i live in texas and school starts in aug. we are going to the world the last week of sept, i have custody of my 14 year old bro this will be his first year of high school. hes not the best student ....ok he doesnt get good grade but he trys....sometimes. we will be go from school for 5 days he can miss only 9 before he looses credit, hes never had a problem with attendance. my question is has anyone ever pulled thier kids out of school before? do i have to lie and say we have to vist our sick aunt or something.
this is the only time of year we can go
springbeak-too much money, husband can't get work off(plus star tours is closed)
summer-hotter and stickier than the devils ball sack!- husband cant get off work
winter break- way to much money! husband can't get off work
my husband is a chef in a tourist spot downtown san antonio and anytime anything is going on holidays and whenever kids out of school he has to work!

I didn't realize some states were so strict with their rules about absences. There were many semesters where I missed 10 days (some legit sickness, some vacations) and I never got in any trouble (granted I got good grades).

My wife and I have already decided that we are definitely taking our kids out of school to go to Disney World as well as other vacations. I'm a dentist and that gives me some flexibility in scheduling my vacations and off peak times are so much cheaper and more convenient. Having gone to school for 20 years, I can honestly say there was no single week that was more important than a good vacation with your family. That being said, if our kids are not able to handle making up the work, then we may have to reconsider this policy.

The flexibility in your last sentence is key.

Yeah, I don't know about other states but Texas can be pretty strict. The truancy laws are definitely there althought how strictly they are enforced is largely dependant upon the local schools, school boards, and/or authorities. I suspect in some areas they're much more stringent while in others they're less. In our area they were more middle of the road. They'd send nasty letters once 9 absences of any kind were accumulated but I never had them actually act on anything.

Also when the Texas schools boot a kid because of the 'No Child Left Behind' thing, they'll give you the lovely alternative of sending your kid to boot camp at the local youth (juvenile dentention) campus. The "teachers" there aren't certified. How they manage this is beyond me but it's done. I know this first hand. :fork:

"Lovely alternative"... as in "choice." That's how they "manage it." It's a decision. Just like any parent of a kid, whether truant or not, can send them to military or boarding school if they see fit.

Heading for the great escape.
In Scotland if you miss a day of school they class you English.

And no one wants that sort of stigma.

As for the wacky backy merchants, in my era it was the route favoured by the wee neds who couldnt handle a bevvy without becoming a bam.

The boot camp is a day program. You drop Little Johnny off at 6:30 sharp or they send a marked unit to your house to pick him up. They do "boot camp" type activities in addition to classroom time. You pick up Little Johnny at a specified time in the afternoon. Yes, there are choices for parents if they are wise enough to not take the public school's word as the absolute power and seek private alternatives. Unfortunately, that info is not volunteered. :animwink:

In our area they have the alternative campus which is where kids who are suspended from their current campuses are sent temporarily. From there they have to go back to their original campus if that campus will allow it or go somewhere else. The "boot camp" is for the kids who are expelled following their expulsion hearing and are not allowed into the alternative campus that is run by the independant school board or any of it's campuses. They tell you your kid has to go to "boot camp" for however long satisfies them then they "consider" allowing your child back into their district. I could see this being fantastic if every kid who is expelled needs that sort of intervention. Unfortunately, a lot of the issues that send kids in less desirable directions are the direct result of the neglect of the bubbas who are running the schools to begin with. Their fix rather than correct the problems is to throw children who are not related to them in any way or politically tied to anyone noteable under the bus and out the door. Hence, the good ol' boy or "Bubba" school system. It's a lovely thing. And nearly half my $4k+ annual property taxes pay for this.

Not to be a smartass, but wouldn't the easy solution to this problem be to make sure Little Johnny was in class in the first place?

If that was what they were trying to boot your kid for, absolutely. That's not always the case. We never had truancy issues with our boys. I'm serious. I think these folks near us could give Deliverance a run for it's money. LOL! Mostly I just illustrate that the laws and things are in place for the ISD's in Texas to use at their discretion and these are some avenues they can take. We never had problems with the absences for vacation as far as the school being angry and we took ours out for 6 consecutive days 3 times. We intended to not do that any longer for academic reasons. I've heard of people being fined and taken to truency court, tho. The OP looks like they're from San Antonio. Texas schools are a trip. I far preferred Louisiana. :animwink:

thats why im so nervous about pulling him out, but everyone around here keeps telling me not to worry, i've ever pulled him out before and it only a 5 days of school.
so i guess i'm going go through with it!
hes going to summer school this year even if he dont need it extra tutoring and hes not going to miss a day next year even if hes half dead!
once i buy those plane tickets theres no going back!

and now my husband told me the main chef is leaving back to mexico before september
so that means promotion! but now they are kind of upset with him for leaving in sept
but hes mean and told them if cant go then he better pay him back for every penny he already spent on this trip.
HAHAHAHA they were scared that he was going to quit and so they said it was fine and he got a raise!

the school told me its better to send him to school sick and have him be sent home so that way hes still counted for( i guess they really want thier money)

High School only lasts 4 years and WDW has been around a lot longer than that. There will be time for trips after he has graduated, or on a school break in the future. I mean no disrespect, honestly I don't. If you pick a date and feel it is your only choice, then so be it. Asking for our input is a whole other issue and you will get opinions on either side of the fence. Our family made plently of trips to WDW on school breaks only, it was the best choice for us.

thats why i posted this question cuz i wanted to get everyones opion, if he was a straight a students and if we had money to blow and if my husbands work let him then i would have no need to ask i would be able to go whenever i feel like but things suck sometimes and i needed a lil help. from what it sounds like its not going to kill him to miss a week of school as long as we do everything we need to do. plus we will probaly never go anywhere for a while if ever again. this will be our first and last trip probaly. i just want a real family trip, like when we were lil and when everything was good

hey man im sorry if i offended anyone but someone else brought up my screename, i was tryin to ask a real question, i aint gonna try to be fake for a bunch people i dont know

I was the one that asked. As a parent of two kids, I make it my business to know more than they do, especially about drugs.

Now, you can argue that pot is no worse than alcohol and should be legalized. That's not the point here.

The point is that it is clearly important enough to you to make it your screen name. If instead of phonedave i called myself Boozing_it_up_in_WDW I would think that indicates a bit of an obsession with alcohol.

So, no judgement here. But if pot (or for that matter any 'recreational' pastime that eats up money - drinking, gambling, shopping, etc) is a large part of your life, and you are the guardian of a minor, you may want to rethink your leisure pursuits.

As I said before, you got the short end of the stick, being 16 and all of a sudden having to take care of your siblings. But, as hard as that is, it is the situation. You are going to have to work hard to make the best of it, and in doing so, make some tough decisions about a variety of things, not just going to WDW during school.

Good luck (I mean that sincerely)

I agree with this, but I'll even take it a step further. There are a TON of people on this board and elsewhere that take Disney itself a step too far when it comes to the responsible management of a household. Just think of all the times somebody celebrates with a thread about how they just paid off their next trip. There was a thread recently about someone who managed to pay off their next trip and that there was a SECOND trip on the horizon that still needed to be paid off. Am I the only one who finds it totally irresponsible to book vacations that you may or may not be able to afford in six months?

Before I get accused of being a spoiled brat with tons of Disney vacations under my belt, I'll just say that my parents took me twice as a kid because that's what we could afford. We were lucky enough to win a trip in a radio contest, I went once with my high school band, and Disney flew me out once for a recruiting event. My other trips have been paid for on my dime by working while in school. The only class I missed over any of these trips was a week in second grade because our free (radio contest) trip was for fixed dates. A kid's place is in the classroom, especially someone who has trouble with the material.
