet and legs" inside the ride vehicle at all times. What happens when someone reaches out on say Big Thunder or Space Mountain, the dumb stick hits an obstacle and then deflects rearward to the rider behind's head or face?

Jumping in late on this thread...

I hate the selfie sticks. I'll give you 2 recent examples as to why:

Splash Mountain. The couple in front of us spent the entire ride with the stick extended aiming towards them on the ride. The arm extended outside the vehicle, and then above them so they could spend the entire ride making kissy faces at their gopro while on the ride. As the person BEHIND them, not only was it distracting, but I was in the position to see it banging against set pieces that are NORMALLY out of reach.

Second reason:

People extend them with no care to those around them. I have gotten whacked in the face, hard, by someone recklessly swinging their selfie stick in the parks. As crowded as they are, I am sure this happens a lot. I can EASILY see why they are swiftly getting banned. Enforcing it will not be easy, as more often than not when someone in the parks is told to stop doing something, they only comply for as long as someone is watching them.
I would have made sure that a not so nice gesture was in all of their photos. Of course, that's just me. :D

Heaven help the idiot that hits either myself or my family with one. It will end up in the nearest body of water.

Lots of things at Disney World could injure people if used improperly. You can't ban everything. People do rude things all the time. I've had people with big lenses on their camera stick it out in my way at a parade. Did I lose my mind and expect them to run the parade again and go run to guest services? No. I just made the best of the situation. I also didn't jump online and start demanding they ban long lenses on cameras.
So you didn't ask that person to move it? If you don't tell them that their behavior is inconsiderate, they will never learn. If they continue, find a CM and politely ask them if they can do anything. Embarrassment can be a big motivator for a lot of people, though you can get the total ignoramus that couldn't care less.

We understand that you want to use your selfie stick in the park, but you are never going to win your argument here by bringing up any other situations that may happen with other objects and people. Sorry, you aren't going to convince any of us that stupid selfie sticks are a good thing at WDW - EVER!

But he obviously doesn't care about that. He wants to use his selfie stick.

What is wrong with wanting to take my selfie stick to the park ??? If I am considerate of others around me.
on the same arguments of people not paying attention when walking umbrellas should be banned as I have been hit many times by them !

But I guess that you don't seem to understand that YOU are in the minority, and that most people are inconsiderate and don't care in the slightest, even if they were to hit someone with them. Just like anything else, the idiot minority is going to ruin it for you, because I cannot see Disney not banning these at some point. It just might take someone getting hit in the head and causing a need for medical service to do it, or for someone to cause damage to an attraction. It WILL happen at some point with over 40,000 guests in the MK alone each day.

Again you are just like a few others. Well, what about this item. This could happen and then we should ban everything. Really?? You've been hit at WDW by umbrellas many times? In my hundreds of visits there, I have never once been hit, nor witnessed anyone ever getting hit with an umbrella. Nor a tripod. Nor a monopod. Nor any of the other arguments that y'all have tried to use to deflect the topic from selfie sticks.

Well I guess that makes me really unlucky to have experienced something so utterly rare ...
I don't believe they should be blanket banned from WDW.more needs to be done ride wise to prevent a serious accident through the missuse of said stick .

So now Disney needs to change their rides to facilitate the narcissistic people using them on rides? Really?!?!? How entitled do you think you are?

I meant change ride policy and enforcement of said policy.
I.e. if you are dumb enough to have your arm leg or selfie stick outside the ride vehicle something should be done. Perhaps exclusion from the park ...
Apologies if my post was misworded

No problem. It's just that a lot of people around here seem to think that Disney should kow-tow to their every whim. If people even pull out one of those on a ride, they should be expelled from the park immediately.

Look. It's simple. If everyone that brings one of those to the parks could use self-control and not impact any other guests while using them, then I would have zero problem with them. Unfortunately, we have seen, even by the few people on this thread, that is not going to happen. People are sticking them up in rides, at restaurants, during parades and fireworks, and being inconsiderate of other people. Since it is impacting others, and could be a definite safety issue, I would rather Disney error on the side of safety, and ban them from the parks. JMHO.

It hasn't happened YET, but is very likely, that at some point, someone is going to DROP their stick on a ride. It's got the possibility of being a deadly situation if a stick gets stuck on a track and it derails a ride. Even with all the sensors and everything else that's in use on the rides, there's always stuff that'll fall between the cracks.

As others have said, what about when they start "reaching" for things on the rides and clip and break the rides? I mean, they have enough problems with the "dog with the keys" on POTC. Will someone drop something on an omnimover ride and actually get out of the car/buggy/clam shell/whatever it is to go back and get it?

There's a very huge danger with something like this. Sure, there's a lot of things that can cause the same results, but people with monopods/tripods aren't using them on rides. Umbrellas, when on rides, are more than likely at your feet and not being used... The selfie sticks are the only conceivable device that would be used as an extension to do anything while on a ride.

Photopass would be no different then. Just people wanting pictures of themselves.
I see the two as innately different.

One is someone else taking a picture of you and usually the other people in your group.

The other is simply you taking a picture of yourself. Hence the name "selfie".

While the end result may be similar, the means to that end is totally selfish and self-centered.
