We had agreed way back in the beginning that we were both going to wear black. She put off getting her dress till a couple of weeks ago and she bought a plum colored one.

That must have really looked odd with all the red dresses. I think black was a wise choice - you fit in to the whole color scheme without outdoing the bride (but you really looked fabulous Dot!):lookaroun

Surprisingly, most of the time, the dresses the moms wear usually don't go with the bridesmaids dresses. And half the time, the moms usually don't match color-wise anyway. So...it's all good.
