Seagulls and other Pesky Birds

One of my biggest pet peeves at WDW is the seagulls and other pesky birds. Can anyone tell me how bad the bird situation is down there? I went in January and I swear you had to duck and run anywhere you went. Is it still that bad?

It was the same way in Feb 2002. Unfortunately these birds have now adapted to the people in the parks feeding them anything. It is very annoying and I am sure it is not healthy for them at all.

I worked in Epcot for more than a year and never had problems with them.... but...... don´t plan on eating one of those pastries with sugar sold at American Adventure! (I can´t remember its name! :brick: )

They are bad near American Adventure... that´s where I saw people running away from them! A friend of mine got hit by a fish spitted by one of them while sitting at the benches of the AmGard Theater! :hurl:

As strange as it may seem, I got hit on the head by a low flying duck at Dixie Landings several years ago. Other than that one fluke, I've always found the ducks at Disney to be on the polite side. I've never had any memorable run-ins with the seagulls.

The birds are always around Frontierland, specially during the Winter. Hey, it's people's fault. We tell them not to feed them, but do they listen? Nooooooo, only when they get pooped in the head or have their churro stolen, THAT's when they learn.

Several years ago at that restaurant that used to be just inside Adventureland on the right ( I think it was called Adventureland Terrace), the birds there were very aggressive. Back then, you could sit out on the terrace....it was open air, but covered, thus a popular spot to eat. But it was popular for the birds too, because they get to come get the scraps after the people leave.

Well one time I was eating with a friend....he was telling me a story and happened to have a french fry in his hand. One of the birds swooped in and tried to grab the fry right out of his hand. The bird was unsuccessful, but we made sure to keep a close eye on our food after that.

In conclusion, yes, those birds are quite aggressive if you have food. And if I ever get injured by a bird there, I will squash every last one I see. Its' not like they are endangered or anything. Heh heh...hope there aren't any animal activists in here.

I remember when I stayed at the Polynesian Village there were a group of ducks that would come by our patio door and beg for food...it was our own fault though, the day we got to DW we fed the ducks some bread and like clockwork every morning there they were quacking and waiting for their share of the food! LOL!!!

LOL, well, I kind of am, but I can't imagine you're very serious

Personally, I am annoyed much easier by people than by animals, so the gulls and other birds really don't irritate me. But if I had a small child, I would be very careful and probably eat inside. :lookaroun

I agree with Nifty, I hope that there are no animal activists reading this post. But I think that they do a mass extermination every once in awhile. Put some poisoned food outside the park and have them all poisoned. Because one trip the birds are really bad and then "poof" there are none. But I really think that the stupid people have to stop feeding them.

The Birds.

Actually, most of the offending birds are migratory. It is against federal law to posion them and WDW knows this from previous "experience". As many have pointed out on this thread it isn't the birds that cause the problem, it's the humans that feed them. The "spilled" popcorn and other "junk" doesn't help matters. If we don't look out for the birds, we may one day have a Silent Spring and then will only see birds in the Tiki Room.

ONly run in I've had with a seagull at WDW was in 1990. It was at the Fort Wilderness dock, they used to have a snack bar, my mother got us hot dogs, and she went back for napkins, and the flew to my table and snatched her hot-dog from the bun. I've held a grudge EVER SINCE, you just don't mess with FOOD!

The birds are worse at Sea World! We were having some free beer and pretzels at the "Hospitality Tent" and they wouldn´t leave us alone! Those were big black birds! Scary....

Maria, you took the words right out of my mouth (there's a song title in there somewhere !) -
Sea World is awful for seagulls, must be the fish !
Never had a problem at WDW though.

OH I almost forgot about those bugs! We're so shameless. We made a tape last trip for my grandma, to show her what WDW is like, since she will never get to go. We included some p*rn bug footage. She thought it was hilarious. We had several names for them, none of which I can post on this forum!!!

We call them "Love Bugs" and they usually appear in May and September. If you don't wash them off your car quickly, their "fluids" can pit and corrode your paint! You can purchase special cleaner at local auto supply stores, and many people purchase a special "bra" (no I'm not making this up!) to cover the front grill and bumper of their car. :)

In Frontierland, the birds have food-snatching down to an ART!

I saw this three times at the McDonalds french fry stand.

One bird would swoop down and and try to knock the french fries out of peoples hands right after they bought them...and if they were successful, then a bunch more birds would appear and grab the fries that hit the ground.

One of the poor souls that got attacked was my wife...I saw the bird dive-bombing her but didn't have a chance to say anything. We lost half an order of fries.

But you're right Maria...at Sea World the birds are much more aggressive..they are bigger and they get right in your face while you're sitting down to eat.:lookaroun
