Sci Fi or Mama Melroses?

We are trying to decide if we should eat at the Sci Fi (we have eaten there twice before) or try Mama Melroses? We are on the DDP and wondering if you could order a shake at the Sci Fi as your beverage? or would it be considered your dessert? We have never been to Mama Melroses, and are thinking of trying somewhere new. We are going next month and are still undecided.....

You can order the shake and pay out of pocket for it as it is considered a specialty drink and therefore exempt from the DDP.

edit: I just researched this and am getting mixed messages. It appears that it may be up to your server.

I have been to SciFi before and the food was fine but I didn't like the theme personally so I would pick Mama's for that reason. There are loads of other places to get a yummy shake. :)

We were able to order a shake as the non-alcoholic/non-specialty drink on the DDP plan. Specialty drink is usually a special merchandise drink. Some places do give you a hard time when ordering something other than soft drink. Morocco was one of the places that wouldn't let me choose a smoothie over a soft drink. I really dislike the inconstancy between places and servers. I don't like to disagree or make a scene while at WDW. Sadly confrontation happens more often at WDW.

I would choose Sci-Fi over Mama's. I really disliked that place.

Having just had a horrible experience at Mama Melrose's, I'd say go for sci-fi. But, if you want to try it, go for it. It seems to be rumored to be dissapearing soon.

I just had the worst meal at Sci-Fi food came out cold twice. My ds ' food came out with something he's allergic to on it after speaking to the chef and the beer was warm. Server was upset when I mentioned these things to her and she rolled her eyes when I mentioned the allergy problem.

Sci Fi probably has the worst food of any WDW Table Service restaurant. People go to Sci Fi for the atmosphere, not for anything else.

Mama Melrose's is more like you typical good chain Italian restaurant, a step up from Olive Garden but not a Carrabba's. The food is infinitly better than Sci Fi but the atmosphere's not as fun.

So, it really comes down to whether you value style over substance.

Besides, if you've already eaten at Sci Fi twice, why not try something new? (Unless everyone hates it!)

My wife has never had a problem getting a shake on the dining plan. I've always had a pretty good burger. A couple of times it was GREAT. I'm a chili purist so I have ethical issues with beans in chili, but for a soup it was really good;)

We enjoy Sci-Fi as a break from the sun, even in December, and being in my late 40's I get a kick out of the atmosphere. This year may be the first year we don't have a Sci-Fi ADR, but I suspect we'll make it to the picnic table in back just to grab a shake.

We've never had trouble ordering a milkshake as our DDP beverage anywhere on property.

We're going to Sci-Fi next time, too -- but JUST for an out-of-pocket milkshake, enjoyed in a fun atmosphere. We'll spend out dining credits elsewhere.

After many years, I have never had a bad experience at Sci-Fi. But there are many not so good reviews and I just count myself lucky that it has never happened to me. But I only go for lunch and I try to get an 11:00 or 11:15. They haven't been open long so it is right when they are getting started. I also have seen some interesting things on their menu and I avoid them. I have always had great cheeseburgers and fries there. Good soup and apps. I steer clear of other items. I once had a great chicken sandwich there too but it is changed on the menu now.

Never been to Melrose. I came close. They changed their menu and I cancelled beforehand. That pasta with the chicken or shrimp pipette with cream sauce was supposedly awesome. Never tried it but people raved. There is nothing on the menu I can't get better and at reasonable prices by me, so I don't bother. And other restaurants in DHS have a better theme. I can't pay for fried apps and cold antipasti that I know are frozen or not going to be quality cold items that won't rival the very good Italian salumerias near me.

Haven't done MM in years...but remember I didn't really care for it...

Love Sci fi - never a bad experience....

But, that being said, I always try something new. Last year went to Tony's even though I heard iffy things about it. Glad I went, was nice, nothing woweewowwow, but it was something I had never done.... So if you have done Sci Fi, maybe it would be good to go to MM and then come back and let us know what you think!
