Security at the Entrance

Please someone tell me what the point of these Security Guards are for at the entrance to the parks???:shrug::confused:

Its not just Disney but Universal Studios and Sea World that these guys operate at

What are they looking for, or is it really just a new way of making people queue up on the way in

I really cannot see what purpose they serve,
if they are looking for weapons, they can be carried in pockets,
they can't be looking for food because they have seen my water bottles several times this week as well as a breakfast bar and said nothing

so whats the point?

Bombs are kinda something they don't want brought in. Also handguns and whatnot.

But it's also to ease the mind of guests. It makes people feel just a bit safer as they enter the parks.

In Pittsburgh, more specifically West Mifflin, PA...is a popular theme park called Kennywood (popular to us Pittsburghians that is!)

The area around it is not what you would call the best. There have been more than one shooting in the park, though not common - it does happen.
But it's a very kid friendly park and very fun to go to.

Kennywood has metal detectors to ensure safety.

While we like to believe that Disney does not attract any criminals...I'm sure they are there. So yes, it's a good thing to have someone checking to make sure someone didn't "accidentally" forget their fun in their purse or something.

Disney security is multi-layered and more than what you see at the bag check. It's been proven to be effective and has detected a number of possible problems over the years.

I've personally see them remove a knife from someone.

Also notice how there is never any trouble inside the parks? It's not just good luck.

Handguns can be carried in in pockets or in belts under a shirt

I thought about them checking for bombs, but then I thought about the suicide bombers with the suicide vests on
so 1 'test entrance' to the park will let a would-be attacker know what will be checked and what won't

If anything like a bombing was ever to happen inside a park - the 'security' will get such a slating for their totally inaffective methods

They would be better off patrolling the park - undercover if neccessary - and throwing drunks out, especially of Epcot World Showcase than putting a wooden stick inside peoples backpacks!

Being drunk is not a crime.
Being obnoxious is also not a crime. (as much as i'd love it to be!)

While other guests can get out of hand in being loud and obnoxious...until they physically harm themselves, another guest or Disney property and/or public disturb the rest of the guest with "un disney like" remarks...you won't see these undercovers jump into action.

If Disney security jumped every time a guest was drunk, loud or obnoxious...it would be a constant thing. not everyone can be the perfect, model guest. Disney has to pick and choose their battles. Guns, knives...a little more dangerous than double fisting with gran marnier slushes

I dont have a problem with people having a drink or getting blind drunk, there probably isnt a man alive that likes a drink more than me,
but what about smashing maracas, throwing the contents at the ducks, then throwing the broken pieces into the lagoon, whilst the staff at the concession stands look on

I just think the time spent by the security at the gates can be better spent inside

I don't have a problem with the bag check. The line is short and it goes fast. Two minutes maybe? But yeah a person can have a gun and carry it in his pocket. I don't think Disney wants to ever get to the point where people are patted down while coming in.

As for a bomb being snuck in, well, all I can say is that in my true honest opinion God protects a place that makes people as happy as Disney World. Which is why I have never heard of a bomb threat/terrorist attack. It just cannot happen in the happiest place on earth, it's almost blasphemus! The most cold hearted criminal would change his mind once he walks down main street about planting a bomb

I think a suicide vest would be really hard to hide in a setting like that. Most of the time it's warm there. If you see someone wearing big jackets and sweaters when it's hot then you can assume that something is up, even tho there is the off chance that someone is just cold.

I think everyone needs to be aware of their surroundings. It may sound paranoid but I think it's a good way to keep yourself save. Even since I was a teen dating and driving, my parents always told me to be aware of the people and things around me. Always check the backseat before you get into the car. Even as an adult I check all around. It's scary in this day and age and it's awful that we have to be this way. Could something bad like a bombing, shooting or knifing happen at WDW? Yes, but it probably won't.

I would like to think that security is more observant then we give them credit for. I don't mind the bag check. We are usually there early enough where it only takes about 30 seconds. I just make sure all the zippers on my camera case are open.

Security is much tighter then you think. The bag check is only what they want you to see.

As for suicide bombing .... which is a ridiculous concept to deal with .... there's no defense against it.

To speculate that it could happen at WDW is needless fearmongering. Complete paranoia.

When we went back in '07, security at MK stopped a woman from bringing a hand gun into the parks. She was arrested and banned from Disney property. I don't mind security, because they're making the parks safer for guests.

One thing that all of you are forgetting is that this security came on right after September 11. I was there on vacation that week. The security is a joke still to this day. Why do I say this? Well do they have any security checks at the monorail stations or ferry boats? If a person or 4 people, wanted to use a bomb or bombs to cause havoc it would be very simple. Have bomber #1 get on the ferry boat, have bomber #2 at the cattle call security check just standing there, have bomber #3 get on a monorail, and have bomber #4 in the monorail station. Now have them all set off there bombs and you have, 1 a sunk boat and hurt or murdered people. 2 hurt or murdered people that were waiting in security lines for their safety. 3 a monorail derailed, hurt or murder people, and a shut down rail system. 4 people in the station waiting for the train hurt or murdered.
One problem with security check points is that they cause a backup and you have a large amount a people in a kill zone.

The security the day of and days afterwards at the resorts were also a joke. They no longer would allow you to use your room key to open the gate. They would ask for a picture ID, look at it, look at you and see if you had a parking permit. Then they would let you in. Remember that the terrorists that took over the planes had to show picture ID's to the airlines on September 11. So looking at my picture id, and then looking at me, and seeing that it is my picture is not any security.

Explosives are small in size, so why would you think a vest would be bulky? Also they do not check strollers, and even if they did all the bomber would need to do is fill the metal tubes that make the stroller with C4 or blast/det cord. How do I know about explosives? I was in the munitions field in the USAF.

But let me add this. If I am going to be murdered by evil doers, why not at the happiest place on earth. At least I will have been having fun when I died.
