Security?

. They will take you to the airport and have your belongings sent if staying on property. You will also recieve the "lifetime ban".

I have a real hard time believing that they will take you to the airport if you're caught doing something wrong. Sure they can kick you off their property, but they can't just take you somewhere against your will.

I also don't believe their security is nearly as good as people say.

As some may know my mother has been a Cm for 15 yrs, as most of you noted Disney is one of the safest places on the planet. Not only is there MANY plain clothes officers there are MANY MANY cameras inclueding the many stores on property. Disney actually tolerates a small percentage of shop lifting. If there is someone who is cleaning house they will pop out of no where as some said and escort you off property. They will take you to the airport and have your belongings sent if staying on property. You will also recieve the "lifetime ban". Disney also uses face recognition at the gates. This technology is used for major sporting events such as the Super Bowl. They want to know if a known Pedo. is on property. Also any terrorist etc. Disney can lose huge amounts of money if any major negative event ever happened on property. We really have no idea the extent of security but I will tell you that it is as exstensive as it could possibly be. A previous poster mentioned something about things being in someones pocket? Well I can give you a little story I was a part of to illustrate the level of Disney's security. My cousins husband was visiting MK one day. We cleared the turnstyles....walked about 50 ft or so and out of no where four men appeared. They asked him " please let us see the pocket knife you have in your right pocket" He pulled it out....they inspected it....told him he could not bring it into the park. He took it back to the car. For the life of us we couldnt figure out how they knew it was a pocketknife? They specifically said "pocketknife".

Disney security is trained to be non-confrontational....it is the happiest place on earth...right? but dont think for one second security is lacking in anyway. There are specialized teams etc. continually training, I can tell you that there are many more "undercover" security officers then uniformed. The uniformed officers are basically for visability and for the guest comfort. The real security is all around you. There is very little privacy when on property. If you think you are getting away with something....your not.....they are letting you do it.

My dad has carried a knife on him for years and never once has it been caught or detected from Disney secruity. I also have friends who work the front gate and face recognition is not in use at any of the main gates. I will give you that they do have many cameras and undercover secruity but that's about it.

There may be security in the park, but the entrance is a joke. I have seen so many people walk right through without their bags getting searched. My husband doesn't usually carry anything, but he was carrying a bag for me the last time and simply walked through without thinking. No one stopped him. It's especially true when it is very crowded at MK when the ferry, monorail and buses happen to get there at the same time, and at Epcot when the tram and monorail get there at the same time. Also, they never check those big camp pants type pockets.
I was able to carry a camera and wallet in those pockets. No one asked to check my pockets. How easy would it be to carry something dangerous in those pockets. I've thought about this before, but it hasn't stopped me from going and having a great time.
But on the other hand, I've seen them make women take off their bags to be searched when they were fully accessible. This happened many times when hurricane Debby was their. Women had their bags under their ponchos to keep them dry. They would pull up the poncho and put the bag, still over their head, onto the table, but a couple of the guys made them take off the poncho and put the bag on the table. Seriously, the bags were fully open and could be moved and probed with no problem. Other checkers had no problem with the ladies leaving their bags over their heads as long as they could see in them. It was the luck of the draw.
I've also seen the guard flirting with a lady and telling her to go on through. He didn't even look in her bag. She just smiled and said thanks, and she and her friends thought it was funny she didn't get checked.
So, just how safe are we. I assume, like most of us, that people are here for good reasons, and we ignore these kinds of things. And, how safe are we anywhere? We can't let these kinds of things stop us from having fun, but we do need to be deligent. If you see anything suspicious, you need to report it.

I've never ever seen a guest allowed to keep their bag on their body. Security always makes them take it off, and open up all compartments.

Also, the bag check is there to make people feel more secure, and to discourage people from bringing contraband into the parks. It is also there to slow people down so that the security guards you don't see can do a bit of profiling.

A few years ago a friend of mine in Florida joined me for a day at the MK. We were wandering aimlessly and talking when he decided he wanted one of the orange drinks over near the Tiki Room. We each bought one and kept walking. As we got past the Jungle Cruise, we noticed that the wait time was 5 minutes, so we looked at each other and said, 'why not?'

We thought we could finish drinking the frozen concoction up until we boarded the boat, but at the entrance we were told we had to dispose of it. I had just paid for it, and had maybe 3 sips...so no way was I going to throw it out.... I looked around and saw the little half window at the entrance - it has bars on it to make it look like its the prison - and said, 'let's just hide the drinks here...we will be back in just a few minutes and can finish them then.'

So we ride and come back in record time....when we go to get the drinks - they were gone. I look around and think maybe we hid them in a different window, but I had the right window. A CM came up to us and in a very fake French accent told us that two mystery men came and took away our drinks, but if we should happen to walk five feet to the right and look behind a column, the drinks could be found. Apparently, one of the hidden cameras picked us up as we hid the drink and people were dispatched to investigate. Finding nothing more than an orange slushie, they moved the drinks and waited for us to reclaim them. I was actually quite thankful - they could have ditched the drinks, and were very pleasant about the whole incident. (I will never do that again, I promise!)

I also realized how extensive security must be behind the scenes.....

They're there. I've been watched while browsing in stores. Shoplifters beware! They do dress as tourists and sometimes work in pairs. Don't plan on getting away with it!!

But I left a store with merchandise once (a long time ago) and wasn't stopped. After a few steps, I realized I was still holding something. I had decided against buying it, but when I found that I had already stolen it, the urge to pay for it made buying the thing imperative. I went back in and paid for it, lol.

They also have people in the park. I don't know how many, but I've become familiar with at least one of them.

I can only go what I have been told.....maybe another "bus driver" story  but the knife story is absolutely true.....I was there. As far as security is concerned, I have to disagree. Disney has to much to lose.

No. Security does not always make them take them off. Do you stand there and watch every person enter the park? Just because you haven't seen it, doesn't mean it isn't so. I saw this happen with my own eyes. I actually thought the ladies should be allowed to keep the bag on their shoulders since the strap was long enough for the bag to sit on the counter and be turned if needed. The contents were clearly visible. That's probably why some of the officers didn't make the ladies take their bags off. Maybe they are suppose to make them remove them, but they don't always do that. Some of them are very thorough, while others just feel the bottom of a bag and do a half-handed look inside. I've been in those lines too many times to not see this stuff. They also never check inside hats. Have you ever seen them ask even one person to take off his/her hat? Hats are one of the first things schools quit allowing because of them being used to hide weapons, food, drugs, etc.
Have you ever seen them check anyone's pockets? No. Because it isn't part of their protocal. How easy to have something in a pocket. I still say security is not what it should be. They should have metal detectors, but I know that wouldn't be feasible with the number of people who go through each day.
My point was simply that it's not the secure place you think it is. I understand there really is no secure place these days, but they could do a little better.
And lastly, for you to say they always make them take them off, in response to me saying they didn't, was the same as calling me a liar. I have no reason to lie. What would be the point. If anyone says anything you don't agree with or have not seen, do you assume it's a lie or it didn't happen?

Oh good grief. I'm not calling you a liar, relax.

From what I understand they used to allow people to keep their bags on, but after a guest complained about being touched by the person doing the bag search, they made the change.

In the last few years the standard is to make the guest take their bag off of their person and place it on the table. I have heard that request made many many times over my last few trips.

As far as the hats and pockets go, that wasn't being discussed. And Disney doesn't have a policy where the guest needs to remove their hat or empty their pockets. If they did, I would expect all guests to adhere to that policy. Honestly, if you feel that unsafe WDW maybe you shouldn't go. No security is perfect! But we all have to be comfortable with that knowledge.

When you emphatically stated that they make everyone remove the bags, you did call me a liar. You made that comment directly to my post about seeing that happen. This latest time was in June during Deby, not long ago.
I said they don't have the protocal to take off hats/ check pockets. That was the point.
I am not so worried about the safety that I wouldn't go, but I am not blind to breaches in security either.
Just as in an airport, we all need to be vigilent. There's nothing wrong with that.
I am so tired of people telling others that if something bothers them they shouldn't go or if they don't like someone's response to get off this site. We will just have to try and ignore the rudeness.
There are plenty of people on here who come to get info and give info to overlook the ones who have to have something to say about everything. (Not necessarily you. I don't know you.)
Just telling someone "to relax" is rude enough for goodness sakes.

The bag checks are more of a formality. Do you feel safer because of it? You can easily sneak items into the park. Just saying.

There was an incident this year at DCA near the Tower of Terror with an unruly guest that made security in that park seem like a joke.

While there are tons of small level security like cameras and plain clothes officers, there are also many large measures in place. All of the park entrances backstage for cars have barriers like the ones you would find at a nuclear power plant.

Being a federal law enforcement officer, I am the epitome of, "Have gun, will travel". Many is the time my sidearm is concealed and security has not noticed. And no, its not in one of those ginormous packs. I'm not knocking the security cast members, just making the point, if someone wants to do something, they will. Also, the YouTube video of the pepper spray at the ToT is pricless.

I've wondered why they can check our bags, purses and whatnot at the entrances, but let strollers weighted down with huge diaper bags, etc go right on through?

I can say this, having been at both domestic parks. DL security at the entrance is no joke. I carry a small Eddie Bower across the body shoulder bag (the one in my profile pic). Big enough for me to put my Canon DSLR and my Photopass cards, a small bottle of advil and acid reducers, oh and a tide pen... So quite small. And at DL they wanted to look in every pocket... take the camera out... blah blah... I was ok with it, rather them check than not, but it held the lines up. But at WDW, they peek... and just say, ok. Have a great day. They dont look under the strollers either...

But didnt DL go thru some rough times and they cracked down on things. Maybe I am wrong, but if that was the case, I can see why they would be a little more touchy about security. Plus DL is a locals park, so a lot of local LA people visit.

But not one time in my years of being a Disney-nut have I ever felt unsafe at the World.

It would be awesome to have a job as security in disney

I have a friend that is security at WDW. He loves his job. Said they have a lot of fun working for the mouse.

I just wanna see the room with all of those video monitors. I bet it looks like a casino security room! A Ba-zillion screens!
