I use 1024 x 768 I dont understand how people can stand any more than that, it gets too small and things are hard and a pain to read

1152 x 864 is perfect for my 19-inch, though I suppose if I really wanted to I could take a step higher to 1280 x 1024...

Since the physical size of your monitor does not changes this means that you are showing fewer pixels in the same amount of space. Since most things on your desktop (like icons, fonts, etc.) are designed to be a certain number of pixels in size, they will appear to be enlarged when you are showing few pixels per inch on your screen. Conversely, these same items will appear smaller as you increase your screen resolution.

aaahh... thank you... I think I got it now.

I run 1600 x 1200 on my two desktops (21" monitor so the letters aren't too small for me, but my employees run at 1280x1024 generally -- they say my resolution is too much for their eyes)

On my laptop I run 1280x1024 -- 16" screen.

1280 x 1024 is the lowest resolution I run ever. My wife likes 1024 x 768 on her computer though with a 17" monitor.
