Giant LED displays would look much worse. and would be difficult to get in there with the proper curves. Projectors are the best option though if they wanted a better system they would used lasers instead of bulbs to drive the projectors. But that would cost more and lord knows Disney isn't going to spend more when enough people are satisfied with what they have already.

In general a 4k projector is going to far exceed what you get from film. You could get better resolution if you were to find some old school Imax 70 films but even today I think most Imax theaters use 4k projectors instead of film projectors so I'm not sure you can find any Imax theaters that still use actual film projectors.

If you have not been too impressed with what our local theater is showing bear in mind that many theaters that use digital projectors aren't using 4k as when the first wave of digital projectors came a large percent of theaters opted for 2k projectors to save money. Moreover even when a theater uses an actual 4k projector there is a good chance that what your seeing is actually an upscaled 2k movie because studios often release movies in 2k and not 4k to save money on their end. When Disney finally revises the circle vision to digital projectors I would expect the quality of what you see will improve over the current film version.

With a large number of films now using Alexa65 and even older Panavision lenses, digital looks better than ever.

True. Of course the best part of digital is that once you have a final video you have zero loss when you make additional copies of it. Sometimes when you are watching an actual film it can be a print made from another print that could be several generations removed from the original film that was edited when they made the movie and every copy loses a little bit.

Whats confuses me is when they used Ultra Panavision lenses. I am assuming they are cropping down so not sure why they would use it. Maybe they like the flare ... lol... this is what happens when you go to school for cinematography :)

Lots of lenses will have softer images and some light fall off on the far edges and corners so while they might be cropping the end result could still be a better image than a current image shot with a lens made for the field of view they are actually using. I know I get better results from some of my Nikon lenses when I put them on a MFT camera even though I have a completely different field of view.

It's been four years since the last post here; am I right in saying the only WDW attraction still using film projectors is the China Pavillion's Circle-Vision 360° show "Reflections of China"?

I haven't been able to visit it personally, but this 3-month-old video of it sure leads me to believe that film projectors are being used, given the flickering and film artifacts.

I believe so, except Soarin over California might use film still…

I'm not sure I got this right but wasn't the original change to the twisted world due to the OG film being allowed to decay? I was wondering how they brought it back and a digital copy of Anaheim's with new projectors was all I could think of.

Soarin’ Over California was digitized prior to the opening of Shanghai Disneyland in preparation for Soarin’ Around the World.
