Scent piped in at MK?

I was reading the "Five days of Disney" article in Slate (see http://forums.wdwmagic.com/showthread.php?t=291391) and someone posted in the reader discussion forum:

I was just at Disney World last month. The whole time I was in the Magic Kingdom (but not in any other park) I detected a sweet, perfumy aroma that I believe was too pronounced to come from the flowers. Do they pipe in scent?

I thought that was an interesting question. I tried to remember whether I remembered that too, and I couldn't say one way or the other. Does anyone know about this?

My mom used to work at Disneyland. They do pump in scents like sweets in front of the bakery or popcorn on Main Street.

I've heard that they pump in "fresh cookie" smell on Main Street, but I have not heard of any floral scents. I'm sure they do though - if they do it w/cookies, they probably do it elsewhere in the park w/other scents. Cool concept.

I'm doing the Keys to the Kingdom tour this summer - I'll ask our guide this!

Awww I hate to break the magic but its true. When you walk into the confectionary doors look up and you can see the vents it comes out of. I haven't looked anywhere else since I wasn't working long hours anywhere else. But it would make sense.

I was listening to Lou Mongello's Audio Guide To Walt Disney. During that tour he does mention that they do in fact "pump" in scent in. It called a Smellatizer
Also used in Soarin' & SSE

Just a warning to anyone going to read the article....it may be a bit tough to swallow. I tried to read the first one and had to stop a few paragraphs in. Not saying it is a horrible article, it just isn't exactly written by a fan. People have been discussing it on the LJ Disney group and they are saying it is slightly negative. Let's put it this way, it's not exactly covered in Pixie Dust

I love the smells on Main Street, I also love the smells in Soarin and Mickey's Philharmagic. All this talk is making me crave a main street backery chocolate chip cookie.:slurp:

Also, Disney's California Adventure at Disneyland pumps out a coffee-type smell in their main entrance, encouraging people to visit the coffee shop there.

One of the major scents they pump out on main street is the scent of the fresh waffle cones for the ice cream store. They smell a whole lot better than they taste. Not that they are bad by any means, but the flavor doesn't stack up to the smell.

It's mostly vanilla and other spices they pump out. They all smell much better than they do inside the store they are enticing you to walk into.

What a neat concept. But, it kinda just killed the magic for me. I love all of the different smells at WDW...now I know some of them aren't real!!

The cookies, ice cream, popcorn.....ahhh.

Smellitzers in-use in WDW (that I know of):

-Main Street Bakery: cookies (ice cream shop is right next door, so it may be a two-shops-with-one-smellitzer situation)
-Main Street Confectionary: smell of some type of candy, I know this changes to peppermint/candy cane in the holiday season
-Stitch's Great Escape: chili dog
-Philharmagic: apple pie
-Spaceship Earth: burning Rome
-Soarin': various smells including pine and orange
-Journey Into Imagination with Figment: skunk
-Test Track: corrosion robots
-Universe of Energy: I *believe* they have a "primordial" smell in the diorama
-Villains in Vogue shop at the Studios: candy apple smell outside the Old Hag's window
-It's Tough to Be a Bug: stinkbug
-Kali River Rapids: jasmine in the mist of the lift hill

Horizons used to have the "Loranges" smell.
Tower of Terror had one installed during its most recent changeover to the random patterns, but after the burning-wires smell freaked out some early-morning Guests when it was left on after overnight testing, it was removed.

I *think* that's it... Did I miss any?

Our tour told us they do not pipe smells onto Main Street anymore. Our tour guide told us that they did originally, but that they had to stop because piping out fake bakery smell was illegal, but now they simply have fans that blow the real smell out.:slurp:

I guess the answer this question depends on who you ask :animwink:
