School in the south in August 2009

A question for those of you that live in the south - Will the kids be back in school the week of Aug 17 - 22, 2009? We like to go down then because the crowds get lighter when school starts. I see Labor Day is very late next year though. It isn't until Sept 7th, not sure if that affects when school starts.

The Gwinnett Schools (just NE of Atlanta) will start back on August 10th. In the past most of the metro area schools are starting around this time, some a few days earlier or later. I guess that the good news is that school will be out on May 20th this coming summer. We headed down right after school was out last year and had a great time, not as hot as I remember from some June trips.

You can expect that many schools in the South will be in operation by then, or starting that week, so it should be thinning out.

Thanks for the help. Here in NY we don't go back after Labor Day, but are stuck in school until the very end of June!

In our parish here in Louisiana, we also start around the 10th. Arkansas started, (I think) the last week of August this year. I know it was 2 or 3 weeks after we did. But because we get out so early, we're going to DW the 2nd week of May next year.

Florida schools start 2 weeks before Labor Day. We used to start around the 1st of August but parents complained so now schools can't start earlier than 2 weeks befor Labor Day.

Here in Texas there has actually been legislation passed that dictates how early or late school can run. THis year my boys started August 25th which was the week before Labor Day and will get out on June 4th. When the hubby and I were at WDW in May last year a lot of parents had taken their kids out the last week of school since not much goes on then anyway. I guess the same approach could be taken to the 1st week of school since it's mostly a time for orientation and review.

IIRC, Orlando area schools aren't starting until the 24th next year, which is about a week later than we started this year.

I am a teacher in North Carolina and we also have a law about when school has to begin and end, so most schools in North Carolina will not begin the school year until August 24th.

i don't have any kids that age, but most of my friends do. school usually starts around the second week of august here in tallahassee. i have heard that is a good time to go. no matter what, have a ton o fun :sohappy:

Thanks for the info! With Labor Day being so late this year maybe we will wait until Aug 23 to go. There may be free dining crowds then, but hopefully nothing too bad.

Keep in mind that you'll get all the British kids at that time of year though because they tend to go for 2 weeks at a time and don't go back to school until mid-late September
