Saving Points - How Many Years?

How many years can you bank points? I'm about to break down and by the DVC because over the last 5 or 6 years I've sunk the purchase price already. Might as well buy now and get it over with.

One year at a time. For instance, if my use year runs from June 2014 to June 2015, and I do not use all or some of those points, I can bank them into my June 2015 to June 2016 Use Year, and use them with the points native to that use year to reserve stays that begin on June 1st 2015 or later. Those points could not be banked again forward another year. However, if I were not to use all the points "native" to the use year June 2015/16, those points could be banked forward. When booking, DVC member services always uses banked or borrowed points first, as they are they least flexible. Banking decision must be made by, as I recall, the 10 month mark, so for June Use years, the deadline is March 31st.

Similarly, when one borrows points from the next use year into the current use year, they must be used that year and can not be banked back forward again. And also once again, that would not prevent one from banking unused "native" points that were left over.

Pretty much what MaxsDad said. You can't bank indefinitely, only one year's worth of points can be banked to the next use year. If you think you wouldn't be going to WDW every year, you can figure out how many points you think you would need, buy 1/3rd that amount of points, and use banking and borrowing to go every 3 years. If DVC won't sell you that amount directly, you can go on the resale market and save a ton of dough. Buying resale restricts you a little bit, you won't be able to use your DVC points for thing like the DVC Cruise line or Adventures by Disney or the Concierge Collection, but since you're not buying as many points, the money you save there could be applied to the non-DVC vacations where you see fit. And you can still use the DVC points at any DVC resort at the 7 month mark, plus RCI and a few other exchanges if you want to use them outside the Wonderful World of Disney.

Basically, you can bank and borrow one year of each at a time. Forgetting the "Use Year" thing for a second, you bank all of your points from this year into next (say 100 points), you are now in 2015 with 100 plus 2014's points, and you can borrow 2016 into 2015, and Bob is your uncle, is your aunt and you now have 300 points in 2015. That being said, you will have zero points until 2017 rolls around.....savvy?

Every DVC point has the potential to be used in a 3 year window. The "Use Year", the year prior to the "Use Year", and the year after the "Use Year". If you want to use the point in the year prior to the "Use Year", you need to "Borrow" them. To use them the year after the "Use Year", you need to "Bank" them. The trick is that points can only move once. As soon as they are moved, by either "Banking" or "Borrowing", they must be spent in the year they were moved to.

Clear as mud? :D
