you said it best ..but they can also effect your family and be a part of your family memories .. you know the line in COP "we have something new called a Rat Race" well my youngest heard that ..and for about 3 years she was always having pretend "rat races with mickey, minnie, goofy and all. heck she was only 3 but it was so much fun hearing her tell about her "rat races" and who won them. She picked up on just one little part of the whole show .. and she enjoyed that for a couple of years. yep your right Grizzly ..the attractions become your family. I signed it ..it may not do any good a petition didnt save Mr. Toad and it didnt save Horizons .. and it may not save COP ..but its says we care if we took the time to say we protest!

Well what I plan to do when we have enough signatures is invest in printing the petition & signatures and sending it to Disney along w/ a letter. Hopefully that'll get their attention.

You mean just like the ones that were sent to "save" horizons and Toad? yeah..it'll get their attention..it will help speed up the decision to trash it so that they can stop getting all the letters...

that's a bit far-fetched...the company will not go to hell when Carouself of Progress closes...by the way...Walt liked thrill rides...he didn't want to have many b/c his daughters couldn't go on them, but he did like them...one of the reasons he built the Matterhorn...change isn't bad but rather inevitable. You cannot expect any non-E-Ride to stay in a park indefinitely. Also, Disney would never rip this attraction apart--everything will only go someplace else...like the Smithsonian...

DogsRule! I dont think it is so far-fetched. I keep reading over and over on here how all everyone wants WDW to have rides like IOA .. I am not saying I dont like the thrill rides .. I do ..but why cant we keep things like COP. Not everyone likes the same thing but progress doesnt mean taking away everything that isnt a thrill ride. A thrill ride / coast is just that .. you can go anywhere to ride those. But your only going to find things like COP at WDW.

Unbfortunately though we have no say in what happens with the ride. And we can write petitons and letters and everything and it still won't make a difference. The fate of CoP is already sealed and only time can tell what will happen to it.

Disney will most likely stay with what saves them money, if CoP isn't really being hit they will keep it closed. Maybe its all part of their plan too. Get enough people interested in it again that when they start to reopen it, the ride is popular again.

um...no Six Flags has a thrill ride even remotely close to Disney's thrill rides. Carousel of Progress will close because it is expensive to run and had a history of miniscule attendance (I know someone will argue this, but check with any Cast Member...). Each ride is allotted a certain percentage of ticket sales based on the number of Guests it sees. Carousel had been seeing so few guests during the day that the percentage of ticket sales allotted for it was not enough to run it for the entire day. So, disney tried dropping the hours (run it less so it costs less per day to get the same number of people through). This still didn't work, so now it will closed.

I vaguely remember seeing CoP at the '64-'65 Worlds Fair in New York. It was called "Progressland" sponsored by GE ...so besides an emotional attraction to the ride, there is some historical significance to it.

...what puzzles me is that the rumors to close this attraction have floated about for over a year now and I'm sure it's been a discussion in the Disney executive offices for longer than that. So why not just get on with it? Make a date for it's closing, let everyone who wants to see it have an opportunity to visit it and close it for good. I honestly don't understand why all the foot-dragging on this one but for those of us who enjoyed this attraction, it's torture waiting for it to die.

DogsRule is correct about the attendance; there were years we visited the attraction only to find a handful of people interested. This renewed interest in CoP seems to be the result of the rumors of it's closing.

perhaps by dragging this out, disney is trying to get us disney fans in the parks a lot more than we might usually go, thus raising their park attendance numbers while they actually have this attraction close 95% of the time...

I was there @ the end of Feb. and the MK was PACKED. Still, no CoP... I spoke to a CM and she said she thought they should have opened it that day but oh well. Looks like it's becoming Budget Cut World...

I think the reason its taking them so long to "announce" its final arrangments is because they are deciding exactly WHAT to do with it. Im pretty sure they dont want to destroy it..and if they ARE in negotiations with a museum..that could take a while.

I sure hope they keep it open. To me, this ride is what the magic is all about. There always seems to be a lot of people on it when I go.

It is also sort of hidden away where it is. It needs a bit more flash on the outside.

The real hold up here for removing COP might be that they are studying various options for its replacement. Between COP, the Time Keeper, the stage in Tomorrowloand, the skyride building, and the tomorrowland theater, this becomes a very large space available for a new attraction. All of these locations are unused most of the time, removing any of them permanently would create a hole uglier than 20,000 leagues.

The Magic Kingdom is due for a new E-ticket ride or two in the very near future. Either of these loactions would be perfect.

AS for what to do with COP, I think it should be moved to the Smithsonian. It has cultural and historical signifigance. What better place for it?
